LGBT Group Backs Candidates in At-Large, Ed Board Races

The sizable at-large D.C. Council candidate field won't start being winnowed down until ballot petitions are due next month, but that hasn't stopped candidate Courtney R. Snowden from landing an endorsement that could lead to a fundraising windfall. Today, prominent LGBT group the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund endorsed Snowden, a resident of Ward 7's Deanwood neighborhood.

“I think it’ll help me stand out," Snowden tells LL. "I think I stand out quite a bit already.”

Fair enough! The endorsement could give Snowden, who previously ran the D.C. Black Pride group, access to some deep-pocketed backers in a race that's already attracting big money. In its endorsement, the Victory Fund called Snowden a "staunch advocate for students and education from the start."

The Victory Fund, which plans to hold a fundraiser at its office next Thursday for mayoral hopeful David Catania, also backed Ward 1 State Board of Education candidate Scott Simpson today. In November, Simpson will face Lillian PerdomoE. Gail Anderson Holness, and David Do for the seat.

“They do have a donor network, and I think it’s going to be easier for me to tap into that with the endorsement," Simpson tells LL.
