Malia and Sasha Obama Will Eat Well at Sidwell Friends

Young & Hungry's friends over at the Haphazard Gourmet Girls blog have launched a new project, Obama Foodorama, which HGG Editor in Beef Eddie Gehman Kohan describes as "an unlikely mash-up of idiotic Obama foodie gossip and a serious look at Ag policy, and all the raving problems Obama is facing in farming, food safety, ethanol, etc. "

Yesterday, ObFo posted an item about the Obama girls going to Sidwell Friends, which promotes not only local and sustainable eating but has also graduated a wealth of food geeks. Writes Obama Foodorama:

The school has a number of famous Alums, including Nancy Reagan, Gore Vidal, Charles Lindbergh...and also a bunch of alums who've published foodie books; among these are Trevor Corson '87 [Young & Hungry, "Boss Sauce, 8/20/08], bestselling author of The Story of Sushi and The Secret Life of Lobsters; Alison Clare Steingold '98, author of Small Bites, Big Nights; Lisa Yockelson '72, author of Baking for Gift-Giving; Cobblers, Crisps, and Deep-Dish Pies; The Efficient Epicure and 8 other cookery books; Ann Clark Espuelas '84, author of The Real Food Revival: Aisle by Aisle, Morsel by Morsel; Catherine O'Neill Grace '62, author of 1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving and I Want to be a Chef; and Louise Hawes '61, author of Tales from the Cafeteria #1: Spaghetti and Spooks; Tales from the Cafeteria #2: Things That Go Bump in Your Soup.

The post got me to looking at the Sidwell Friends' online menus, which look like Nora Pouillon put them together. I mean, look at some of these dishes: "Fennel & Arugula w/ Parmesan," " Organic Pear & Gorgonzola Salad," " All Natural Curried Chicken Salad," and "Pumpkin Bread." Hell, I remember when french fries were considered exotic on junior high cafeteria menus.

But I must say, I think I spot a mini-trend among gourmets and budding gourmets in the city: The Sidwell middle school/upper school menu will feature Brunswick stew on Thursday, Dec. 4.
