Should H Street Put A Cap On Its Booze Boom?

Has the District's densely liquor-licensed H Street corridor become too densely liquor-licensed?

Local Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6A will debate the issue at a series of public meetings over the next couple of months, beginning next Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Sherwood Recreation Center.

DCist has a rundown on all the various neighborhoods around town that have put caps on the number of licensees in a given area (Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Georgetown, Glover Park) and those that have decided against it (Barracks Row, 17th Street).

It's not a matter to be taken lightly. The restaurant boom has obviously been a huge boon to the developing Atlas District and the recent debacle at Shaw's Tavern clearly illustrates how important liquor licenses can be to keeping eateries in business.

    Oh, there's a good idea, resurrect an area no one would ever go to before, then kill it.

    Brilliant. We should also try to kill the Streetcars that are mostly built too. Oh, we did try that. Way to go DC, take some time to give this some thought, I know it must be a tough decision: Booming nightlife area that eases tensions in overly crowded Adams-Morgan while simultaneously growing the economy in socio-economically diverse Atlas District, OR just kill it. Deliberate on that for a while.

    Hey I know a place that doesn't have an issue with too many liquor licenses - Anacostia. Go check that gem of a neighborhood out. I just moved to H St from that hell hole. Do you know why Anacostia is a hell hole? Because their is NOTHING to do there except get robbed or see whose baby mama drama is going to keep you up all night. It's a joke. I for one will be at these meetings where I will offer a tour of my old neighborhood so those anti-liquorists can see what they'll be in store for. (since apparently they already forget what a dump H st was just a few years back

    Liquor license caps protect pre-existing restaurants from competition. No matter how mediocre the food, limited supply means they can stay afloat, condemning the neighborhood to fewer, unappealing choices.

    Terrible idea to just cap. If they are trying to cut down on nuisance, restrict licenses to only dining establishments.

    What effect does this have on BYOB places? I'm fine with the cap if people are allowed to bring their own. One of the things I miss the most about Chicago was the range of BYOB places around my neighborhood. I'd love to see something like that in DC.
