Ward 4 hopeful Doug Sloan dropped out of the special election race two weeks ago, but only today is he revealing who he’s endorsed. Surprise: It’s the only candidate left who has enough money to beat overwhelming frontrunner Brandon Todd.

Sloan now backs Leon T. Andrews Jr., who reported nearly $56,000 cash on hand on Monday. That’s not all due to Andrews’ fundraising prowess, though. In March and April, he loaned his campaign $90,000. The loans make up more than 60 percent of the total money that Andrews’ campaign has raised in total.

“He’s financially situated to make the best run at Brandon Todd,” Sloan says.

And yet, Andrews isn’t situated that well. Also on Monday, Todd reported more than $160,000 left in his bank account, nearly three times Andrews’ reserve with the election a week away.

So far, Sloan and Andrews haven’t succeeded at convincing other candidates to drop out.  In a statement from his campaign, Andrews urged his rivals to “follow Doug’s lead and what’s best for the good people of Ward 4.”
