This Week: Brewer’s Dinner at District Chophouse, Summer Harvest Party at U.S. Botanical Gardens & Bacon and Beer Fest at Heavy Seas

It's a short week, but that's all the more reason to go out and enjoy some organized beer fun. Brief descriptions below, but for details on any event click on it in our D.C. Beer Events Calendar above.

Two events from the holiday are likely to have leftovers this week. On Monday ChurchKey tapped four rare drafts from Founders. These gems from the Grand Rapids, Michigan brewery include Nemesis 2010, a black barleywine, Black Biscuit, a barleywine aged in bourbon barrels with maple syrup, Breakfast Stout, an Imperial Stout with chocolate and coffee, and Canadian Breakfast Stout, the Breakfast Stout aged in bourbon barrels lined with maple syrup. Beers like these go quickly but ChurchKey tapped them (1) without much warning and (2) over a holiday weekend, so there just might be a few pints left.

Similarly, Room 11 tapped Allagash Fluxus 2010 on their guest line Monday evening. This year's Tribute Series beer is a 10.3% ABV Belgian-style Imperial Stout and should be available at the Columbia Heights bar all week.

Tuesday is the usual trivia night at Biergarten Haus, but this week they are offering 15% off the entire check for participating teams and encouraging both winners and losers to land at Sticky Rice for karaoke afterwards. On Wednesday District Chophouse and Brewery is holding a brewer's dinner featuring eight hand-crafted Chophouse beers paired with small plates. It is our guess that at least one version of their D.C. Beer Week commemorative aleAlt Together Now will be on the line-up.

Friday evening the U.S. Botanical Garden is throwing a Summer Harvest Party to celebrate the role of plants in everyday life. Festivities include culinary demonstrations by guest chefs and a buffet from leading DC area restaurants and ChurchKey Beer Director Greg Engert will share a number of cask ales that prominently feature locally-grown hops as well as speak about the hop plant and its place in brewing. The event will also feature cocktails made with fresh herbs from the garden. Before you get too excited, you should know that tickets cost $80 for USBG members, $90 for non-members, and must be bought in advance.

This Saturday is the annual Pyrates, Pigs & Pints Bacon & Beer Fest at Heavy Seas Brewery in Baltimore, where you can sample over ten kinds of bacon from around the world and dishes made with bacon from area restaurants. There will be 12 Heavy Seas taps plus firkins, live music, and a contest for the best dressed pirate. What better way can you think of to get yourself prepped for the upcoming Talk Like a Pirate Day? Sadly, this year's event is sold out, but you should mark your calendars for this time next year.
