Young and Hungry

At Long Last (and Long Gone), Life & Limb

The much-anticipated launch of Life & Limb, Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head's collaboration beer, has pretty much come and gone. The Reef had a launch party, Pizzeria Paradiso had a beer brunch, and all the other DC stores and bars that had some seem to be all out.

DCBeer has pictures from The Reef's launch party and updates about where bottles and kegs have been tapped and emptied, as well as info on the last few places that have a stash left. Far as we can tell, the best bet to find some Life & Limb on draft is at ChurchKey and Scion, whenver they each decide to tap their remaining kegs.

We got to try Life & Limb this Sunday at the Dupont Circle Pizzeria Paradiso.  This "style-defying" beer ended up looking and feeling a lot like an Imperial Stout. It was very dark brown to black in color, tasted sweet with a nice alcohol presence, had a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, and became roastier and boozier as it warmed.

As nice as it was to finally try the hyped-up Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head collaboration, it was a 2007 Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA that made the day. This nicely mellowed version of DFH's monster IPA was a citrusy dream. It and Sierra Nevada's Estate Ale paired really well with Paradiso's egg, sausage, roasted potato, spinach, and bleu cheese brunch pizza.  (As you may have guessed, our leftovers were the best cold pizza breakfast ever.) We're heading back over tonight to see if they have anything from the beer brunch menu left. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the shout out! I'm the bar manager at Scion Restaurant and yes, we do have 1 keg of the Life and Limb. We haven't finalized the date for when we are tapping the keg, but it will be in the first week or so of January. We've only been open a few months, so you might not know about us. But come check us out if you are in the Dupont area. Please e-mail me at if you have any questions or would like any updates on the Life and Limb. Thanks!
