The HIV Blame Game: The Last Word!

Finally, the debate is over, and we may finally know who is truly to blame for HIV!

As promised, blogger Black Informant has posted a response to my response to his response to my response to his call for a debate based on my response to a blog post he wrote about the District’s new HIV numbers, thus concluding our virtual tête-à-tête. Let me begin by saying that it’s been a blast, and I hope that Black Informant has a great summer and never changes.

Since Black Informant’s post was to be the final one in our debate, which spanned fisting, rimming, irresponsible hedonism, and the importance of a good education, I won’t respond to the points he’s made here. If anyone would like to weigh in in the comments—by all means. Below, I’ve collected the greatest hits of Black Informant’s closing statement.

The HIV Blame Game: The Real Problem Is Money

Black Informant responds; I respond to his response; soon, he will respond once more; then, it will be over.

Welcome back to the HIV Blame Game, wherein blogger Black Informant and I debate the root causes of the HIV epidemic in Washington, D.C. Yesterday, I wrote a post arguing why the gay and lesbian community shouldn’t be a scapegoat for D.C.’s HIV problem, that HIV/AIDS affects us all, and that we need to create strong educational initiatives to help stop the epidemic.

Black Informant responded—read his post here. The crux of his argument is that HIV/AIDS is spread by people, both gay and straight, “who know how to avoid STDs, yet insist on doing the total opposite,” and public initiatives to further educate the public on the risks of HIV will force “society at large to foot the bill for their bad choices”:

The HIV Blame Game: Let the Debate Begin

Blogger Black Informant, with whom I disagree.

Yesterday, I wrote a post calling out Black Informant, a blogger who called out homosexuals for the striking new HIV/AIDS numbers in the District. The blogger then proceeded to call me out, in a post titled “Calling Amanda Hess of the Washington City Paper.” Black Informant wanted to debate. Well, here we go!

HIV In D.C.: Let the Gay Blaming Begin

This didn’t take too long: Blogger Black Informant reacts to our District’s stunning new HIV numbers by blaming homosexuality for the spread of the disease.

After today’s news, you might think that a D.C. woman’s greatest fear about her sexual partner would be the possibility that he’s infected with HIV/AIDS. According to Black Informant, a woman’s greatest fear is actually that her partner is gay—and therefore solely responsible for the spread of HIV/AIDS in the District of Columbia:

What is the number 1 complaint I hear from sistahs out in places like D.C., Atlanta, etc. regarding the men? I’ll let you guess that one. I don’t hear the same complaint coming from folks out in North Dakota. . . . To put it bluntly, here is a comment I hear quite frequently from women who live in these areas: “…and when you do find a ‘good’ man, you find out later that he’s gay.”
