Marion Barry “I Wouldn’t Suck Your Dick” Collector’s Edition

Mike DeBonis' cover story on Marion Barry and his alleged stalkee's relationship-caught-on-voicemail is breaking news. The cover image is forever. The Washington Post has capitalized on selling commemorative copies of its Election 2008 issue, its Inauguration 2009 issue, and its Michael Jackson is dead issue. The Washington City Paper's "You Put Me Out in Denver 'Cause I Wouldn't Suck Your Dick" collector's edition is FREE, and available on newsstands tomorrow! Get 'em while they're hot.

D*mn, this is a NEW LOW if this makes the COVER STORY. I know you guys want to increase circulation (there's a pun there), but this is BAD. REALLY BAD. I mean bad enough not to want this week's addition in any respectable establishment.

  • Nikki

    I'll take two, please!

  • Coleman

A new low for CP? How about a new low for the Honorable Marion Barry?

  • Q

@Coleman, what's a new low for Barry when this was truly a personal matter? His sexual tastes (bad pun) really are none of our business. Even with some of the accusations confirmed, you gotta think of the angle here. This story ain't about the DNC Convention. It ain't even about oral sex. It is about Barry's relationship with her, period. Something that most folks wouldn't really be interested in, unless:

    1) They really don't have a lot going on in their lives so any scandal provides a vicarious means of pleasure

    or

    2) Someone looking to beat a wounded dog (Barry's character).

Rest assured, this crap will come up again during election time. THANKS CITY PAPER. Then again, maybe I shouldn't have raised City Paper's status in my mind as a reputable newspaper, hence they would be maintaining their low status.

There is nothing compelling about this story. Nothing beyond sensationalism. There was wrong on both sides and WCP scores for making the most provocative newspaper cover ever. I thought the Tony Cord cover was bad. This tops it.

  • Match

Hey Q, how 'bout the fact that he's an elected official? This "crap" (ie stalking) SHOULD come up again during election time, jackass.

  • http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist Amanda Hess

Q: How about 3) he hired and paid this woman to work for him. Is Barry hiring his girlfriend, then harassing his lover/employee and throwing his lover/employee out on the street for not sucking his dick relevant? Or is public malfeasance a "personal matter" now, too?

  • Q

Malfeasance is relevant Amanda. Show me the malfeasance without the sensational cover page. Why not use "Barry Hired girlfriend as assistant" or "Barry hired girlfriend for contracts in Ward 8". Both of those have the zing' for headline grabbing. But, they are OH SO BORING. But, a headline about being rebuffed or put out of a hotel room for not engaging in sexual favors really drives home the malfeasance angle. WCP's cover is hardly (another bad pun) worth the emphasis it is getting, especially if there is supposed to be some serious reporting behind it. This is so- "high school" that you might as well used, "Barry's girlfriend loses room for not putting out!" Defend LL all you wish, but in a sick way, even he knows he crossed the line.

Amanda, if Ms. Watts had a valid claim about being put out of the room, she should've contacted the Denver Police and this story should've been reported on back in August. Almost a YEAR later we are learning of this and all of a sudden trying to issue judgment on it. Not that there is a statute of limitations, but honestly only those who fit in 2) find this story interesting any more.

Match and Amanda, as I'm sure both of you listened to the voicemail messages and read Ms. Watts interviews, please understand that Barry's part in all this is the only thing that is being reported on with vigor. As it is MY tax dollars as well, I would want to be assured that whatever loopholes exist for things like this to happen be thoroughly examined. Once again, beat on Barry all you wish, but know that he isn't the FIRST or the LAST person to do something like this. He's the only one who GOT CAUGHT.

Match, stop deifying elected officials as if they shouldn't or can't do any wrong. If you don't, you will be continually disappointed from Fenty to Gray to Mendelson, to Catania, to Kwame Brown, to Evans, to Alexander, to Michael Brown, to Thomas, to Cheh, to Wells, to Graham, to Bowser, to Barry. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Just because you are not an elected official doesn't mean your sin is any greater or less than Barry's.

I believe Barry when he said that she has "issues". Listening to the voicemail message (provided by her ex-husband), proved that. She tried to distance herself from this, but Barry in his stupid scheduled press conferences, and the tapes brought this all back in.

The only thing people were looking for after the July 4th incident is WHY was he charged with stalking (an overzealous cop perhaps), and whether or not the charges would stick. In lifting up the rock that was Barry's and Watts' relationship, we get all these creepy things that have NOTHING to do with STALKING, especially since they went to lunch together EARLIER that day and initially had plans to spend the night/weekend together.

Q, why do you read this paper? I'm actually curious. Why?

  • jasmine

Good for the City paper. We have freedom of speech and press. The people that are outraged, act as thou they have never used or seen these words. Its bout time someone doesn't hold back. Seeing this on my birthday was so far the highlight of my day.

  • Q

I'm wondering the same thing myself Amanda, especially after this week. No, I don't read it simply to antagonize your articles, if that is what you are guessing.

To answer your question (though it seems rhetorical), I have to point to the past. Not to be funny, but this ain't The City Paper I've grown accustomed from the 90's. --- The edgy, grungy, counter-culture, independant, thumb-in-the-Washington-Post's-eye, inspiring articles one -- where you could find Matt Groenig's cartoons (prior to Simpson's fame). Once you guys got an online version, I actually was thrilled, because who wants to wait every Thursday for this type of news.

Then something weird happened, all of a sudden the quality of articles dropped. Like you guys were being paid for the quantity of blog stories you create instead of the quality. Add to that frequent copy editing mistakes, non-objective story slants, and WCP became a shallow rag. The rapper Common had a song out called 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' that spoke to Hip-Hop and how it became less relevant due to commercialism and diverted from its roots. I hope this isn't the fate of WCP, but one can't be too sure these days.

Basically, I want to wake up and read a good newspaper. So, for nostalgia sake, I keep reading expecting that day to return.

Actually, watchn Q & Amanda fight is better than reading the paper! Hire him.

    Q? Is that you?

Very low and unpleasant title (wording) in the city's paper on the MB issue. There must be a reason to publish a paper with a heading like that....it just isn't common sense....well overall common sense is just not pravelent in our society and it has seemingly the CP is loosing their. They are becoming blind to reality and thinking that titles of this nature, posted last week is what everybody wants to see or read. A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE....some just don't get the message but it is not too late to change.

This goes to show u how much the citypaper hates barry. I think most of this stems from his vote against gay marriage recognition. I hate when gay people compare civil rights with gay rights. They r no different than what they accuse Barry be. If Barry wants to get his _ick sucked so what. What r u gay people doing? Give me a break -- marion barry will aways be marion barry. I think all this publicity is helping him sue the smitherines out of the city. At the end of the day, this is only going to help him get rich.
