Black Friday Turns Deadly
Beware the consumer impulse. From the New York Times:
A Wal-Mart employee in suburban New York died after being trampled by a crush of shoppers who tore down the front doors and thronged into the store early Friday morning, turning the annual rite of post-Thanksgiving bargain hunting into a frenzy.
The 34-year-old employee, who was not identified, was knocked down by a crowd that broke down the doors of the Wal-Mart at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, N.Y., and surged into the store. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital at 6 a.m.
Anyone heard any local shopping horror stories?

While hearing stories such as this are relatively nothing new on Black Friday, I am still very much disgusted at the behavior demonstrated by those at this particular Wal-Mart. Even more so disgusting – I was discussing this very incident with a co-worker when the neighborly crackpot decided to ask if we had heard of this story. When he learned that we had already been discussing the tragedy, the scum of the earth proceeded to smile.
Sure, this is a man who routinely sits in a Starbucks literally all day long and pisses his own pants – but still. is compassion that far out of reason?

I live really close to that store. We discussed this over at our blog and we’re basically just waiting for this to turn into ‘open season for racism’. :-(
