Catania Refunds Donation from ANC Commissioner Accused in Homeless Attack

The bizarre tale of Dupont Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Robert Leo Dwyer, accused of yelling a racial slur and squirting cleaning solution at a homeless man, now has a connection to the mayoral campaign. After taking a $250 contribution from Dwyer in May, David Catania campaign has refunded his money.

Dwyer's contribution to Catania's mayoral bid wasn't lost on supporters of chief Catania rival Muriel Bowser, who needled him about it on Twitter. Still, Catania aide Ben Young says the campaign sent Dwyer a check two days after his alleged attack on the homeless man was reported. (Dwyer, who apologized after a court appearance for the incident, didn't respond to LL's request for comment).

“It’s not in line with our campaign," Young says.

As long as LL's talking unsavory donors, though, Young is happy to point out that Bowser has some of her own. In an email to LL, Young asks what the Bowser campaign plans to do with $20,000 it received from Phinis Jones, the Bowser donor and birthday party co-host at the center of the Park Southern affordable housing scandal. Jones, who hasn't been charged with anything and insists that he's innocent, is accused of refusing to hand over nearly $300,000 worth of rent money, even as he tries to buy the Ward 8 complex on the cheap.

Bowser spokesman Joaquin McPeek declined to comment on the fate of contributions from Jones. But the Bowser campaign could be cutting some refund checks before next week's campaign finance deadline anyway. McPeek says the campaign is considering returning money it received from charter school operator Kent Amos, who's being sued by the District for allegedly siphoning off charter school money to a for-profit management company.

So Catania refunds $250 without hesitation, but Murial continues to hold on to the 20,000+ from the Park Southern situation. This seems like business as usual for the Murial crowd and seems hard to justify on any level.

  • Smh

This is clear cut. The Park Southern mess is not, especially with lawsuits filed and an OIG investigation.

Looks like Catania has been reading Lorenzo's facebook postings.

Why am I not surprised that a racist, White, gay man with anger issues supports Catania?

  • DCShadyBoots

Catania gives the money back, Bowser makes the Park Southern crooks prominent hosts of her big birthday bash/fund raiser.

    Ms. Ethics? Not so much...

@Noodlez, I really DO enjoy your commentary. But lately you seem so HATEFUL against gays. It is a sexual orientation not a defining character trait. There are racist gays, straights, Republicans, Democrats, etc.

Are we to judge Mayor Gray because he is old?

Maybe M.C Dean could offer the homeless man a job?

(He indicates he thinks it’s impossible for LL to write this article without implying that Catania is in some way corrupt.) ... Even so, Catania’s employment at M.C. Dean still looks iffy. Should D.C. really have a system where councilmembers vote on bills that affect how their employers, their employers’ partners, and their employers’ competitors do business here?"

"Two years ago, after Dean rented his company’s trucks and crews to Jim Graham to put up campaign signs, he told the Washington Post: “In Washington, it’s important that businesses stay involved, and one of the ways that you’ve gotta stay involved is that you have to be active in contributing to people that you can occasionally count on for support.”

"Dean has helped finance ads against former Councilmember Carol Schwartz (largely because she supported mandatory paid leave), leased office space to Councilmember Michael Brown’s 2008 campaign at a rock-bottom rate, and funded a nonprofit that has pushed back against union-friendly changes to city construction laws."

I think that offensive, homophobic posts like that from Noodlez, who won't uses his/her name so no one knows who he/she is, should be removed from this list.

While I am not a supporter of Catania for Mayor calling him names like that is hate speech and should be offensive to, and condemned by, any decent person.

Returning $250.... That doesn't convince me Catania is a great mayor for ALL OF DC!

Tell him to Ban outside employment, then I might take him serious.

  • DC John

What I find somewhat amusing/perplexing: It is totally legal for everyone on our "illustrious" City Council (with the exception of its Chair) to hold additional employements as our Council is considered only a "part-time" job!
Where is the outrage over their "part-time" salaries (I believe it is over $125K annually)
Let's cut the crap and go for a change in the Charter making all future Council positions as full time jobs. I also bet that if we had a referendum on that issue, the entire Council (probably led by Jack Evans) would vote to overturn it the same way it did over the Term Limits votes.

  • lost cause

this park southern is a real mess

  • freshly bathed cat

How about Catania reports how much money he has made from M.C. Dean and for M.C. Dean related work? How about he refunds that? Is it over $2 million? What does he need all that money for? When looking for a job with a contractor does it help that you are on the City Council?

  • noodlez

NOT HATE NOR HOMOPHOBIC. JUST STATING THE OBVIOUS AND TELLING IT LIKE IT IS. STRONG WORDS MAKE A STRONG STATEMENT.

@SHADY IF GAYS WANNA BE ACCEPTED THEN THEY GONNA GET IT JUST LIKE ANY OTHER BAMMA.

PETER MY GOVERNMENT NAME HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY COMMENTS

  • GoldCoastKid

NOODLEZ. Ignorant black folks like you make it hard for the rest of us(black folks). Just go away already.

And for the last time... when you type in all caps its perceived as YELLING. And that's annoying for people to read. Funny but you're pseudonym is actually spelled in lower case. So wile we're whispering noodlez, you're YELLING your stupid bigoted posts.

  • noodlez

@Goldie-MAN UP MOTHER FUCKA! YOUR IGNORANCE IS IN BELIEVING THAT MY PERCEPTION AND OPINIONS HAVE A BERING ON THE UPWARD MOBILITY OF MY PEOPLE. IF YOU WERE MORE BLACK THAN WHATEVER YOU PRETEND TO BE THEN YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND WHAT I SAID AS OPPOSED TO HOW I SAID IT BAMMA ASS MOFO!

  • tony

So Catania who is a white gay man can openly attack his black female opponent as being “brainless” and ‘"stupid” without being condemned by the same people are now offended by an innocent observation.

In fact, this same group of people laugh at and often repeat the worst stereotypes of black women and black people in general.

But as soon as someone say something that offends “their” little group then they want to censor opinions and silence speech. The harsh reality is that not everyone accept the homosexual lifestyle or ever will.

Catania’s sexuality should be and is fair game in this election just as he and his supporters have made his opponents intellect an issue.

    DEAL WITH IT!
