Adam Express Is Back In The Bulgogi Business
Venerable Mount Pleasant carry-out Adam Express (City Paper's pick for "Best Korean in the District," circa 2008) has reopened after abruptly closing for several weeks this past October. Prince of Petworth had the early word. "All of a sudden my wife is sick. So we go to Korea to see doctor," proprietor Bae Hyolyuk had explained in a note posted in the storefront. Y&H dropped by at lunchtime Tuesday (its first day open since learning of the reopening) to check in with the gracious couple. Hyolyuk, in his black cap and apron, was manning the wok, while the missus, Boo Hyang, worked the register. The pair were all smiles and suggested that all is now well.
The eatery on Mt. Pleasant Street NW, which also serves Japanese and American-Chinese dishes, has shortened its days of operation to Tuesday through Saturday and is now closed Sunday and Monday.
Newbies wondering how Hyolyuk's bulgogi compares to the marinated beef served at Shaw's bizarrely multi-tasking Arthur's Treacher's, take note: it's a bit less sweet and a lot less saucy. It's also nearly twice as expensive ($11.95 versus $6.99). But it also comes with a side of spicy kimchi; Treacher's version does not.
