A Look at the Cash That Jeff Thompson Gave to Other D.C. Politicians

The two conspiracy charges filed against alleged Vince Gray shadow campaign financier Jeff Thompson today in federal court probably couldn't come at worse time for the mayor, who is running for re-election and has long denied any wrongdoing. In court today—just three weeks before the crowded, April 1 Democratic primary—prosecutors said that Gray knew about the illegal shadow campaign. In all, Thompson is said to have provided more than $2.3 million in illicit contributions to federal and local campaigns.

While the mayor is being accused of knowing of a shadow campaign to help him get elected, he's hardly the only mayoral candidate who has received cash from Thompson. In fact, every mayoral candidate currently sitting on the council—except for Ward 6's Tommy Wells—received publicly disclosed campaign contributions from Thompson between around 2001 and 2011.

In 2011, Loose Lips published a list of the D.C. politicos who received contributions from Thompson and donors who appeared to be affiliated with Thompson over the course of a decade. The same caveats that applied then apply now: It's possible that not every donation tallied here had something to do with Thompson; it's also possible that there are other contributions LL was unable to find.

  • At-Large Councilmember Vincent Orange: $99,700
  • Council Chairman Kwame Brown: $32,500
  • At-Large Councilmember Michael Brown: $22,750 [In February, it was reported that Thompson was believed to have provided about $100,000 in off-the-book help to Brown's 2008 campaign.]
  • At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson: $19,500
  • Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser: $18,600
  • At-Large Councilmember David Catania: $15,750
  • Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr.: $10,000
  • Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander: $9,600
  • Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry: $8,550
  • Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham: $8,000
  • Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans: $4,500
  • Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh: $1,000
  • Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells: $0
  • Former Ward 4 Councilmember/former Mayor Adrian Fenty: $100,000
  • Former Ward 7 Councilmember/former Council Chairman/Mayor Vince Gray: $90,000 (in on-the-books donations, so excluding the shadow campaign)

Can we pull some down now? At least tidy up some of the Orange pollution.

  • Signs Signs Everywhere is Signs

I bet when Orange got the $99.7k, he ran to the sign store and said: "Oh boy, can I have 10,000 signs please?"

  • tony

    @Noodlez,

    You are right on point.

Gray's campaign was only one of many high-profiled campaigns in this city and throughout this country that had interactions with Thompson.

So why is Gray's campaign the only one being "targeted"?
I guess when you can't beat the black man at the polls; you so smear his name and threaten him with jail in favor of others.

Have we not seen this movie before?

That's why it's even more unfair and wrong. But wrong nevertheless!

However, the Gray's supporters will stay Course. You played this game on us in the past but not time!

    NOT THIS TIME!

    CORRECTION:

That's why it's even more unfair and wrong. But wrong nevertheless!

However, the Gray's supporters will stay the Course. You played this game on us in the past but not this time!

    NOT THIS TIME!

@Tony from what I just saw I think that Gray may have plenty of company. You sound like a supporter but I really wish someone could show me something that Gray planned and carried out. Economic boom, no not really started under Williams, DC Police and Fire are a mess. Oh I get it new trash cans.

  • drez

DC's Renaissance can be explained by looking at national economic and city-friendly trends.
It's about managing growth, not really about creating it.

I think that it is sad that Wells is the only person who hasn't taken any money. I am not going to vote for Gray. I am not really feeling Bowser either. I just don't see her doing much in her current role. I think that out of the group, Catania has the best chance of getting stuff done.

  • noodlez

ALL THE HATIN' ASS BAMMAS GET ALL Y'ALL CHUCKLES IN NOW COME APRIL 1ST THOSE SMILES WILL BE UPSIDE DOWN LOOKING LIKE A CLOWN IN THE FACE.

BROTHER RON CAN INDICT ALL HE WANT. HE WILL NOT GET A GUILTY VERDICT FROM A DC JURY ON THIS THIN ASS CIRCUMSTANTIAL HEARSAY EVIDENCE. THUS THE DOG AND PONY SHOW TO PUT PUBLIC PRESSURE ON MAYOR GRAY.

WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY ALL THE PLEA DEALS IF THESE CASES ARE SO AIR TIGHT?

  • HUAlum71

    Question:

Why hasn't Ron Machen indicted Mayor Gray?

  • Roscoe’s Wetsuit

Noodlez, I know you don't understand much, but plea deals are common in airtight cases because (a) they are used as leverage by the prosecution to go after bigger fish, and (b) they save the government (and the guilty party) the time and expense of a lengthy trial.

Brendan Sullivan's services aren't cheap. I know Thompson was once a millionaire, but I would HATE to see his legal bills. Seven figures, easily.

@HUAlum, we don't know why Gray hasn't been indicted yet. He may be, he may not be. What's clear is that winter is coming for One City.

  • GeeGee

If its not one racket its another. Today its about illegal money. Tomorrow it should be about unconscionable votes by DC Council Members and on Thursday the voters need to look at who really sold out to developers.
RETA LEWIS has the integrity to be Mayor.

  • noodlez

YOUR LOGIC DOESN'T MAKE ANY SINCE SEE THE TRAYVON MARTIN TRIAL. THAT WAS AN AIRTIGHT CASE BUT ZIMMERMAN TOOK IT TO TRIAL.

FUCK I BELIEVE EVEN MARION BARRY TOOK HIS CASE TO TRIAL.

WHY SUCCUMB TO THE INTERVIEW ROOM WHEN YOU CAN WALK THAT SHIT TO E. BARRETT PRETTYMAN AND GET A JURY TO PROBABLY/POSSIBLY SEE THINGS YOUR WAY?

SLIM IN THE PAST THEY WERE NOT BUT KNOW THEY ARE AS COMMON AS BIKE LANES! SO IN ESSENCE ITS REALLY NOT ABOUT JUSTICE IT IS ABOUT A FEATHER IN A CAP FOR SOME PUNK ASS PROSECUTOR AND THEIR BRAGGING RIGHTS, MONEY AND TIME?

SO ALL THESE NEW BAMMAS PRESSED TO GET MAYOR GRAY OUT HIS SEAT WHEN THE ONLY PLATFORM THEY RUN ON IS A 2010 SHADOW CAMPAIGN THAT HAD NO BERING ON THE OUTCOME OF THE RACE OR HIS GOVERNANCE.

SO LET GET THIS STRAIGHT Y'ALL WANNA GO WITH:
    THE DIZZY BROAD
    THE LEGAL MONEY STEALER
    THE LIVABLE WALKABLE STUMBLER
    THE MILLIONAIRE
THE I WORKED FOR A CLINTON
    THE BALD BAMMA
    THE SIDEDOOR BOSS HOGG

OHH AND THE EVIL DASTARDLY CONNIVING REDUMBLICAN COCKSUCKER PRETENDING TO BE A NORMAL HUMAN BEING?

    WE ARE IN TROUBLE.

  • DCPeopleWhoThink

DC low, moderate and middle income residents there are only two (2) legitimate Mayoral candidates, and they are:

    A - Andy Shallal
    and
    B - Reta Lewis.

Like it or not, all of the others are technically tainted, in one way or the other from Jeff Thompson's funding which lead to his SETTLEMENT (ask the Secretary of City Council for the votes of approval).

None of the elected CMs that are campaigning have FBI clean hands -- regretful stand only therewith DC Clean Hands, as Catania (a horrific personality and dictator) who will soon run, as the Independent for the Gays of this city.

The truth has unfolded, and for Gray's supporters, remember he knew nothing about DPR taking 30 employees Out-of-Town during the federal government shut-down until the press informed him. Then, he did nothing about his long-term social friend Ellerbe (that dates/dated Lisa Mallory - who resigned from Employment Services knowing more poor leadership outcomes where forth-coming regarding her incompetence) not asking for more ambulance and personnel when he knew that was a shortage.

Followed by, Gray not knowing anything about the shadow campaign when his allegiate friends (uncontested) Tom Gore and Vernon Hawkins were heavily engaged. Then, this fool kept all of Fenty's people in leadership position, which further indicates his inability to serve as Mayor of DC.

Something is seriously wrong with constituents, when any Mayor of their city or state is absent from knowing ALL of the above, as an elected Chief Executive Official.

Please stop comparing Marion Barry w/ Vincent Gray, he never had a shadow campaign (just low life woman), and kept silence about his innocence when it came down to city services (i recall Barry asking for forgiveness and prayer).

  • http://Www.DCLibertarians2014.blogspot.com Bruce Majors, Libertarian for mayor

Mayor Gray donor and friend Jeffrey Thompson has now testified to federal investigators that Mayor Gray conspired with him to accept over half a million dollars in illegal campaign contributions without which his electoral victory seems unlikely.

This situation underscores the illegitimacy of the D.C. Government, where politicians are elected by breaking their own laws, laws they use to reduce or silence political competition. The illegitimacy of the D.C. Government extends back to at least 1994, when the D.C. political class decided to nullify the will of the people about a basic constitutive principle of our government, when 66% of voters voted in favor of a term limits initiative and the city council decided to declare it invalid.

It seems our ruling politicians will break laws and disregard referendum votes to hold onto power.

Of course, Mayor Gray is innocent until proven guilty. Perhaps Mr. Thompson is now conspiring with prosecutors in a plea bargain and is falsely implicating Mayor Gray, even though they are long time friends. What we do know is that the D.C. Budget has grown to $12 billion, and that much loot will continue to attract cronies and cause corruption . One can only imagine how much corruption there will be when the D.C. Government not only dispenses $12 billion, and decides who gets waterfront land parcels and government leases, contracts, grants, and subsidies, but when it also gets to decide who may and who may not erect a building over 12 stories. One important means to less corruption is to take money and power away from government by transferring more of the activities it has monopolized, like education, to free people in the voluntary sector.
