Marion Barry Endorsing Vince Gray Tomorrow

Mayor-for-Life Marion Barry will endorse Vince Gray for another term tomorrow afternoon. The announcement, which starts at 1 p.m., will be held at Matthews Memorial Baptist in Barry's Ward 8.

With the endorsement of Ward 7's Yvette Alexander locked up since the day he announced, the endorsement tomorrow from the Ward 8 councilmember will give Gray support from both of the east-of-the-Anacostia-River councilmembers. Over the weekend, Gray's campaign circulated the video above, in which Barry urges people to come meet Gray. Barry had also supported Gray in the 2010 election.

Earlier in the race, Barry met other mayoral candidates seeking his endorsement for lunches and judged them according to Ward 8 and African-American-themed agendas that he came up with. While Barry spokeswoman LaToya Foster confirmed that Barry will endorse a candidate tomorrow, she declined to name who the candidate will be (the news had originally been embargoed).

Washington Post reporter Paul Schwartzman accidentally broke the embargo on a Gray campaign media release this morning, inspiring a classic rage-out from Gray campaign manager Chuck Thies on Twitter. Despite an apology from Schwartzman, Thies promises to make the reporter a "poster child" for the Post's "recklessness," although he wouldn't explain how.

“Do you know what the most dangerous thing in nature is, Will?" Thies says, without elaborating on the metaphor. "A wounded animal."

I thought it was a cornered rat. Also applies here.

  2. #2

Does Thies have any clue just how many undecided voters he is pushing away from his candidate? What a jerk!

    @ #2: In answer to your query: It's either I-G-N-O-R-A-N-C-E or A-P-A-T-H-Y, or worst yet - B-O-T-H!

  4. #4

...and the sun will rise in the east and set in the west, 2 + 2 = 4...

  5. #5

What does it say about you as a candidate when your campaign is managed by someone who seems dangerously unhinged? I was afraid this would end with Will tied up in a chair in Thies's basement, forced to feast on Paul Schwartzman's liver.

Bruce Johnson reported this weeks ago. I heard it from another source last week. Thies is hyping some bs, getting attention and casting aspersions the only way he can.

  7. #7

Wow, I see the C's have joined forces, the crackhead and the crook. Good luck with that!

    @Jane

    With fava beans?

Chuck, take your meds!!! You need to learn about boundaries...you screw yourself every time. You are running circles around the children's crusade and Shufflebunny. Do not screw it up over chump change.

Now that you have cut Bowser off at the river she will have to abandon her closet in a desperate bid for the 30% of the electorate she thinks shouldn't think being gay is an issue - its not, however being authentic is.

Petula got it wrong. Bowser doesn't have a Sharon problem, Gray does. He has all of Sharon's problems (and has reappointed many of them) but Sharon faced a far more dire situation then endlessly recounting Tony Williams' cranes. I can't decide who that tripe was more insulting/condescending to, Ms. Pratt or black women generally. People recognize dumb and phoney when they see it.

Now, Gray will certainly carry Wards 7 & 8. A definite MUST if he is to win. He will garner a large sum of voters in Ward's 4 & 5 as well and likely win the Primary. Gray's attorney has made it clear that if the US Attorney seeks an indictment against the Mayor there will be no plea deal forcing Ron Machen to put up or shut up in court. This should be interesting. Machen's bluff has been called.

Nothing like a native washingtonian receiving the blessing from Barry to keep ward 8 in shambles and the powers that be to still reign over that area.

Barry & Alexander know that if they do not support Gray, they will not be in their seats come next election season.

And on the 13th day, a day which was also the first of April, a minority of the voter pool elected a democratic candidate with a minority of the voter pool's votes, and yea, verily, it was good.

And then the day lengthened into a very long day, honest as the day is long, and a real election began.

    Ummmm, toasty.

  13. #13

+1 to John and +100 to Jane. I like Gray, but really, why is his campaign being run by a petulant toddler?

  14. #14

@SAYWHAT- YOUR FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE OF A CRACKHEAD(YOUR MOM) AND A CROOK(THE PERSON YOUR MOM THINKS IS YOUR DADDY) FINALLY BECAME OF SOME USE. THAT WEAK ASS COMMENT IS NOTHING MORE THAN YOU SHADOWBOXING IN THE MIRROR.

THE FAKE ASS APOLOGY CONTRIVED BEFORE THE DELIBERATE RELEASE BY THAT JOKER SHOWS THE SUB-STANDARD LEVEL OF THE "SO-CALLED" MEDIA IN ORDER TO ASSOCIATE THEIR NAME WITH A STORY.

Barry is just a crook supporting another crook (Vince Gray). I hope Ward 8 doesn't fall for this. We need a Mayor we can trust and with integrity. It's a sad day in this city. I have put my faith and trust in God because I know he will never fail me. I have been failed by too many politicians in this city.

Mayor Gray will be re-elected, period.

    Go Vince Go!

From a purely objective point of view, this is H-U-G-E! It does N-O-T matter how anyone may wish to spin this endorsement, because it carries an enormous amount of weight. Especially within the predominately African-American enclaves of Wards 7 & 8. Additionally, it is important to note the fact that the voters within the District have N-E-V-E-R shown a propensity of exercising their right to vote, except during presidential elections.

If Wards 7 & 8 are in the Mayor's column come election day, it bodes extrenely well for him. It's a given that some voters in the remaining Wards will also cast their ballots for him as opposed to against him. That said, I am of the opinion that he will receive just enough of the votes in Wards 1-6 to win the primary.

Hahaha smh. Gray as Mayor keeps Barry and Yvette sitting tight and doing NOTHING for EOTR...

The Native Washingtonians do not care about the condition of the city, they just want to be included in the action.

Anytime someone challenges a candidate EOTR in a city-wide election, its all about race.

Your going to be sad when there is so much economic development and new stuff being built EOTR that Gray wont be able to save you from moving out or being kicked out because the cost of living is so damn high.

Thanks for investing in your future.

If EOTR cant take care of itself, wait till someone else gets a hold of it!

  19. #19

Those who are familiar with the movie called Uptown Saturday...Gray and Barry reminds me of the Poitier and Cosby characters.

"Your going to be sad when there is so much economic development and new stuff being built EOTR that Gray wont be able to save you from moving out or being kicked out because the cost of living is so damn high".

Not at all, in fact I welcome it.....you see..........
some of us EOTR OWN our properties!!!!!

  21. #21

All of the candidates made a pitch to Barry, he rejected all but Gray's.

If he had endorsed [insert favorite candidate] none of the criticisms would apply.

This is how these endorsements work. They're only relevant when they support your candidate. \

  22. #22

    Amen to that S.E.

That was just a rant to make him/her feel better in the face of an election defeat.

    Deflection.

  23. #23

    No rant, just truth.

@SE your right... SOME of yall do own your properties but...THE MAJORITY OF YOU ALL DON'T and lots of folks live in Apartment complexes.

The minimum wage bill that VO wanted to get passed, would have allowed MORE RESIDENTS to purchase properties and actually STAY in WARD 7 & 8 before the economic boom happens EOTR.... Sadly Vince Gray & Yvette Alexander didnt want the wages to be that high, and then fools got on TV saying "We would rather want jobs here than none at all" lol smh.

No integrity, no backbone. Willing to receive anything these politicians throw at you just to keep your praised figures in office who do very litle.

I live around Saratoga, I'll tell you one thing ORANGE aka BULLFROG aka UGLY MANE aka Your Favorite CM's Biggest Threat KEPT HIS PROMISE ABOUT BRINGING JOBS TO OUR WARD, BETTER EDUCATION FOR OUR KIDS, and BETTER BUSINESSES TO OUR SIDE OF TOWN.

AND I DIDNT SEE GRAY OR MARION BARRY CREATE DC EMANCIPATION DAY, SO I DONT WANT TO HEAR ANYMORE TALK ABOUT "HOLDING A BLACK MAN DOWN" BECAUSE MB & GRAY AREN'T DOING ENOUGH TO HOLD THEMSELVES UP ON THEIR OWN.

SOME OF YALL ARE STILL STUCK ON "BARRY GAVE MY GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER A JOB SO EVERY GENERATION HAS TO VOTE AND DO EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS"

Marion Barry fans... where are the jobs in Ward 8 that Barry is suppose to give his folks now? Right in the pockets of everyone who he consistently disrespects lol.
