Franklins Celebrates 10 Years of Sandwiches, Suds & Other Stuff
Franklins Restaurant, Brewery and General Store is one of the best kept secrets in local beer. This Sunday, the Hyattsville brewpub is celebrating their tenth anniversary. If you've never been, it's a good time to try the place out. If you have been, you know it's worth the trek into Maryland for one of the joint's gargantuan sandwiches or unique craft beers.
The all-day party will feature brewery tours every two hours from noon to 8 p.m., 20 house-brewed beers including a special anniversary ale, and a free Franklins pint glass with the first beer purchase. The general store, a toy emporium with a kick-ass beer and wine shop in the back, will have free stuff for the kids and wine tastings for the adults, with sparkling wines from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and regional wines from 3 p.m. to close.

Head brewer Mike Roy's 10th Anniversary Ale is brewed with a Pilsner, Munich, biscuit and honey malts and hopped with a combination of earthy German Tettnang hops and piney, citrusy American Cascade hops. This unfiltered 5.3 percent alcohol-by-volume pale ale—not quite American but not quite English or German either—will fit in among the variety of beers featured this weekend.
Roy describes himself as "a versatile 21st century American brewer, believing that the tastes for beer in America are seemingly infinite." With this approach and more than 10 years of brewing experience under his belt, Roy has injected a healthy dose of innovation and eclecticism into the beer program since taking it over in 2010.
