Ex-Ward 1 Candidate Jeff Smith Charged in Jeff Thompson Case

The federal pursuit of D.C. Council candidates accused of getting illicit help from shadow campaign financier Jeff Thompson continues. After scoring a guilty plea from one-time at-large hopeful Kelvin Robinson earlier this month, prosecutors filed a charge today accusing former Ward 1 candidate Jeff Smith of also covering up off-the-books aid from Thompson.

Smith, a former member of the District's school board, ran in 2010 against Councilmember Jim Graham. Graham won easily, while Smith split the rest of the votes evenly with fellow Graham challenger Bryan Weaver.

Smith is charged with making a false statement in connection with Office of Campaign Finance reports about his campaign's bank records. If convicted of the felony, Smith could spend as much as five years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Smith, who's listed online as the executive director of school reform group DC Voice, didn't respond to a request for comment. Smith is expected in court sometime this afternoon.

According to the complaint, Thompson took money from both his accounting firm and the holding company for his Medicaid contractor which was then either spent by Smith's campaign or by someone outside the campaign who was coordinating with it. While the complaint against Smith doesn't list how much Thompson allegedly spent on the Ward 1 hopeful, Thompson admitted to illicitly spending $140,000 on a Ward 1 race in his guilty plea.

    So.........still nothing on Gray?

  • DCShadyBoots

Ron Machen is the worst! I loathe this self hating snake in the grass.

  • Boss Hogg

What a mess or scandal this is turning into Move over Kerry Washington, Scandal doesn't have anything on DC politics in real life. LOL

I am surprised they haven't found any dirt on Muriel Bowser, Jack, Evans, and others.

  • Roscoe’s Wetsuit

So let me get this straight - Machen is the worst for doing his job?!?! You think maybe these politicians are the worst for continuing to break laws?

    And how is Machen self-hating?

Look, DCSB, I'm as pleased as everyone else to be dancing on One City's grave, which must be hard for you. But come one, check back in with reality.

  • lost cause

So they are going to let it go from Bowser and Fenty getting all of the money they got from Thompson

  • DCShadyBoots

@Roscoe's peesuit, CATCH FIRE!, that means "go to hell", Queen Machen has made a mockery of our electoral process. He has arguably committed proprietorial misconduct by insinuating that the Mayor committed a crime just before the primary election and, to date, he hasn't charged him with anything. But we'll leave that to the DC Bar to sort out. He is "self loathing" in that he has demonstrated a taste for only prosecuting African American politicians associated with Jeffrey Thompson. It may be a "fear gene" he has from slavery days.

  • Roscoe’s Wetsuit

@DCSB - proprietorial misconduct? Huh? Does Ron own a chain of Hardee's that have run afoul of the health inspector? I'm thinking you mean PROSECUTORIAL misconduct, and I'm also guessing that you are not an attorney. As to the DC bar, good luck waiting on that - but this late in the onecitidiot game, perhaps best to tilt at the nearest windmill.

Pure comedy - thanks for the chuckle. Next!

    @Roscoe, catch this shade, EVERGREEN!

You are characteristically one of those Democrats in the District that advances yourself, in your own little world, as being smarter than the next. Yet, at the end of the day you have voted for or, in this case, refused to vote, leaving the party with one of the weakest empty dresses as a candidate in your general election since Home Rule. Talk about wickedly dumb, no record, losing her own precinct. Say what you may about the sitting Mayor, he has gotten things done while the closet case sat on the Council riding the coat tails of her colleagues. Disparaging Vincent Gray does nothing to propel the intelligence or legislative record of the chick you will be presumably supporting in the general. Good luck with that.

  • Roscoe’s Wetsuit

DCSB, I think you're between stations. I'd appreciate it if you could answer the following questions:

    1. What is Ron Machen the proprietor of?
    2. Where in my comment did I mention that I refused to vote?
    3. Where in my comment did I mention Muriel Bowser?
    4. Are you a clinical psychologist, or the equivalent? This question is in response to your repeated "diagnoses" of Ron Machen.

    Please and thank you!

It's called autocorrect, smartass, which in this instance, isn't so "correct". You got the jist of it obviously. But, of course, you felt compelled to be the annoying spelling police. DO get over yourself honey.

I, admittedly, make many assumptions because folks aren't forthright. So let me ask you:

    Did you vote?
Did you vote for Muriel Bowser?

The ethics complaint against her heinous (spelling intentional)Machen is pending with the bar. I'll let them sort through his messiness.

It is offensive, no matter who one supports, for a US attorney to go out of his way to put the mayor's guilt in play, in political play, three weeks before an election, and not charge that mayor with anything.

I've lost all respect for Machen.
