Cereal Bowl Set to Open March 27

I noticed the door was open at The Cereal Bowl so I wheeled into an illegal parking spot on Connecticut Avenue NW, near the Uptown, and decided to pop in. How long could it take to put together a bowl of cereal? Long enough to get a ticket?

I wanted to know.

Looks like I'll have to wait until next week. The most criticized restaurant that no one has actually tried yet will open to the public on Saturday, March 27, the friendly man behind the counter said. The Cereal Bowl had just passed its health inspection today, he added, and plans to have a soft opening next week to test drive its cereal combos, specialty oatmeal bowls, parfaits, smoothies, and Ugly Mug coffee.

Believe it or not, the Cereal Bowl is not the only business to try to cash in on Frosted Flakes and Froot Loops.  There's also Cereality and possibly a company called Cereal Central, although I can't find a Web site on the latter.

Regardless, the point is, D.C. will soon become part of the Cereal comedy, in which Washingtonians will pay good money to have someone put together a bowl of Something Sweet (Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Vanilla Wafers, and Rainbow Sprinkles), Give Me S'More (Golden Grahams, Cocoa Puffs, Marshmallow Graham Bites, and chocolate chips), and other specialty bowls of commercial cereal.

Check out some of the commentary from the foodie community:

  • Wow. Just wow. I looked at their "menu". I don't think you could make that shit up if you tried.
  • Infantile adults
  • It's a pretty clever scheme by a bunch of college kids, but it does seem like an excuse to charge you a lot of money for something you can do for a buck at home.

Why do I suspect this is going to be a big hit? At least for awhile.

I think this place will be great. This area needs a great coffee shop place with unique food options. The menu is alot more diverse then i first thought of. Healthy smoothies sound like good fit for area. From pics I love the store design. I mean can't you make a better pastry at home then dunkin doughnuts? I like what these guys are doing and think that once people see it they will get it

I'm in love. This place is gonna be sick.

Screw food critics. I know what I want.

First off, you cannot do this at home for a buck. For a small amount of money each day, you get an enormous variety of cereals, in a multitude of combinations. To maintain that variety in your cabinet would be prohibitively expensive. This is just like the dining hall at college, where you can mix and match, have a bowl of one kind today and then not again for a week and it's still as fresh as if you just opened it. The only question really is going to be are there enough people eating that much cereal to meet the revenue requirements of prime retail space in Cleveland Park? We shall see.

I think its important people get past the name and look at how its not just a bowl of cereal. They seem to have creative smoothies with oats, coffee looks gourmet which area needs and they have real fresh parfaits not the prepackeged kinds everyone else sells.

Dunkin Doughnuts is alot more then just doughnuts. I'm sure Cereal Bowl is more the just cereal 24/7

I think they had this restaurant in the Arizona State cafeteria. I liked it!

We had one back in Miami. It flopped after 2 years. Not to wish bad upon the owners of this franchise, but I suspect the same for this store.

I'm just wondering what this place has that Starbucks didn't.

Is there anyway I could get a copy of this wordpress theme? I've been looking on and cant really find anything I like but this would be perfect for me. Thanks in advance!
