Uncle Earl’s Least Favorite Nephew

After Jeff Thompson admitted to running multiple illegal election schemes Monday, District also-rans must have wondered what could have been had the shadow campaign impresario not been on their opponents' sides. And no one has been foiled by Thompson more often than frequent D.C. Council candidate Pat Mara, who twice  came in second to opponents who received shadow-campaign help.
In two [...]

Former Michael Brown Treasurer Charged With Blowing Campaign Fund on Jet-Setting

It's been a week of highs and lows for disgraced former D.C. Councilmember Michael A. Brown. Already humiliated last year after taking bribes in sports team merchandise, he saw shadow campaign maestro Jeff Thompson drag his name through the mud a little more this Monday as he described Brown taking a $200,000 payoff to drop out of the 2006 [...]

Michael Brown Took $100K+ In Off-the-Books Help for 2008 At-Large Run

Disgraced former At-Large Councilmember Michael Brown has admitting receiving more illicit help from an individual resembling businessman Jeff Thompson in his 2008 run for office, according to new court filings.
Brown already admitted receiving off-the-books money from the unnamed businessman in an unsuccessful 2007 Ward 4 run after he was caught in an FBI bribery sting last June. But the [...]

Loose Lips Quote of 2013: Michael Brown

"Do you have the piece of the piece?" – former At-Large Councilmember Michael Brown, Nov. 17 and Nov. 19, 2012.
LL hasn't been ranking the top quotes of 2013, but let's be real. Michael Brown won the year. Not in the sense of actually winning, of course, since Brown, who started the year with a frontrunner election campaign [...]

The Loosies: The Best, Worst, and Weirdest in D.C. Politics in 2013

The District’s political world felt like it spent most of 2013 in the waiting room: waiting for U.S. Attorney Ron Machen to charge somebody, waiting for Mayor Vince Gray to announce whether he would run again, waiting for the wave of criminal councilmembers to subside (adios, Michael Brown!). 2013 was a two-hour movie trailer, 365 [...]

Loose Lips Quotes of 2013: Nominations

2013: what a year for words. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Paul Quander worried about something "untoward" in the ambulance fires, and Ron Machen insisted that there's "there there" in his  investigation into political corruption. Vince Gray told Muriel Bowser to "bring it on," and Marion Barry nominated the National Park Service for "Mofo of the Month."
On Dec. 30, LL will start running blog posts on the [...]

Michael Brown Gets His Last Holiday

Disgraced ex-councilmember Michael Brown is going to Disney World! Or at least somewhere in the general vicinity. In a court order last week, a federal judge approved Brown's request to travel to Florida between Dec. 25 and Jan. 2 on a family trip.
This won't be Brown's first trip outside the D.C. area since pleading guilty [...]
