Attn. Hop Heads: ‘Beer Wars’ Documentary Showing Tonight Only
The filmmaker behind Beer Wars, a documentary that probes the great divide between craft brewers and the multi-national beer behemoths, has borrowed a page from the small guys and is creating buzz for her debut film by limiting its availability — a one-day-only screening tonight at theaters across the nation. The marketing for the flick seems mostly grass-roots, too; Y&H only heard about the screening through the DC-Beer listserv.
Director Anat Baron, a former Hollywood producer and general manager for Mike's Hard Lemonade, has not only put together this insider doc but has also engineered an entire nationwide event around it. The theaters showing the film will also plug into a live simulcast discussion featuring subjects from the documentary, including Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione and New Century Brewing founder Rhonda Kallman. The event starts at 8 p.m. today at various theaters around the area. Check this list for the one nearest you.
The whole thing, of course, sounds like a Beer Nerd Fest of the highest order, but as Baron points out on the Beer Wars Web site:
Also remember that none of them have seen the film so their reactions will be raw. And since I'll be on the panel with them, let's hope no shoes are hurled at me or at each other. That's the cool thing about a LIVE show. Anything can happen.
Nothing could happen, too. Plus, you're gonna have to sneak some brews into the moviehouse if you really want to get into the spirit of Beer Wars.
