okay thats stupid! Just because she got drunj doesnt mean a thing, at all! She got drunk for a purpose, perhaps she was in the mood and appaently got drunk; And who doesnt take advantage of a beautiful young lady, when she is drunk? Everyone is capable of that! So why say that she's an idiot and that she shouldnt have been drinking! Its never the victims fault, for why things happen to them! Never!

Yes, being drunk makes it harder to fight off a rapist. But forgetting to wear your glasses would make it harder to fight off a murderer. If I was murdered on a day I wasn't wearing my glasses would people blame me for the murder? No. Because it isn't about anything but keeping women "pure" and, well, in their place. And if a straight guy got drunk and then was raped by other guys nobody would say "Well, he shouldn't have gotten drunk." because we don't treat rape of men as some unavoidable natural disaster like we do with women.

if so many people were present and did nothing, maybe she gave her consent. in this world, 'consent' gives everyone the right to do anything. if alcohol and intersex parties and dating outside marriage were illegal, none of these things would happened.

Seriously Michael. I'm with the above commenter on this one. If someone is in a store alone and they know they're absolutely not being observed, I'd expect them to have a hard time resisting the urge to steal something.

If someone is left alone with an intoxicated 15 year old girl, I don't think it takes rose-colored glasses to expect that they wouldn't rape her.

The fact that many people, especially many men, don't seem to understand what a horrible crime rape is, that seems like a big part of the problem. If you're never really forced to face the reality of rape happening to you, if you never try to empathize with the victims, it's much easier to say "Oh, well, she was asking for it." It's much easier to commit the act yourself, because you've minimized its horror in your mind.

The above comment is totally false about Islam. If people rape in the name of Islam, Islam never accepts them as muslims. If the girl would have been a muslim, she might not have got into this trouble because ISLAM PROHIBITS ALCOHOL.. Islam gives total protection to women if they follow the guidelines is Quran. Pls do not spread unauthentic sayings from people without reading the scriptures.. This affects the personal feelings and the unity gets spoiled..

I hate that those kids saw this going on and did nothing. I hate that women are blamed because of the clothes they are wearing ( for example if a woman was wearing a tight skirt and showing all her boobs its fine to rape her because she is asking for it )I hate that women are being taken advantage of because of what they were wearing, what they were doing, if they were alone, etc and i just read an article that said prisoners in islam are allowed to be raped.HEaring stuff like this makes me distrust men even more and more. WHat has this world come to?

This is where law and order and moralizing all fall down in the face of reality. We have a vile misogynistic culture where teenage boys are taught that it is okay to treat people like this. Where adults allow some teenagers to terrorize other teenagers into keeping quiet because they wouldn't want that to happen to them. Remember what it was like to be bullied anyone? Anyone?

I hate to advocate anything like this but I think the only thing that would fix people's attitudes about rape is to be forced to watch self-confessed rapists to get publicly tortured and murdered, in order to create an effective social sanction against the wrong sorts of behavior, and do it in a permanent way that makes men understand what happens to a filthy rapist scum. If I was that girl's father I would hunt one of the animals down and do absolutely horrible things to him. There is no real justice in this society so you must make your own justice.

Rape is about power. Ultimately you need to rob the powerful of their power and keep yourself from thinking and acting like an abuse victim. Everyone one of us has a right, to survival, self-defense and REVENGE!

Most people have too much faith in human nature to do the right thing and be civilized about it. A group of older males and a 15 year old girl drinking, May as well go to the zoo and throw some steaks to the lions.

It has always been this way, and will continute to be.
So if you live in your ivory tower and believe in the innate goodness of people, you had better wake up , before you are the victiml

All these men speaking about her deserving it or that she should be prosecuted, etc... as previously stated, if the shoe were on the other foot and this was your 15 year old daughter, sister, cousin, niece, etc. you wouldn't be so quick to be so heartless. It actually makes me sick to see how people react to these types of situations, but I'm not surprised. People have no morals these days and then lucky for them, there are people out there who support their actions and slap the old "boys will be boys" and shrug it off. Sick, but that's the world we live in. No means no, and raping a drunk girl = NO. Everyone is so quick to say she made a bad choice but the boys weren't wrong for that they did to her, this was all HER fault? Pathetic really.

Yes woman let's keep telling the men in our society that it is permissible to rape us, as long as we are drunk or intoxicated in some form or another. It's alright fellas, have at it! She made a poor choice; so it's your lucky day. Why don't you all beat her up while your at it. Then all you children can take pictures and put it on FB or MySpace. Sorry sweetie your bad for being young and naive. Infuriating. Disheartening!

Wait, wait. A 15 YEAR OLD is gang raped and you're talking about insuring that she is prosecuted for underage drinking? WOW. Oh wait, not all the underage drinking going on at that dance but HER underage drinking specifically.

Incredible.

ok, rape aside, is the girl being prosecuted for underage drinking? there is no such thing as something being more illegal than another. i'm not saying she deserves to be raped for drinking. she deserves to be punished by the law for breaking the law. she should not be let off the hook because of the rape because she was drinking BEFORE the rape occurred. her choice to break the law had nothing to do with the rape and she should get no sympathy for it. Unless she has powers of premonition and was getting drunk to lessen the trauma of being gang raped later. being a victim of one crime does not excuse the victim's own wrongs.

after writing this i just realized that if the DA does not decide to press charges for underage drinking because of the rape, it will probably be because they think she has gone thru enough trauma and there is no need to exacerbate the situation. said another way, isnt the rape punishment enough? if they dont press charges, they are indirectly saying that the rape was punishment (albiet cruel and unusual), implying that the girl deserved it.

thats what wrong with the world now.Theres no more respect or passion. For adults and kids to post these kinds of comments it lets me know that this world is becoming more and more animalistic.the main problem is what were seeing now.
I DEMAND FROM OUR GOVERNMENT TO STUDY AND CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITIES OF BANNING THE LARGE AMMOUNT OF VIOLENT TV SHOWS AS WELL AS GAMES THAT KIDS PLAY. OBAMA, IF YOU REALLY CARE DO SOMETHING AND RETURN THE POWER TO SCHOOLS, PARENTS, AND STATE FOR PUNISHMENT ON UNRULY CHILDREN.
WE THE ADULTS SHOULD HAVE STRONG PENALTIES FOR NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN WITH WITH VALUES.
NOT JUST GIRLS GET RAPED, A LOT OF BOYS AND ADULTS GET RAPED BY TEENAGERS!!

dear Jane, when you are around a lot of teens and you can see wthat the current generations of girs are doing. You are going to be chock how their attitude and trashy behaviour outside the house is
unbelievable. Girls sitting on kids lap, passing their bubs to the boys and using some type of clohts that boys mind may get worse until that's it!. Many girls lost their values because so many young mothers don't even take care of themselves and their daughter are learning from tv what to do with their body. Nobody deserve to be raped and our government is tolerating to much from underage people that they can get away with to much without been punish. ALL WHAT IS HAPPENING IS A FAILURE FROM OUR OWN GOVERNMENT AND OR POLITICIANS. It is a consecuence of our easy going laws!!!

Rape is a crime, but girls are getting wild and boys will be boys no matter what. I know by fact that is part of the deal to be raped by all the gang member before you can get in!. Girls are playing strong games and now someone got hurt very bad and the news are not working with real facts.
LETS GET THE FACTS FIRST! IS SHE CAPABLE TO SPEAK OUT AND FIND OUT MORE IF SHE WAS GOING TO BE PART OF THE GANG!!
Our society is allowing to much violent shows on Television and part of that is the imitation of tv in real life.

It's funny how all the people who chide those who opportunistically use this terrible misfortune to lecture women on how to 'behave' themselves don't hesitate to use this terrible misfortune to lecture others on how to raise boys, respect another gender, etc.

However, maybe this event had little to do with gender and respect for women. Maybe it had more to do with race. Maybe the attackers saw the victim mostly as a white person upon which to vent their hatred of whites. Likewise, maybe all of the people who walked by without care for the girl did so because they had no affinity with nor sympathy for a white person.

Maybe the lesson here isn't how women should behave, or how boys should behave, but how minority groups (including whites among predominately black and latino persons) should be wary of those who aren't their kind -- because it's all too for majority gangs to treat minorities as sub-humans unworthy of the most basic consideration and respect.

Of course, unlike the other moral instructions people are retrofitting to this event, one of race consciousness and caution isn't a particularly trendy sermon to preach. So people instead will preach the sermons that will get them gold stars pasted on the foreheads by either their right-wing cohorts or their women's studies professors.

What is hard to articulate is: I am trying to imagine what she went through. And as awful and digusting and painful as the rape was....I can imagine that the more horrifying part was seeing that all these other people would not help me...and I know, I know in my heart that she was sure they were killing her, that it could only end one way, and in fact, they left her for dead. She could have had head trauma. She could have choked on her own vomit or died from internal bleeding. To know these were your last moments on earth. Why? Why would people do this to another person? And it won't stop, and it won't stop....maybe she knew some of them--and why would you do that to me, she was thinking. Did I diss you in the hallway at school? Did I turn you down when you asked me to the dance? All the reasons. It is so unfair. Please people, raise your boys to do better.

Good points - if this were a BOY who was GANG-RAPED by 10-15 boys, there would be NO DISCUSSION of the child "asking for it."
Because that is not acceptable in our society--whereas RAPING FEMALE CHILDREN IS ACCEPTABLE. When are we going to all wake up and see that this is the society we are living in, and unless there is a collective uprising, we are saying, "It is acceptable to have some rapes occur in our country. We can tolerate that."
***
It just got dark where I live. I am a single woman...and I feel trapped in my house. I live in a hip trendy nieghborhood. But what scares me almost more than the risk of being attacked is that NO ONE WOULD COME TO HELP ME. Thanks, America.

So, if women flirt with guys then that should lead to rape? So if his girl flirted with any of these guys, in your mind, it's ok that they raped her? Are you kidding me? I don't care if she drank and flirted and wore a mini skirt and had cleavage down to her knees........... NO WOMAN SHOULD BE BRUTALLY RAPED AND LEFT UNCONSCIOUS AND NAKED UNDER IN A PARK AFTER BEING TORTURED FOR HOURS BY NUMEROUS PIGS TAKING THEIR TURNS AT RAPING HER!!! Is this what our society has come to? Blaming the woman for this happening or the "oh well she must've wanted it or must've been asking for it if she was flirting with them". Have you forgotten what it was like to be young and have fun and go to dances and hang out with friends and drink a little and experiment? That is NO EXCUSE for that happened to her! No one deserves to be tortured that way - and have you read that they used foreign objects on her? I'm guessing she asked for that too right?? Some people out there make me sick! It makes me sick that there are animals who can do these things and then complete idiots who defend them.

Like I said in a previous post - if this was your friend, cousin, sister, niece or daughter, all you people blaming her for what happened would be feeling very differently right now.

Next time you're at a bar and you're flirting with a girl or you're out having fun with your friends, I hope some crazy girl doesn't come and stick some tree branch up YOUR *ss!!! Maybe then YOU'LL know what pain this girl has suffered.

Get a clue people!

Sorry for all my typos....but I think what is the hardest for some people is to realize we do NOT live in a just world. And let's be fair. If I say to my niece--do not drink at those dances; do not TAKE a drink from someone else; only drink from a soda can, not from the punch bowl; never go outside without your friends; only hang out with the boys you know are gay; stay inside until your Dad comes to pick you up--and she failed to do one of those things and was raped, would I blame her? No. I would feel and see and realize that this world is awful--dreadful, and there's nothing we do can protect our dear ones.

Women--most women also know, that even if a female child does EVERYTHING "right"--she could still be raped by the custodian, her own father, the boy she thought was her friend, the neighbor, the security guard, her cousin, her father's co-worker, the teacher, her friend's older brother...the list goes on. This is the world we live in. It is so awful, we can hardly stand it. Bu you can't put your daughters in a locked box. Don't you want them to live full rich lives?

Someone earlier in these comments said it best--the CRIMINALS are taking advantage of our lack of outrag--until we have a zero tolerance policy about RAPE--the CRIMINALS will use ANY EXCUSE to rape, until ultimately, it comes down to--

You were born a woman, so I raped you. And nothing would have stopped me. Nothing.

I am so saddened and sickened by all of this, and being clincally depressed right now, it almost sent me over the edge, because of how horrible human beings can be. I agree most with the person who posted this: "this she-was-asking-for-it scenario is part of a cognitive distortion called “belief in a just world”.(Essentially: I’m a good person=bad things won’t happen to me, thus, bad things only happen to bad people=they deserved it.)"
***
Everyone [who is not a rapist] knows how revolting how disgusting, how awful this all is. I can't even imagine it-actually, the sad thing is I can. I agree with the people who call it torture.
So....we are left with the misery that is out current world. And we feel powerless. We know that our duaghters, nieces, mothers, grandmothers, baby girls, friends--are all at risk. Tonight, this very night. My niece. My friend. My sister. It is too awful and upsetting and terrifying.

I was going to walk to the pharmacy to get some cold creme. Why walk? My car is not working. Why cold cream--I can't take a showed without it--my skin is too dry. Wny this time of day? I was working all day. If I get raped, will you all blame me? Trust me--I do not want to get raped--but I need to live my life.
***

What is frustating is knowing that some of these individuals will get away with it. I worry that this will embolden them to do something like it again.
***
As far as the bystanders--please someone in power realize that they were accomplices--all the prosecutors and experts seem to be saying it is too hard to get the bystanders--but if they were blocking the view of the authorities; videotaping; perhaps with their talking or Ipods, perhaps they obscured her screams--is that not being an acocmplice? An accomplice makes the crime possible, no? It will be hard though, but the police can sometimes get these idiots to turn against each other, so maybe they will say, "Yea, well so-and-so was standing around the whole time! He was the look out."

It's tricky--if I see a car being stolen, and do nto actively try to stop it--am I an accomplice? No. But if I, with a group of others STAND IN A CIRCLE AROUND THE CAR WHILE IT IS EBING STOLEN SO THAT OTHERS CAN'T SEE--sounds like an accomplice to me.

When I was a teen, I was chased by a bunch of guys. They didn't catch me, but I saw up close the ugliness in their hearts and minds.

Those of you blaming her, need to look at the faces and hearts of those young men. Look deeply and you will see the real problem.

This girl went to her prom dressed in a purple satin prom dress with a sparkley necklace. Think of her pleasure at looking so pretty, her excitement about the dance. Then think of her lying curled and brutalized in the dirt after hours of being tortured - that is what rape is, a form of torture. That's why it's used in Iranian prisons. Torture is what really happened.

Sick, sick. What a shame and horror.

And to think that her dad was running around looking for her while this was going on.

Why assume that she drank to unconsciousness because she wanted to? We don't know that. Maybe they shoved the bottle down her throat. Not unlikely, given what else they did.

Those of you who assume she inebriated herself are showing your bias towards blaming the victim. We don't know.

Do you remember the NY jogger gang rape a few years back?
The public outrage was loud and long. Is it because it was a brown on white crime? the victim was jogging, not drinking with her attackers? The victim in the Jogger case wasn't wearing provocative clothing?

I would like to know why it is that women are so devalued in this society that they are told that they are "asking for it" if they wear a certain type of clothing. Men can't control their criminal aggressive urges if they see too much cleavage? Women should anticipate being assaulted if they dare to walk out in the streets alone? Men can't control their criminal aggressions if they see a lone female on the street so WE have to change our lives? Women can't drink too much
for fear that someone will rape or assault her if she is incapacitated? Men can't control their criminal aggressive urges so WE have to change our lives to accommodate THEM?

I find that all very interesting. We live in a culture of the invisible Chador. In Islamic countries, women must be covered and remain indoors lest men be unable to control themselves. In this country women don't wear the Chador on the outside but on the inside. We are still allowed outside, but if we come to harm it must be our fault for letting the veil slip.

"But she could have been Flirting a little and tempting the men to force themselves on her"

And the lessons go 'round and 'round. "Don't drink, you might get raped! Don't flirt, you might get raped! Don't make eye contact, you might get raped! Don't go outside, you might get raped! Don't forget to lock the doors, you might get raped! You didn't lock the windows too? Oh, you're just asking for it now."

The stupidity of some people. This is why teachers, parents, media, etc should talk about incidents like these with their family so they understand what they did wrong which WAS NOT DRINK TOO MUCH.

It's so simple to see that the ones who put the fault on the victim would have been easily raped themselves. As if they know better, please. It's so easy to insinuate and say what she did wrong but anyone can make a mistake. We don't know much about the situation, and they could have easily been acquaintances of the poor girl.

I wish they knew how unintelligent they sounded. Morons.

Men need to learn how to respect Women better and with that said,
Women also need to learn how to have respect for themselves and their bodies!
This applies to this article in so many ways, im doubting it was consensual because she was beaten and robbed Therefore men should respect women more! But she could have been Flirting a little and tempting the men to force themselves on her. Either way someone or all of them were lacking respect in some way which totally sucks for the girl. But we will never know the whole truth cause people fabricate stories to fit their needs.
Im not makin excuses for the boys im just sayin, Ladies respect yourselves And maybe men will respect you too.
Either way rape is rape and its not right!!

People blame the victim because it lessens the horror of being able to identify with her. If they can believe that the girl made bad decisions, that she could've avoided it, or that her own choices put her in a position of "having it coming," then they can go on believing that something like that could never happen to them. As bad as victim blaming is, and as much as it does to further the idea that rape can be avoided if women would just be smarter and more careful, victim blaming is also what allows a lot of people to walk down the street without constantly looking over their shoulder, and nobody wants to live with that kind of fear.

I don't know about anyone else, but at 15 I was drinking (mind you, at home, with my gal pals and my parents around). I don't see anything wrong on her behalf. If these men (or were they her age?) get away with this, there is something seriously wrong with society and the judicial system. I hope (since I don't pray) that she gets the best of mental health care to overcome this. And I hope those guys are anally raped by huge 12 inchers in prison thrice a day (:

WHAT THE F@#! IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??!!!

As if NONE of the people who have said HORRIBLE things on this blog have ever made a mistake?!?!
Ya, she drank to much, big deal. Most of us do at some point or another. IT'S LEGAL. NO, she wasn't legal age to be drinking it, but it's not an illegal substance.

NO WOMAN DESERVES TO BE RAPED-FOR ANY REASON.
It's a DISGUSTING form of male domination and it repulses me that anyone would condone the rapists' complete lack of MORAL decency because of her HER drinking. For shame.

Kitty Genovese psychology/Bystander effect is one of a hoard of reasons we are a shameful species.

That poor poor girl. She will live with this for the rest of her life. This could take her over and ruin her life. I truly hope she has the strength and courage to carry on.

Yeah, I agree with the one brave person who pointed out that there is a difference between excusing criminals and blaming victims, on the one hand, and pointing out how to be safe, on the other. And you are not required to view everyone who comments as either feminist enough for you, or a hateful victim-blaming rapist-defender. Where is real life in this? In real life, unfortunately, we can't just rail against the bad things people do and hope they will stop, we also have to conform our conduct to our knowledge that people do those bad things and are probably not going to stop. It is not excusing muggers to suggest someone stay out of the alley at 3 a.m. It is not excusing abusive cops to suggest someone cooperate with the police even when they have done nothing wrong. And it is not excusing rapists to suggest someone behave according to their knowledge that there are rapists.

As for the person who said that those who believe "she was asking for it" have a just-world delusion: It is quite the opposite. It is the opposite of delusional to believe and say that women should look out for themselves and be smart because rapists will always be out there. It is, on the other hand, delusional to imply that women should be able to just do whatever they want and not worry about getting raped--it confuses what is right with what is.

I've seen so many articles like this. I'm sick of rape apologists, victim blaming and all the injustice surrounding rape today. Basically this she-was-asking-for-it scenario is part of a cognitive distortion called "belief in a just world".(Essentially: I'm a good person=bad things won't happen to me, thus, bad things only happen to bad people=they deserved it.) It's a dangerous assumption at the very least. Technically, it's an error in person perception, which should be recognized and excluded from the media, and the justice system.

I can't believe that you can even publish this crap. You are absolutely ridiculous and I'm sure you would have a completely different opinion if it were someone you loved or cared about. I think you are an embarrassment to society! What a piece of crap! I hope you never go to a party and consume alcohol and are put in the same situation. Rape is a very serious thing and it happens too often. Once is too often!! This crap needs to be removed and so should you, from ever opening your mouth again!!

I agree that this SHOULD be used as a lesson - but I don't feel it's right to say "well, she drank with them so she must've wanted something to happen" approach here. Let's not forget that she is 15 and regardless of whether or not she made a very bad decision, we don't know the circumstances. My belief is that she knew these kids and trusted them, could they have been complete strangers, sure anything is possible. But when you go to school, going to parties is the norm and hanging out with your friends. All kids drink and experiment, that's not to say that because she drank she caused herself to get drunk. If there were my daughter I would hope that I did a good job of raising her to be aware, but bad things happen. What about the jogger in Central Park, NY that was raped and killed while jogging! People are so quick to judge and point the fingers at what the girl did wrong but when will the men be held accountable and responsible for these types of brutal acts?? Was the Central Park jogger asking for it too by jogging in a very populated park? C'mon people... should the 15 year old been smarter, yes! But should this have happened to her, NO! Unfortunately, some of the best lessons we learn are through other people's misfortunes. So I agree that we can and should make a lesson out of this but that doesn't in any way mean that we should make light of what these guys did! No one asks to be brutal raped for over 2 hours and then tossed aside half naked and unconscious and left there! Where is the humanity! How would you feel if this was your cousin, niece or sister!? Would the circumstances be different if this were done to someone close to you and make you feel differently????

Funny, Alex, I thought the lesson would be that a man who takes any sort of sexual advantage of a drunk woman ought to be castrated with a spoon.

By the way, this is several orders of magnitude worse than the bang-your-drunk-date scenario, so maybe you are confused or something.

In all fairness, just pointing out that she did not act in the most intelligent manner is NOT the same as saying she deserved it. You're right, no one deserves to get raped, however, there IS the lesson here which is to be aware of your surroundings and of the possible consequences of decisions you make. Why SHOULDN'T this be used as a lesson. If one less girl decides maybe she shouldn't have another drink or walk home alone because of this story, then at least we have gotten something out of this awful situation.
