SF Weekly Has a New Twist on the 5-Second Rule


The old theory held that you had a five-second grace period before bacteria got their grubby little mitts on the food you dropped on the floor.

The theory, of course, has had its detractors and outright disbelievers, though one pair of student researchers dared to suggest it should be expanded to 30 seconds.

Until earlier this week, I always thought that Rob McKittrick's Waiting offered the funniest and most accurate depiction of the 5-second rule in real life. (Skip to the 40-second mark on the clip above.) Then came SF Weekly's handy and hilarious You Dropped Food on the Floor/Do You Eat It? chart:
