The Hostess with the Mostest: What’s Your Fave Commercial Snack Cake?
The other day while I was shopping at CVS, I stopped almost dead in my tracks at the sight of the snack rack, where all manner of commercial cakes stared forlornly back at me, doomed souls from another era. Hostess Cupcakes, Suzy Q's, Ding Dongs, Donettes, Sno Balls, Twinkies, Zingers, and my personal junk-food favorite, Ho Hos, which are, in a way, the Georgetown Cupcakes of my youth.
I don't care how hard you judge me about this, I still love Ho Hos, those little logs whose dry chocolate coating cracks unmercifully when you bite into them. Those little logs in which a moist cake reveals this cinematic swirl of creamy goodness in the middle.
I don't want to see how Ho Hos are made. I don't care how they're made. I don't even have any desire to fancy them up with ridiculous "kabobs" and "dessert bites" recipes. I just want to, on rare occasion, stuff 'em straight down my gullet.
What about you? What's your favorite commercial snack cake? E-mail me and let me know.

5:23 pm
Go Butterscotch Krimpet or GTFO.
5:35 pm
I've always been fascinated by the Ding Dong / Ho Ho connection, so similar, yet so different. Love them both...
6:12 pm
there have been taste tests proving that women prefer ho-hos and men prefer dingdongs. or maybe it's the other way around.
7:00 pm
These all sound like Las Vegas brothels.
8:42 am
Devil Dogs from Drake's Cakes! Damn. Now I want one.
9:10 am
The orange Hostess cupcakes. I thought they were vanilla until I was about 12, and loved them even more once I realized they were orange.
9:41 am
Little Debbie Nutty Bars!
10:44 am
i always thought it was sad that people outside of the philadelphia area had to eat stuff that wasn't made by tastykake.
10:55 am
I totally agree, JPK.
Anything Tastykake makes is my preference, but it's a tie between their chocolate and peanut butter kandy kakes as my favorite.
1:30 pm
I miss them but I live better knowing I'm not consuming tranfats.
1:40 pm
Oatmeal cream pies aside, Maniac Magee had it right: Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets.
5:55 pm
Gansitos!!!
No one said a thing about American snack cakes. My childhood would not have been the same without them!

Yodels (from Drakes) -- individually foil wrapped, as in my youth. Something was lost when they ditched the foil for plastic and cardboard.
Or Suzy Qs, frozen.
