Mandalay Burmese Restaurant Opening in Shaw This Fall

After more than three years in the works, Silver Spring Burmese restaurant Mandalay will open a second location at 9th and P streets NW in late October.

After Prince of Petworth posted a photo of the building's progress, Y&H followed up with the family-owned restaurant, which is repeatedly ranked among the best cheap eats in the region.

Aung Myint, son of Mandalay chef Hla Hme, will run the kitchen at the new restaurant. "My mom is very headstrong. We can't tweak or change [the menu] without her say," Myint says. But he'll have a chance to put his own twist on the food at the new location. The menu will be less than half the size of the Silver Spring menu and rotate every week or two to include new dishes plus customer favorites. Myint is also considering a six- or seven-course tasting menu. Expect prices to be slightly higher, given the higher cost of rent in D.C.

The main dining room will seat 70 people, compared to the 120 that can fit at the Silver Spring locale. There will also be an upstairs lounge where diners can retire for post-dinner drinks, as well as a private dining space on the third floor. Myint also hopes to open a patio as well.
