Ink and Oink at Ba Bay: Tattooed Pork, Anyone?

Talk about carving meat. On May 2, Ba Bay on Capitol Hill is hosting an unusual variation on the traditional pig roast. You see, before the pork is cooked, its flesh will get inked. Artistes from Tattoo Paradise are going to have their way with the swine, then hand it over to chef Nick Sharpe for various preparations, including a pork mousse.

Now, before the good folks at PETA go all ballistic, know this: organizer Jesse Tittsworth tells Young & Hungry the pig will not be alive and squealing when the needle is applied.

What's the point of tattooing a dead pig? Charity, of course. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Red Cross Japan.

Also, the purveyor of pork for the event is none other than Bev Eggleston of EcoFriendly Foods, among the most ethical butchers in the business. As Eggleston told me in a 2008 interview, “When you do the right thing with animals, they taste fucking great.”

As the online epicenter for food, tattoos and oddities, is proud to announce PIGment – one of the weirdest culinary events we could dream up. Team members for this gastronomic adventure include Ba Bay, a new modern Vietnamese restaurant in Capitol Hill, EcoFriendly Foods, a celebrated agricultural advocate and farm, and of course our usual partners in crime at Tattoo Paradise.

The game plan: Bev Eggelston[sic], founder of EcoFriendly Foods, will donate a local pig. Artists from Tattoo Paradise will then tattoo Wilbur. No, you will not die or even poison yourself by eating tattooed pork, as participating artists are using all-natural cuttlefish ink (another EcoFriendly Foods contribution). Once the pig is inked up, chef Nick Sharpe from Ba Bay will prepare them in modern Vietnamese fashion: one course features pork mousse and egg yolk dumplings in broth with smoked hock and celery hearts. The tournament winner is you!

Reservations are required as seating is limited.
5 course dinner is $65.
Proceeds to benefit Red Cross Japan.
There are two seatings: 5pm and 8:30pm

Monday, May 2 is when we tattoo and roast the WHOLE pig at Ba Bay, 633 Pennsylvaia Ave SE.

    Do yourself a favor and Google Bev Eggelston, learn what he is about, THEN come back and lets have an informed discussion instead of a typical knee-jerk reaction.

    I don't think it unethical. It just seems tacky (although the pig tasted great I'm sure). I'm not vegan, nor vegetarian. I eat meat and enjoy it. I like tattoos. Even though the animal may have been raised and killed humanely, what was the point of the tats? At the very least one can only hope the subject matter of the tattoos carved on the pig's body had meaning or relevance with regards to the events in Japan. Maybe next time Tittsworth can get tats on his own body in honor of the Japan devastation. Now that would be worthy of a generous donation.

    NM: the point of the tats is for the artists to demonstrate their talent. Think of the swine skin as a canvas.
