Hess V. Hesse: The Battle of the Election Night Hookup Fluff Jobs

Yesterday, the Washington Post published a story by Monica Hesse on election night hookups as pursued through Craigslist personals ads. But soft! Was it not mere hours before yesterday that I reported on election night hookups as pursued through Craigslist personal ads?

I smell blog item!

How I Spent Election Night

Riding through the rain. Scouting barber shops. Hugging strangers. Beating drums. Watching revelers climb to the highest elevation in sight—bus stops, stop lights, trees. Yelling back at honking cars. Chanting “U.S.A.” for the first time (unironically). Storming Marvin when Barack came on the big screen. Cheering for our next first lady—and, inexplicably, even louder for our next first puppy. Cheering for the District of Columbia. Putting down my notepad. Watching history. It was a wonderful night.

Prop 8: And The Lawsuits Begin

Ballots are still being counted for Prop 8, the California measure that would rescind marriage rights from the state’s gay couples. But according to New England GLBT paper Bay Windows, the legal opposition to Prop 8 has already begun. Robin Tyler and Diane Olson, the lesbian couple that won marriage rights in a previous California Supreme Court decision, have filed another suit.

Attorney Gloria Allred and her clients, a lesbian couple, who won right to marry in the California Supreme Court will hold a news conference to announce a new lawsuit against Prop. 8. . . . Ms. Allred and her law firm represented the couple in their victory before the California Supreme Court. Her clients became the first to marry in Los Angeles County in June.

Ms. Allred will file the new lawsuit today with the California Supreme Court on behalf of the couple. The new lawsuit will contain a new and controversial legal argument as to why Prop. 8 is unconstitutional. Copies of the lawsuit will be provided to the press at the news conference.

Feminists On the Aftermath of the Election

There’s a lot to talk about.

* Feministing has a comprehensive round-up of ballot measures of interest to both women and gays. Overall, the results are “pro-choice, anti-gay,” with three anti-choice measures failing across America. (Feministing also throws in the anti-immigrant and anti-equal opportunity initiatives for good measure). The most ridiculous, Colorado’s Amendment 48, was shut down by 73% of voters who spoke out “against granting fertilized eggs full rights.” Whew, because you never know when you’re gonna get one of those, am I right ladies?

Anti-Gay Election Roundup

Last night, president-elect Barack Obama included gay Americans in his message of unity between all citizens, “rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight.” But Obama and VP-elect Joe Biden don’t support gay marriage—and success of several anti-gay ballot initiatives around the country mirror that distinction.

I Voted.

You should too. I may look serious, but really I’m just coming down from a serious endorphin rush from voting for the first time in the District. Check out more voter and polling place photos at washingtoncitypaper.com. —Amanda

HIV/AIDS in D.C. Video Corner

Fight HIV in D.C. compiled this video of D.C. Council candidates Kwame Brown, Michael Brown, Mark Long, Patrick Mara, Carol Schwartz, and David Schwartzman explaining their positions on how to fight the District’s HIV/AIDS epidemic. Well, except for Green candidate Schwartzman, who didn’t get the memo and so just rambles about global warming and taxes on millionaires and whatever else is on his mind. He’s up second.
