Feds Let Jeff Thompson Leave the Country

Admitted illicit campaign mastermind Jeff Thompson doesn't have another court hearing until late July, but he won't be spending all the time until then in the District. With the blessing of the U.S. Attorney's Office, a federal judge ruled last week that Thompson can leave on June 7 this month for Jamaica.

The benefits of leaving town during a criminal investigation aren't lost on Thompson. He allegedly tried to convince associate Jeanne Clarke Harris to head to Brazil to stymie investigators. Admitted Vince Gray shadow campaign operative Vernon Hawkins claimed in his own guilty plea that Thompson wanted him to convince a caterer connected to one of Thompson's illicit efforts to leave the District.

Apparently, the U.S. Attorney's Office isn't worried about Thompson going on the lam. The approval for Thompson's trip, according to U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Matthew Jones, came after Thompson met all the conditions of his release. Thompson's attorney didn't respond to a request for comment.

"The government agreed to consent to Mr. Thompson’s request that the court allow him to travel to Jamaica for a short period to visit his ailing 95-year-old mother, whose health is deteriorating," Jones writes in an email.

Of course, there's another reason to expect that Thompson will come back. Since he's facing a potential sentence of just six months of home detention, why run?

I'm sure Jeff Thompson wants to stop by the Cayman Islands to visit his off shore bank accounts filled with taxpayer dollars he siphoned off while providing crappy or no services to Chartered Healthcare members.
