Y&H to Live Blog from the Atlantic Food Summit

Y&H doesn't usually have his first cup of coffee by 8 a.m., but today, I'll be awake, caffeinated, and confabbing away at the Newseum, where The Atlantic is hosting its Food Summit, which starts at the ungodly time of 8:20 a.m. I will attempt to live blog the event, if the coffee keeps flowing and the wifi stays connected.

Hey, can't these folks fix the world's food problems later in the morning?

Even if the caffeine doesn't awaken my brain by 8, the Summit's agenda should. The keynote speaker is Dr. Margaret Hamburg, commissioner of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, only the second woman nominated for the post. Other speakers include former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle, Hafez Ghanem, the assistant director-general of Economic and Social Development with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, and Josh Viertel, president of Slow Food USA, who will lead a panel on "Feeding the World."

The panel discussion on "The Next Era of Food Safety" will feature Erik Olson (director of Food and Consumer Product Safety with the Pew Charitable Trusts), Stephen Sundlof (director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition with the FDA), Elizabeth Westring (vice president of  Quality and Regulatory Operations with General Mills), and Alan Wilson (chairman, president, and CEO with McCormick & Company).

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, special advisor on health policy, Office of Management and Budget, and chair of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health will deliver post-lunch remarks. The day's final panel discussion on "The Way We Eat" will feature Brian Wansink (the John Dyson professor of consumer behavior and director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University), Dr. Walter Willett (professor of epidemiology and nutrition and chairman of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard University), and Catherine E. Woteki (global director of Scientific Affairs with Mars).

The event is sold out. So don't even think about going.
