Maryland Employer Seeks Office Assistant Who Is “Confident With Her Sexuality”

We're in the middle of the worst recession in our lifetimes. The state of Maryland is hanging at a 7.2 percent unemployment rate. And one Maryland employer has found a silver lining in the desperation of his countrymen: The potential for hiring a total babe.

Last week, an area job seeker alerted me to this Craigslist ad for an office assistant job at a Rockville, Md. automotive repair company. Necessary qualifications: Sexy "gal" who knows how to "take direction." Unessential: Actual knowledge of cars.

Here's the ad (it's since been flagged for removal):

I am seeking an attractive self motivated, mature, detail oriented female with good computer and telephone skills to help me run my business. This is a full time position with full company benefits. Knowledge of the Automotive Repair business is a plus, but not essential to performing the requirements of this position, however a good sense of humor is. I need a gal that is confident with her sexuality and does not mind working around a bunch of guys. This is a very fast paced business so I need a gal that can think fast on her feet take a proper message and take direction and do what is needed of her. This job is not for everyone, I need a gal that can interact well with the general public and handle a large volume of incomming calls on a day to day basis. A good clear voice and good communication skills are essential to this position. Reply with resume and photo if available to this post, I like to have a face to go with a name. If you think you can keep up with me and our work environment then I want to hear from you.

Seeing as this job ad alone blatantly defies Montgomery County human rights law, which specifies (and I'm paraphrasing here) that you cannot exclusively hire hot chicks on the basis of their glamor shots. This employer better hope his new hire isn't too confident in her sexuality. She may just end up suing his ass.

    Um...unless he's a porn producer or hiring for an escort service, this sort of ad is completely inappropriate.

    What surprises me most about this ad is how honest he is about his intentions. I'm glad to know his ad was removed, but I believe he isn't alone in his desire for an "attractive" employee. A lot of companies hire based on appearance, even though it's clearly illegal.

    My first job was a sales associate for a chain clothing store that's nationally popular, so I won't name it. At the end of my interview I was hired on the spot. The assistant manager (who conducted the interview) listed off the reasons why he hired me immediately, and "super cute" was included. A couple weeks later when I was doing inventory, another assistant manager and the general manager were reviewing two applications of other young women. The general manager pointed at one app and said, "But she's cuter." One week later I was working with that girl, and she happened to be a great sales associate. But that clearly wasn't the real (or only) reason either of us were hired.

    @ CTD - because their are laws against this kind of shit (although many restaurants seem to have an unofficial rule about hiring only hot girls as servers - they just don't come out and say it)

    Yeah, in college I also worked in retail. We had a group interview with 5 girls--3 thin white women, 1 WOC, and 1 fat woman. As I'm sure you can guess, of the 5 of us, the fat woman wasn't hired and the WOC was hired to work in the back room. The 3 thin white women were hired for the sales floor. And I was there in the interview, I heard everyone's answers...I can guarantee those placements had NOTHING to do with our qualifications.
    I suspect this is frighteningly common.

    And that ad? Gross.

    WILL SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THIS AD BLATENTLY VIOLATES HUMAN RIGHTS OR ANY OTHER KIND OF LAW REGARDING HIRING PRACTICES?

    IF ANY THING HE IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER. THE FEMALE APPLICANT IS ACTUALLY GIVEN PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT IN THE HIRING PROCESS.

    Uh, noodlez...it's illegal to preferentially hire one gender over another when there's no legitimate need. Furthermore, stipulating that sexual harassment is a condition of employment is a pretty obvious violation of human rights. No one should have to be treated like a perforated piece of meat in order to be able to earn a paycheck.

    Sex Discrimination Harassment

    I KNOW IM NOT THE SHARPEST TACK IN THE BOX BUT FROM READING THIS IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MEN SHOULD BE UPSET AT AD AND WOULD HAVE A CASE BECAUSE HE IS DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THEM.

    ALSO WHERE IS THE SEXUAL HARRASSMENT? HE STATES ACCORDING TO AD "I need a gal that is confident with her sexuality and does not mind working around a bunch of guys." I KNOW PLENTY OF WOMEN WHO ARE MORE COMFORTABLE AROUND MEN THAN WOMEN. THEY DONT SUBCRIBE TO THE "WOMEN" TRAIN OF THOUGHT BY GOSSIPING, HATIN ON OTHER WOMEN AND BEING ALL BITCHY AMONG OTHER THINGS. THEY JUST LIKE HANGIN OUT WITH THE FELLAS.
