Women don't have better will power than men (they are just as incapable of losing weight etc) so they must simply lack the sex drive or the social guts or whatever. Basically the species is here today because men seek sex and women rear children. The nobility certainly falls to the latter category in the modern media, but it's all just a manifestation of biology that none of us asked for.

That's a good point, Ambiance. I should have made a distinction between Foley's online sexual exploits and these so-called "emotional affairs." The similarity comes in the fact that both online fantasies and emotional affairs are about exchanging words, not bodily fluids---and those words can be dug up by the press. But if an emotional affair is truly an affair, the words being exchanged will likely be clearly inappropriate---and in this day and age, it's probably going to end up on e-mail.

Totally agree, that "Love finds a way" is a great counter-argument for all reasons why it's more probable for male politicians. But in my opinion, "love" never was a factor in most of the sexual incidents in politics. But I totally agree that if love was involved, both men and women are equally likely to cheat.

Also the thing about emotional affairs - even though they leave paper trails, most would probably seem like emotional dependency, and wouldn't get slapped with the dreaded word of "affair". I don't know enough about Sanford's Emails, but wasn't Mark Foley's AIM conversation more sexual than emotional?

Well, we have more to lose if we get caught, so I don't think women are inherently better at hiding affairs, but we have more of an impetus to do so, because if we don't, we'll suffer much, much worse than men. My personal theory is that female politicians are more discreet about their affairs. Or maybe amidst all the brouhaha over clothing and which blouse exposed what cleavage, that woman could have an affair right under the media's nitpicky nose?
