Gary,

I forgot all about those self-heating cans! They were absolutely cool, though I never, ever wanted to eat/drink out of one. I imagined the chemicals mixing, the clear liquid with the red, much like they do in Die Hard III, with disastrous results for school children and stray animals.

I haven't had any brushes with new food technology lately, but I did once try some Dinty Moore stew that came with its own heat source. You had to break a seal of some sort which caused an envelope of water to boil, which heated the stew. It was probably a space-age polymer of some kind, mixed with what I could only assume was toxic anhydrous ammonia that was safely contained inside the cardboard box.

It didn't kill me.
