Comments Come True: The Greek Spot’s Vegetarian Gyro

Eating my way through your advice, an ambitious list of vegetarian sandwiches from 24 different restaurants.  More Comments Come True.

Healthy it is not. But that's not what vegetarianism is all about. Not all of the time, anyway. (Hello, cheesy tortillas!). Sometimes you've got to stuff chunks of fake meat into a just-grilled pita and smother it all with a chunky feta sauce. At least that's what you should do at The Greek Spot, located just off the craziness of U Street NW.

The vegetarian gyro shuns actual vegetables for a soy-based, beef-like impostor that resembles strips of fajita steak but tastes generically meaty with an extremely soft texture. Not chewy. Not grainy. Just soft. But, pleasantly so. Still, the real prize here—the feta sauce—cloaks the mealy chunks of tomatoes and allows just enough room for the snap of raw onion, specked with a confetti of parsley.

For $6.50, this meatless wrap keeps you full for not all that much money. But, if you can spare an extra buck and change, the salt-and-peppered fries come out hot and crispy and taste even better dipped into that same feta sauce.

Have you checked out the new Muse Cafe at the Corcoran art gallery? Huge emphasis on vegetarian foods with local ingredients.

Thanks for the tip, Jane. Any dishes you particularly like?

The market sandwich is good but again ingredients rotate pretty quickly. They have 17 vegetarian plates at last count.

I've had this sandwich a few times and I'd get it again. But honestly, I could do without the fake meat. Sometimes I pick it out.

You should check out Sundevich, by the way. They have some of the best veggie sandwiches in town right now. The Cairo (with brined veggies, herbs and nuts) is delish.
