One big female-dominated subculture - slash fanfiction (maybe straight fanfic too?). Apparently they also founded, or in some important way brought about, the first Star Trek conventions. Sorry I'm not sure of the details, my particular subcultures are on the anime/manga/gaming side.

brit, do you mean the people at the shows are 50/50 men and women, or the musicians playing are 50/50? Jessica Hopper's essay on emo makes a really good point about how women are really interested in being a part of these scenes (and are often encouraged to be fans), but they're still not well-represented in the bands, and their experiences aren't well-represented in the music, either.

I'll second Liz on this one. I definitely don't feel like the shows that I go to are really dominated by guys, though it's not quite 50/50.

My personal experience in this scene has always been really comfortable and not at all full of Kurt Cobain Haircut Dudes. Maybe I'm just oddly lucky, but most of the indie/hipster-type dudes I know are actually pretty feministy (even outright saying to people "I'm a feminist"). I'm definitely counting my blessings for them.

Also, I thought this was a pretty interesting take on "hipster style" as this sort of third gender territory since it really has become very androgynous. I actually just saw a guy shopping unintentionally in the girl section of a store. Though it didn't phase him, cause, who cares really? Skinny jeans are skinny jeans. http://www.autostraddle.com/evolution-of-the-lesbian-hipster-33279/

There's a sort of crafty/knitty subculture thing. Hipster men do it, but ladies dominate.

I guess you could make the argument that fashion is more female-oriented, but then again I don't know about that as much, since most of the designers I know off the top of my head are gay men, and women are more often than not the models or seamstresses or consumers.

But I only have a very limited knowledge of the fashion world (a lot of my female friends are into it, so I guess it's mostly just a proximity thing), so if I'm totally talking out my ass right now someone please correct me.

I actually saw J-Lew in Ohio last year and the crowd was very mixed - both in terms of gender and, what surprised me more, age. A lot more middle-agers than I had expected.

In my experience, the indie rock scene is more balanced in terms of gender. Though not 50/50 yet, there are tons of revered and known indie rock gals creating music out there, and the indie kids I know listen to music by men and women pretty equally. Maybe it's because a lot of indie rock has an emphasis on strong and unique vocals, which leads to the desire for both male and female voices.

I'm wracking my brain and I actually can't think of one. My main experience with subcultures have been music and nerdy ones and they really are phallocentric. I can't even relate to the cultures surrounding some of the things I'm interested in. It's actually really uncomfortable.

The fact that there was a high percentage of duditude at the Jenny Lewis concert is very interesting. Do you think the male focus in music makes a lot of concerts seem unappealing to women, or that the lack of a serious attitude towards female musicians is internalized?

Good point, Em. Anybody got any nominees for female-dominated subcultures?

(Also, I saw Jenny Lewis in London a few years ago, and the attendees were like 75 percent dude).

It'd probably easier to list subcultures in which misogyny does not rule, honestly.

The singer from Rilo Kiley is Jenny Lewis, by the way. Her solo album "Acid Tongue" is quite nice.
