Police Union Will Endorse David Catania

Democratic mayoral hopeful Muriel Bowser has been stacking up labor endorsements, but now David Catania has a union endorsement of his own. The District's chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police will endorse Catania tomorrow, according to Catania's campaign and union leadership.

FOP chairman Delroy Burton says the union picked Catania in part because of his work on the troubled United Medical Center and his education reforms.

"While I certainly don’t agree with him all the time and we’ve taken opposite positions, I think he’s a man of integrity," Burton says.

Still, the union didn't have much of a choice. Burton says Bowser didn't seek the union's general election endorsement after winning the primary. (Bowser's campaign hasn't responded yet to LL on whether she skipped the general election endorsement.)

Catania campaign manager Ben Young says the endorsement amounts to a "a vote of confidence" in Catania's candidacy.

It's not clear, though, how much the FOP endorsement will help the independent Catania. Only around 840 of the union's 3,600 members live in the District, according to Burton, and the union isn't planning to match the media blitz it arranged when it endorsed primary hopeful Tommy Wells—who lost anyway.

Yikes -- I had no idea so few MPD officers actually live in the City they police. That really has to change, from the standpoint of identifying with the community you serve and feeling a connection to the city. Maybe their relatively low pay has something to do with it, considering real estate prices -- those guys just got a modest pay raise, after a bunch of years without one. Maybe Catania can do better for them.

Either the FOP leaders are dumb as a box of rocks or looks like Catania sent some M.C. Dean money to the union leadership. Catania has been very public about wanting to gut the police, firefighters and teachers pension fund. Supporting him for Mayor is telling the younger members we don't care what happens to your pension, we got ours.

"Catania has been very public about wanting to gut the police, firefighters and teachers pension fund."

hm-m-m-m. Really? How about some cites to back up those claims.

SO HE MAYBE AND I AM BALLPARKING HERE WILL GET 100 TO 200 VOTES BASED ON THIS ENDORSEMENT?

THE FOP ARE A BUNCH OF SELLOUTS ANYWAY!!!
    AND WHO GIVES A FUCK???

WE SEE RIGHT THROUGH HIS TRANSLUCENT ASS.
    WE WILL NOT BE FOOLED.
    WASHINGTONIANS WILL LAUGH LAST.
HIS BITCH ASS WILL WILL NOT DELIVER THIS JEWEL.

  • Tight Lips

One more reason not to vote for Catania!

  • Roscoe’s Wetsuit

    Ah Noodlez, welcome back!

In your absence you must have forgotten that many of us Washingtonians have been laughing for the past four years - at your beloved Done City!

After all that, you're a Bowser Backer now?

  • Ward8

Take an Independent stance...vote integrity, accountability, responsiveness. VOTE CATANIA

  • SayWhat

Black people trust and believe, there will be several Michael Brown's in the town. Let the riots begin if Councilmember David Catania were to win. Thank goodness he won't win.

  • SayWhat

Noodlez, please keep ignoring Roscoe's Wetsuit, he is a supporter of David Catania and why does he keep asking you the same damn question. (Message). Noodlez we know what we have to do to keep David Catania out of office, band together by any means necessary.

@SayWhat: Say what? When have I ever said I supported Catania - please provide a reference. You won't find one.

I'm undecided, although Boswer has done the city an incredibly valuable service in getting rid of Vince and his merry band of incompetents.

Consequently, I'm very interested in why those who so vocally condemned Bowser (like Noodlez) are now jumping to her defense. I'm not as interested in the lesser lights of the onecitidiot faction, but chime in if you must. I just might read it.

    Cheers!

The first thing Miss Catania should do as mayor is to get rid of Cathy Lanier, the Police Chief. Its my understanding, morale is very low within MPD.

  • Adam 12

noodlez, who are you supporting, Bowser or Catania? Neither candidate is attractive enough to vote for. Its sad that these are the only candidates running for mayor in a city of 600,000 residents.

  • Adam 12

SayWhat, I hope will never have a Michael Brown situation in Washington, D.C. There are hoodlums out there waiting for any excuse to start trouble in U.S. cities. The media has been giving this situation too much press and attention.

  • Adam 12

    Correction:

SayWhat, I hope WE will never have a Michael Brown situation in Washington, D.C.

  • SEis4ME

Yeah this is a rather meaningless endorsement but Dcatania will need all the help he can get.

    He surely has my vote...

  • Not Paid Enough

@ TboneBullets - "relatively low pay" in comparison to whom: congress-critters, attorneys, airline pilots?

In comparison to other cops in the metro area, MPD salaries are higher than almost all other departments - and that was BEFORE the recent increase.

And contrary to popular but misinformed opinion, MPD officers have received pay increases every year since 2008, when eligible for step increase. EVERY other department has had step increases frozen in some or most of those years. True, MPD did not receive COLAs since 2008, but then again, NO other department received COLAs in all those years, either.

So, dont cry about no pay increases for MPD when 1. its not true, and 2. even without a COLA for all those years MPD salaries are still higher than almost all other police departments in the area.

@SEis4ME: Interesting! If I may ask, had Gray won the primary and was running against Catanaia, who would be your choice then? No sarcasm, just genuine interest.

    Thanks!

  • SEis4ME

Had Gray won, I would have never even considered voting for Catania.

  • DCShadyBoots

    Good for Catania!

    He has my vote.

  • Marvin E. Adams

Endorsements are nice, but like corporations, they do N-O-T vote. D.C. residents new mantra: One(1) person, one vote!

  • Retired Cop70

Only 840 union members of the police department live in the city. I'm surprised the number is that high! Even the Police Chief doesn't live in DC, more like Onley, Maryland, so don't believe the hype that she lives in Fort Lincoln. As for the union President Burton does he live in DC I don't think so. This endorsement isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Am sure many members of the rank and file would not agree with the FOPs decision. The FOP hasn't gotten a candidate right in years.

  • FRUSTRATED

NO INCENTIVES TO LIVE IN THE CITY....I AM NOT GOING TO POLICE OFF DUTY WHEN I GET PAID TO DO MY JOB ON DUTY. THE CITY DDOESNT CARE ABOUT THE POLICE...
