Jack Evans Accuses Muriel Bowser of Using Georgetown “Code Words”

Mayoral hopeful Jack Evans isn't ready to let rival Muriel Bowser claim the title of leading challenger to Vince Gray just yet. After Evans showed up on a quiet commercial strip in Bowser's ward last week to criticize her economic record, Bowser's D.C. Council office shot back that the "stunt" only proved that Evans didn't know about neighborhoods outside of his own Georgetown.

Evans responded to Bowser's jab today, accusing her of referencing the neighborhood where he lives with what amount to divisive "code words."

“Exactly what does Ms. Bowser imply by saying I have no knowledge of neighborhoods outside of Georgetown?" Evans asked rhetorically this afternoon.

Evans, in a conference call with reporters that was billed as bringing "substance" to the mayoral race,  went on to ask voters to "reject the Bowser approach of dividing us against ourselves." Still, Evans wouldn't say what message he thinks Bowser is trying to send with her "code words," insisting that Bowser should answer that question herself.

Bowser campaign manager Bo Shuff declined to respond to Evans' remarks since he hadn't listened to the call himself.

Evans, who spent the rest of the call talking up his own economic record in comparison with Bowser's, denied that the call was a sign of his desperation as Bowser pulls away from him in polls. Evans described the Democratic primary race as coming down to Bowser, himself, and Gray, saying that rival Tommy Wells, whom he polled almost even with in a poll released last week, doesn't have the campaign resources to win.

Evans' attempt to respond to Bowser did earn one response. Responding to tweets about the conference call, Wells campaign manager Chebon Marshall disputed Evans' characterization of the race.

"If I had spent twice as much as my opponent and were still tied, I think I would be more careful making such insults," Marshall writes in an email to LL.

This is what desperation looks like.

  • realdc

Are we not speaking English here? Sounds like she means that you only come outside Georgetown at mayoral election time to pull stunts in Ward 4. Jack Evans could even beat me for dog catcher -- and I dont have a dog!!

  • Watch Out

Brace yourself for the desperation coming from the Bowser Green Team very soon… Just you wait...

  • Miss Lu Lu Hog

Both are idiots and they disgust me.

  • DC Resident

Evans does not understand Kennedy St. I am a resident of the Kennedy St area and we do not want Kennedy St to be another 14th St or U St. That brings noise, additional trash, parking issues and rats from businesses. Kennedy St is in the process of getting an upgraded streetscape along with the reconfiguration of the intersection of Kennedy St and Missouri Ave. Those funds where due to CM Bowser efforts not Evans or Grey. I do not trust Evans, he will say anything to become Mayor. It is his life long dream to be Mayor of DC.

  • Dean of DC

Evans is not trying to make Kennedy St. identical to 14th street. He doesn't always articulate this as well as he should.. However, he has the experience to run a government. Muriel does not. She will probably bankrupt our city, and in the process, will not create jobs for residents East of the River.

So in Jack's world, it's OK for a white man to grandstand in a black woman's ward, but it's not OK for that black woman to fire back at that white man -- the white guy who chooses to leave the black man mayor alone. White guy Thies must be loving it. Remember his emails comparing the same black woman to Rush Limbaugh?

  • The Scoreboard

The polls show that Bowser is in the only candidate competitive across geographic, racial, and political lines. That said, implying that she is the candidate trying to "divide" her way to victory is simply asinine.

  • T. Watkins

Leave my boo alone. She means Evans is a white man that only cares about Georgetown.

  • tom m

jack Evans is history. there was a time when he might have had a shot. butnow he is out of touch --except with the people who make money crom.gentrification. drop out jack. you will look.foolish when the vote is.tallied....

Give Evans credit: Georgetown" has been used as a code word in DC; and Bowser has a pattern of pitting one neighborhood against another. Although diminishing in recent years due to changing demographics, ask any long term District resident, "Georgetown" has a history of being a racial code word referencing white neighborhoods and residents specially "west of the park" (another diminishing code word - even Milloy has transitioned from ranting against blue-haired Georgetown women to those myopic little twits). That a native Wahingtonian mayoral candidate is perpetuating this divisive language is disturbing. In addition, Bowser has demonstrated a willingness to pit one neighborhood against another for political advantage evidenced: pitting Georgetown against Kennedy Street; by her attempt to divert capital dollars from the Navy Yard to her home Ward; and criticizing the use of public funds to create NoMa parks at the Ward 8 dems candidate forum; and So much for all 8 Wards!

  • Northwesterneer

Scoreboard, you are fooling yourself, in NW most of my friends are still supporting Andy Shallal (really, his signs are all over up here) and couldn't pick Bowser out of a police line-up. The idea that she's polling well in NW is a joke, I talk to people about who they're voting for and they say they wish Fenty would run again. Bowser is a non-starter.

And Kennedy St guy, Kennedy st is a horrible place right now. It's a cycle of low expectations.

  • SEis4ME

Georgetown is to white what Anacostia is to black.

After all, not being able to understand the needs of folks other than wealthy and white is what it implies.

  • ID T. Watkins- Please

    T. Watkins- please explain who you and your boo are. We're confused. Let's not speak in code words anymore.

PS. How was that trip to LV for the shopping center convention? Is the the boo you're talking about? Remember what happens in LV doesn't always stay in LV.

  • John

Evans doesn't have a chance and should give up the race for mayor and give his votes to Muriel. Get in touch with reality.

  • YD2

It's not so easy being a "front runner" isn't it Muriel. She's starting to crack and people are seeing her for who she really is. First Andy being a "rich socialist" and now Evans Mr. "Georgetown." She knows exactly what she's doing and it isn't pretty.

Most people who have worked closely with her or have interacted with her in DC govt. say the same thing -- she's condescending and not smart.

  • noodlez

YO DC RESIDENT KENNEDY STREET IS ALREADY THERE WITH NOISE, RATS AND TRASH. THUS THE CLEAN UP CREW AND THE DRUG BOYS!

THIS IS TYPICAL COMING FROM THE "THE SHANNY'S" OF DC POLITRICKS WHICH IS THE MURIEL BOWSER CAMPAIGN. THE IGNORANCE THEY DISPLAY BY OVER AND UNDER UTILIZING MURIEL BOWSER THROUGHOUT HER YEAR LONG QUEST. LEST NOT FORGET WITH ALL THE MONEY, TIME SHE HAS BEEN ON CAMPAIGN TRAIL AND "2010 CAMPAIGN" MEME SHE IS STILL LOSING!

SHE CONTINUES TO PUNCH DOWN BECAUSE SHE CAN'T PUNCH UP!
MAYOR GRAY IS CLOCKING 30% IN LATEST POLL WHICH DOESN'T ACCOUNT FOR THE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT HE WILL RECEIVE FROM THE BLACK COMMUNITY.

BOWSY IS GOING TO NEED THAT G'TOWN VOTE TO BREAK THE 25% MARK COME APRIL 1 BUT IN TRUE FORM THE CRACK CAMPAIGN STAFF CONTINUES TO ENCOURAGE AND NOT INFORM HER THAT MAKING DISPARAGING REMARKS ABOUT AN AREA/NEIGHBORHOOD OF THIS CITY WILL NOT GARNER VOTES.

PEOPLE THESE ARE THE FOLK WHO WANT TO OPERATE, RUN AND GOVERN THIS CITY. PAY ATTENTION!

    ONE CITY.

  • Pachamama

Let's not forget that Bowser voted against the Large Retailer Responsibility Act (LRRA), which would have forced WalMart to pay it's workers a minimum wage of $12.50/hour -- hardly a hardship for one of the wealthiest corporate families in the world.

The LRRA was passed despite the opposition of council members who have no empathy for low-wage workers, but it was vetoed by Mayor Gray. Then Bowser, of course refused to vote in favor of overturning Gray's veto.

Bowser obviously feels no responsibility to, or compassion for, DC's working poor, and she must not be elected mayor.

Unfortunately, as a resident of Ward 4, she's my council rep. I wouldn't vote for her for dog catcher.

I wonder how much MalWart paid the council members who voted down the LRRA.

  • Son of Washington

    Pachamama

You are an idiot. You feel that a vote to force a company to leave our city and take 6 stores with them is goid for low income residents. Further if it was so goid for Wal-Mart why did the UFCW local 400 who created the bill make sure they excluded alk of the workers at Safeway and Giant who they represent? By the way they also donr make that much and tge union has never pushed for a contract that high for them. I guess uts ok though because they afe the union. You are a joke. The LRAA was completely flawed and was a last ditch effort by UFCW to try to force Wal-Mart to unionize. Yry that on someone who doesnt actually pay attention.

    Northweaterneer

You are stupid. That Rich Socialist Andy "Im only liberal when no one is looking" Shallal. I dont know who your 15 so called friends are in NW but I live up town and I dont know a soul who supports him. As for his illegal signs, they are all on poles anf in the medians. They arent in yards and more importantly signs dont vote.

    Teamtango

Maybe you should learn the city. West of the park actually refers to upper NW mainly wards 3 and 4 not Georgetown. Much of which would actually be southwest of the park. Nice try but maybe you should get to know the city.

As for the rest of you folks spreading a racial filth. NOMA is majority white. Georgetown actually was the original black neighborhood in DC. It is still the home of some of the oldest black churches in the city.

  • Corky

Well, he does represent Georgetown, so what's the big to do? It is not a code word, it is reality. And no one personifies gentrification and wealthy business more than Jack Evans. If that's what you have been doing the entire time you have been on the Council, why would you object to anyone calling you out for it? By the way, got any tickets for the Nationals opening day?

  • drez

Why is Evans focusing his fire on Bowser and not Gray?
Because he iis playing the spoiler- he's not at all a serious contender for the top spot.

  • lolers

Bowser has a nice office in Anacostia, but I have never seen her there. No one bothered to clean the sidewalk in front of her MLK office snowstorm before this last one in fact. I have a picture of the impassable walkway next to a six foot banner of her grinning mug if anyone wants to buy it off me lol. Havent even instagrammed it yet

All of a sudden Shalla wants a Busboys and Poets in Anacostia after rejecting us and it does reek of opportunism. Win or lose hope he follows tgrough and that one might change my opinion of him

Anyway Bowser doesnt strike me as someone who cares too much about EOR so Im not sure why she is playing the Georgetown card. At this point Im more inclined to vote Grey and go with the Devil I know.

  • PR

    YD

You state that Muriel is condescending and not smart.......sounds like Fenty?

  • Saywhat

Jack you are the same person who quoted that there were too many blacks in Govt. Please take a long walk off of a short pier.

  • justsayin

Not an Evans fan, but Bowser doesn't do $hit for her constituents on the east side of Georgia Avenue.

We are more alike than different, said the pot to the kettle.

  • SEis4ME

    SonofWash,

It is Bowser who has now touted herself as the EOTR champion. If she were a better servant than Gray, then why wouldn't she distinguish herself from him? Well, I actually know why. It's because she would do nothing Gray, Fenty, or Williams haven't done. She will NOT be a reckoning force EOTR as her campaign suggests. Sadly, no one is interested in calling her on it.

Corky, it's not a big deal. But what it does show is how whites are sometimes at a disadvantage in pulling the shock and awe card. I'm sure we both can agree that if Evans suggested Bowser didn't know about n'hoods outside of Anacostia, she could easily accuse him of playing the race card. Do you think Evans would be able to campaign on the notion he "walks, talks, like you" (think Vincent Orange) to G'town voters w/o having to retract it?

Everyone knows what Georgetown implies just as with the word Anacostia. Why is only one "offensive."

  • LOL

Hey Jack just tell her she doesn't even know her own neighborhood...let alone ward 4

  • Brians.Ions

Consider this…. the main target in this noble battle is a fine example of a 'shadow campaigner' with corrupt/incompetent police and fire chiefs. That's our dubious life and death/ public safety base line.

Bowser and Evans seem to be promising more of the same-- just less embarrassing and more 'ethical'. Uh huh.

But Georgetown v. Smells Like Teen Spirit? This is very much a race to the bottom. Is it too late to draft Ron Machen?

  • NW DC Resident

ALL: For the life of me, how is it that the state of our Fire andEmergency Services not at the TOP of everyone's agenda? Where is the outrage? I would be terrified to call 911 in this city. what could be more urgent than this issue? Where do the candidates stand on this???
