Will Vincent Orange Opponents Split The Vote?

Loose Lips headed to Busboys and Poets’ Brookland location Friday night, and he’s not even into vegan food. Instead, LL was drawn by the possibility that Andy Shallal—mogul of the restaurant chain, failed 2014 mayoral candidate, and occasional muse for lefty artists—would announce his run for a D.C. Council at-large seat.
About a dozen people who [...]

Uncle Earl’s Least Favorite Nephew

After Jeff Thompson admitted to running multiple illegal election schemes Monday, District also-rans must have wondered what could have been had the shadow campaign impresario not been on their opponents' sides. And no one has been foiled by Thompson more often than frequent D.C. Council candidate Pat Mara, who twice  came in second to opponents who received shadow-campaign help.
In two [...]

Plurality Rules

One by one they came to celebrate at the Channel Inn, the Southwest waterfront hotel, restaurant, and bar whose glory days are long gone. Once a favorite hangout of Marion Barry, his mayoral administration’s insiders, and various hangers-on during the ’80s, the quirky joint will soon be torn down to make way for what seems [...]

Ain’t No Party Like a Patrick Mara Party

Cautious optimism at the Patrick Mara party at Columbia Heights' the Coupe has soured into maybe-next-year, as the election returns turned against the GOP candidate even before his 20-something campaign volunteers could get Board of Election results on the TV.
On hand for the switch: former Phil Mendelson campaign volunteer Nicole Whiteman, who ditched Democratic candidates [...]

Republican Reboot

This we know for sure: Exactly a year from next Tuesday, D.C. voters will head to the polls and vote overwhelmingly in favor of re-electing President Barack Obama.
What’s still unknown is whether Mitt Romney, or Herman Cain, or whoever the GOP gets around to nominating, will have any company on a losing local ticket that [...]

The Debate, In Photos and Sound

If you didn't make it to the Black Cat for last night's Loose Lips D.C. Council candidates' debate, you missed out on, among other things, Patrick Mara scooping the Washington Post on its endorsement of him in the race; Bryan Weaver sipping a Pabst Blue Ribbon tall-boy; Vincent Orange and Sekou Biddle bashing each other [...]

One Lucky Republican

Is Patrick Mara the luckiest sonofabitch in D.C. politics?
He was looking that way until this weekend, when news broke that the sole Republican in the April special election for an at-large D.C. Council seat might be booted from the ballot for submitting petition signatures that appeared forged.
Suddenly, things seemed bleak for Mara. One need not [...]

Sekou Biddle Wants To Be Your Councilmember

Let’s get this out of the way: The ear-to-ear scar that runs atop the crown of Sekou Biddle’s skull is the result of some asshole blindsiding him with a pool cue in the mid-’90s when he was trying to head off a bar fight. The single whack, which the newest member of the D.C. Council [...]

Bryan Weaver Officially Drafted

The powers behind the "Draft Bryan Weaver" campaign to get the former Ward 1 Council candidate to run in this April's citywide at-large race won a victory this morning. Weaver, a former chairman of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1C in Adams Morgan, announced on TBD's NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt that he'd enter the race.
Former DCist contributor [...]
