Free Gifford’s Ice Cream! The Real Thing, Not Some Imposter

On Saturday, May 7, the first 500 customers to arrive at the grand re-opening celebration of Gifford's Ice Cream in Chevy Chase will receive a free vanilla ice cream cone.

That's the real Gifford's ice cream, mind you; not some cheap knock-off.

You'll recall that the Chevy Chase location of the storied ice cream chain had closed nine months ago amid a nasty legal battle between the original ownership group and the Baltimore-based franchisee that took it over. The crux of the dispute: the new guy was secretly hawking supermarket brand ice cream instead of company founder John Nash Gifford's original homemade recipe.

According to a press release, the original owners have now taken back possession of the store and have entered into  a "strategic marketing partnership" with ACKC (Artfully Chocolate/Kingsbury Confections) to manage the Gifford's in Chevy Chase and to offer Gifford's ice cream at ACKC's three other Washington-area locations in Logan Circle, Arlington and Alexandria.

The restored regime further promises to maintain the integrity of the original product:

Since 1938, Gifford's Ice Cream has been using the finest ingredients to serve homemade super-premium ice cream with classic rich, creamy tastes that hark back to earlier times.  John Nash Gifford, the founder, spent years perfecting his recipes to ensure the highest quality and unique flavors, and Gifford's is proud to carry on this tradition for new generations.
