Mayoral Power Rankings: Week 8

Today's Mayoral Power Rankings are interactive. If Jeff Thompson is charged before the end of the day, just print this blog post out, cut out Vince Gray's entry, and paste it on to the bottom.  And check back on LL Tuesday morning, when the campaign finance reports due Monday could upend the rankings.

1. Muriel Bowser

What: Bowser got a gift from the Washington Post this week in the news that the Thompson investigation could be heating up again. Plus, she's got her face on lamp posts.

Why: This is the slimmest margin on a Power Rankings win yet. While Bowser's opponents haven't scored a major hit on her yet, her own campaign workers seem content to do that themselves, setting up fundraisers with erratic ex-NBA player Steve Francis and scandal-connected Adrian Fenty chum Sinclair Skinner.

Sincerest Form of Flattery Watch: Fake Muriel Bowser remains the most dedicated fake Twitter account of the race, with an operator so devoted to the gag that he or she is now live-tweeting Bowser's debate appearances.

Power Rankings Momentum: Rising.

2. Vince Gray

What: Incumbent Gray had a good week until the very of it, scoring endorsements or near-endorsements from the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the Latino Caucus, and the Northwest Current. Gray was set to cruise to numero uno in the Power Rankings, in fact, until Thompson got in the news again.

Why: Gray campaign manager Chuck Thies, meanwhile, claims that his campaign has a database of their potential voters that Gray's rivals can't beat. “They’re carpet-bombing," Thies says. "We have laser-guided missiles.”

Power Rankings Momentum: Rising.

 3. Jack Evans

What: One weird theory explaining Evans' candidacy—that Machen would go after Gray in the final days of the race, leaving Evans as the second best choice for the mayor's supporters—is getting closer to becoming reality. Evans' mailer barrage continues. Evans didn't get the Current endorsement, missing a chance to at least firm up his Upper Caucasia base.

Why: But is Evans too touchy to handle the heat of being a frontrunner? The campaign's conference call with reporters over Bowser's otherwise-forgotten Georgetown jab kept LL busy on Monday, but it didn't do much for Evans' candidacy.

Power Rankings Momentum: Falling.

4. Tommy Wells

What: Wells' marijuana decriminalization bill passed the D.C. Council. His strict ethics push didn't play well in front of some audiences, with Gray supporters at one shouting Wells down.

Why: Wells has managed to get on the right side of the viable candidate cut-off as debate organizers and self-appointed candidate culler Colby King try to winnow the field.

Power Rankings Momentum: Falling.

5. Andy Shallal

What: Shallal's campaign went on a late-week press release blitz, putting out poll numbers of dubious significance and a Friday demand for Gray to "come clean" about Thompson.

Why: Shallal could stand to benefit if the U.S. Attorney's office raises questions about Gray's last campaign.

Power Rankings Momentum: Stalled.

6. Vincent Orange

What: Orange picked up some more labor support this week with an endorsement from a nurses union. Besides Gray, Orange had the most enthusiastic backers at the Ward 7 debate.

Why: He continues to hitch his campaign to the country's number one song.

Power Rankings Momentum: Stalled.

7. Reta Jo Lewis

What: LL has seen some of Lewis' campaign workers. Many of them presumably know that people don't use PDAs anymore. Nevertheless, Lewis' staff have somehow let her tell audiences multiple time this week to "pull out your PDAs."

Why: It's sad to see a longtime public servant like Lewis fall into the grip of Big Palm Pilot.

Power Rankings Momentum: Falling.

why is seeing bowser's face on lamp posts a positive?

  • drez

Because seeing Gray's face on DC Gov lit is a negative, duh.
LL- you are missing a word in your first sentence about gray. That word is end. Please add it. It's really, really, needed.

  • drez

    - please no more pictures of Indigo girl bowser.

  • drez

To the contrary- Moar Muriel! Please, and...

  • HUAlum71

LL: There you go again. Is it selective amnesia or are you just plain ol stupid? What about the OTHER endorsements the Mayor received? One of them at the very same time of the one you did remember to mention.

    LL Power Rankings Momentum: PLUMMETING

  • Abominable Dr. Phibes

Those head are stale. Not tasty.

  • Wow

Chuck Thies: "They're carpet bombing. We have laser guided missiles."

That's just how I want to be looked at as a voter AND I love hearing the mayor's campaign manager admit that it's all about his political strategy and nothing to do with ideas, ability or ethics.

    Very nice.

Fuck Jeffrey Thompson, Hawkins and the rest of these corrupt motherfucking idiots.

I think this post explains the two ways this election can go:

If the Gray is not mentioned in the plea, he wins, easily. If he is, he loses, as he probably should. If he loses I hope either Jack or Tommy wins, they seem nice enough, especially Jack who has great experience and has proven to be a gentleman, far from a demagogue. Tommy is cool but it seems like consultants are turning him into a very nasty individual, he looks desperate.

No matter how much people push for Gray and reward him for all the good things he has done that MAJOR fuck up in 2010 makes all other actions and efforts look minuscule.

All the people involved with the shadow campaign are the worst kind of assholes, they ruined a lot for a lot of us. Fucking assholes.

I love the Mayor but I hate corruption more, especially in such a large scale with so much money. I really hope the Mayor had nothing to do with it.

"DC council member Muriel Bowser (Ward 4) has refused to say whether her campaign has received a federal subpoena".

    Has she received one LL?

  • drez

    ^One City, many sockpuppets.

    MAYOR GRAY 2014.

  • Saywhat

Go Muriel Bowser, you will be the next Mayor of the District of Columbia. Don't get in the bed with dogs or you will come up with fleas. Stay focus and positive, you are a breath of fresh air and I and many many others will realize this and come April 1, 2014. On April 2, 2014 after the final count, you will be thanking the Citizens of the District of Columbia for a job well done!

  • Tbonebullets

    indictment to drop in 3...2...1...

  • LOL

bowser will be the next mayor of what city....not DC and your right @councilworker take them damn pictures of her down asap. I know someone over in ward 8 that said why in the hell is her bigg a** face hanging off the side of her building...horse face is kind

  • Ward-8

All the noise about Bowser, face it she is the black version of Sarah Pallin, looks good,no record, no intellect always talking in circles and parables and saying nothing.

  • Ward 5 Resident

All the way with Muriel Bowser. She is the best choice. She has the expertise! Muriel has done a outstanding job in Ward 4. It's time for a change, Vincent Gray is a liar and should be disqualified from running. We need a mayor with integrity. Hurry up Machen nail this crook!

  • Marvin E. Adams

Did somone say I-N-T-R-G-R-I-T-Y? Just follow the money (contributions) and see who is rewarded for the same. C'mon, my fellow Washingtonians, P-L-E-A-S-E do N-O-T be bamboozled, hoodwinked, yet A-G-A-I-N! There's a very clear choice in this election; one who has ot been a part of this corrupt culture, which has permeated the political landscape of our fair city for far too long.
@ Ward 5 Resident: "...She(Bowser) is the best choice." Respectfully, are you kidding me? Bowser is N-O-T the best choice.

  • Pachamama

Bowser is yet another pig, feeding at the public trough. I wonder how much WalMart paid her for her vote against the Large Retailer Responsibility Act (LRRA), which would have required MalWart and the other big-box stores to pay their workers (most of whom are part-time) a living wage.

Then, after the mayor vetoed the LRRA, Bowser refused to vote to overturn Gray's veto.

She needs to be booted from the council altogether.

  • mona

Well looks like Gray is going down. Don't vote for Bowser, she is super lazy and talks in circles. Can't even confirm the sky is blue if asked. No choice here but to go for 3rd in line, Evans. He has no scandal that I know of. Don't care if he lives in GT cause from the looks of it his house ain't that great. Check out Shallalhs house if you want to see true wealth. As a person with a home in Ward 4 don't vote for Bowser if you were going to vote for Gray.

  • drez

Vote Muriel. She's the best choice.
