Evans Bashes Bowser’s Record In Front of Vacant Ward 4 Businesses

photo (42)

Eight points ahead of closest opponent Muriel BowserVince Gray looks like the biggest obstacle in the way of the seven other candidates looking to replace him. But mayoral hopeful and Ward 2 councilmember Jack Evans took aim at second place this afternoon instead, holding a press conference on a stretch of closed businesses in Bowser's own Ward 4.

Evans' campaign selected a stretch of Brightwood Park's Kennedy Street NW as the weak spot in Bowser's economic record. Rick DuBose, a resident of the area, kicked off the event by accusing Bowser and former mayor Adrian Fenty of botching a revitalization plan for the corridor. Why, DuBose wondered, was Kennedy Street still filled with closed businesses, while the commercial strips in Columbia Heights had flourished?

Evans had similarly hard words for Bowser, saying the area's empty storefronts were due to a "failure of representation." If Evans becomes mayor, he promised that he'd repeat a Shaw or 14th Street-style boom in the corridor.

"Other candidates may talk about vision, but look around," Evans said, gesturing to a shuttered salon on his left and a liquor store on his right.

Evans' event drew two Bowser supporters, including former At-Large D.C. Council candidate Josh Lopez, who said he couldn't resist coming out to see a rare visit from Evans to the area. "He's throwing shots," Lopez said. "More has happened under Muriel Bowser than ever before."

Bowser's campaign referred LL's questions about Evans to her D.C. Council office, which LL's waiting to hear back from.

(Update, 4 p.m.: In an emailed statement from her office, Bowser paints Evans as, well, a Georgetowner. "Today's election year stunt underscores Mr. Evans's lack of knowledge about neighborhoods outside of Georgetown," Bowser says. "But, we welcome Jack's newfound interest in Ward 4 and look forward to working with him.")

Gray's campaign may want to spruce up commercial strips in Ward 7, too. While Evans looks to be gunning for second now, he lumped Gray in with Bowser in his remarks, wondering why after nine years in office Gray's home ward has few sit-down restaurants or a movie theater.

As for why Evans was in Bowser territory instead of Gray's ward, Evans urged patience. "We'll get there," Evans said.

This is so true and accurate. Bowser only responds to squeaky wheel and this street shows what she hasn't been doing the whole time she has been the ward 4 councilperson. Don't vote for her or Gray your not doing anything but sticking to the old DC problems we have always had.

  • DDiesel

Is Evans on Gray's campaign now?

  • Burd

There are plenty of empty store fronts in Evans' own Ward 2...I passed several today.

  • drez

Evans is not honest when he equates Shaw to Brightwood. The two are completely different markets. He knows it and so do the good people of Shaw and Brightwood.
But even if one is willing to take his ridiculous comparison at face value and vote for him, what would be the point? To wait around 15-20 years like Shaw did while Evans represented it as the Ward 2 Councilmember only to have him jettison it for a richer neighborhood?
    What a tool.

  • justsayin

Lopez said. "More has happened under Muriel Bowser than ever before."

    BAWAHAHWAHHAA!!

  • truth hurts

Jack's gray's lackey. Can't win, and he knows it.

  • DGG4

It is increasingly clear that the WCP, like the Post, want to make this a two person race for Mayor. They've only handled Muriel with kid gloves. When are real journalists going to look at her track record and be honest? When?

I'm voting for Mayor Gray! In spite of all the obstacles he has had to deal with in the last 2-3 years, DC is doing as well as when Mayor Williams lead this city. Is Gray perfect -- no, not at all -- but this city is doing well, crime is own, education is improving, people and families are moving into the city.

Truth to tell, with all the "eyes" looking at him, I trust Mayor Gray at the helm for another 4 years than someone new.

  • tth

And Josh Lopez just wants a job! You know you're pathetic when Fenty, your own frat brother, wouldn't endorse you or campaign on your behalf when you ran, Josh.

  • Shawstress

Excellent! Finally Jack does theater. Did someone finally realize there is more to communications then a poseur in a suit?

Jack should be able to score points tonight at the Stein Club endorsement meeting. Someone is going to nail Browser down on who she really is and if she is not candid and credible it goes to character and she is toast. For a closeted lesbian to be seeking the Mayor's office in DC in 2014 is unacceptable.

You better believe Chuck Thies is not going to let this pass. I wouldn't be surprised if Browser is a no show. Either way she is a loser.

  • 202

    Shade Shawstress! LOL
Bowser and D. Kamila Anderson.. LOL

  • falloutboy

Josh Lopez is an empty suit, bro. A nice suit, I'll give you that, but an empty one. He will forever be the "former candidate."

Muriel has failed us in Ward 4 for years. Just look around: liquor stores, used car lots, take out joints. Nothing else.

Where is the vision? The drive? The ability to get things done.

It is a sad day when our status quo Mayor looks like the likely winner.

  • Kevin

I live in Ward 4 and Kennedy won't happen over night. Muriel has done a great job making and keeping Kennedy clean and safe. When she took office it was in shambles. Its a long way from perfect, but it has come a LONG way................ Muriel For Mayor. Jack Evans has never even been to ward 4!!!

  • Tight Lips

Evans MBA from UPenn >>>>> Bowser & Gray combined.

  • Miss Tensdale

Josh Lopez is a parasite. He reminds me of the short guy on Spartacus. LOL

  • WARD4NDC

Miss Tensdale do you mean Josh Lopez played the character Tiberius in Spartacus War of the Damn on Starz?

  • noodlez

DREZ 1ST AND KENNEDY IS PETWORTH NOT BRIGHTWOOD.

KENNEDY STREET FROM N. CAPITOL TO GEO AVE CONTINUES TO BE NEGLECTED 1ST BY FENTY NOW BY BOWSER. IN FACT THE ONLY REDEVELOPMENT(IF U WANNA CALL IT THAT) IS THE HATTIE HOLMES CENTER (THE OLD KENNEDY THEATER) WHICH FENTY DRAGGED HIS ASS ON TO GET RENOVATED.

@KEVIN-MURIEL KEEPING IT CLEAN AND SAFE??? WHEN DID SHE START DOING THAT?? THE HARD WORKING STREET SWEEPERS DO KEEP IT CLEAN BUT I BELIEVE THAT PROGRAM WAS STARTED UNDER MAYOR WILLIAMS.

CHECK HER RUN SHEETS AND SEE WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME SHE EVEN BEEN ON KENNEDY STREET?

  • Veazey R. Quackenbos

Far be it for me to defend Bowser (or Fenty), but we really need to get off this idea that the councilmembers are ward bosses who can single-handedly raise or lower the fortunes of their neighborhoods.

The depressed state of Ward 4 commercial districts has been a campaign issue around the necks of councilmembers there since Charlene Drew Jarvis was in office. In fact, Adrian used the issue successfully to beat here in the first place.

Comparing Kennedy Street to commercial districts in Columbia Heights or Shaw is idiotic. The latter two 'hoods have Metro access and residential density. Kennedy Street is nowhere near Metro and can only be so prosperous in a low-density environment.

  • Jim Ed

I'm not voting for him, but good for Jack to stick it to Muriel. EVERYBODY wants to see Kennedy St thrive, and Muriel has done absolutely nothing to help it. Where's the earmarked grant money, or great street initiative? Where's Muriel even mugging for a photo-op while grabbing tacos at TDF or breakfast at Tony's? Why hasn't she met with the new Kennedy St citizens group yet? Why do I live 2 blocks from Kennedy and have never once gotten information from her office about what I can do to help?

Tommy Wells may be a drunken panderer, but at least he's out in ward 6 at the restaurants and bars holding court. Muriel I guess is cooped up in the blighted, unwelcoming campaign HQ on Georgia Ave.

  • drez

Agree, TH. Jack staying in earns him 3rd or more likely 4th in the Mayor's race, and his constituents another 4 years with a funny-money fraud slow-roll fraud as Mayor.

  • drez

noodlez According to the OP plan here: http://planning.dc.gov/DC/Planning/In+Your+Neighborhood/Wards/Ward+4/Kennedy+Street+Corridor+Revitalization+Plan++Fact+Sheet
It's Brightwood and North Manor Park.
Seems mostly like Brightwood to me, but what do I know. Petworth gets bigger every day.

  • Sammy

Stein will never endorse Muriel, especially since she hides her own gay relationship with Tamara Watkins an Amgen exec. They started dating in college. Stein would be hypocritical if they endorse her.

  • Ivy

Martin Moulton aka "drez" blogger is a crazy Shaw resident that has an infinity with telling lies. He was begging Jack Evans for a job because his crazy Dartmouth ass can't hold a job. Do you have anything good to say about people?

  • HUAlum71

Ah, drez, and just who would be that 'funny-money fraud slow-roll fraud Mayor'?

    Just askin'.

  • noodlez

I STAND CORRECTED!! DIDN'T KNOW MISSOURI AV WAS PETWORTH BOUNDARY LINE.

    IM OFF BY 1 BLOCK.

  • SickofSammy

Sammy - you cant bring Bowser down with your lying allegations. Your dirty politics and homophobic rants wont change a single person's mind. DC voters are progressive and dont care about politicians personal lives - especially when folks like you feel a need to make them up.

  • Defending Sammy

Sick of Sammy: I am gay that is why it is so infuriating to see her hide this way. She sets a bad example and dishonors all those who struggle with this. Big surprises for her at Stein next week. The devil or pudding is in the details. All will be revealed.

You can take my word for it.

  • Tiberius

Hi my name is Tiberius and I played a character on "Spartacus: War of the Damned". Some say, I look like Joshua Lopez. Joshua worked for both Adrian Fenty and Muriel Bowser campaigns. I wonder, do this guy have a real job and did he graduate from UDC?

  • Tiberius

There's no proof Miss Bowser is a lesbian and if it were, who cares? People need to stop assuming everyone is gay or lesbian because not everyone is attracted to the same sex. I've heard ugly rumors for years about gay Hollywood actors like John Travolta and Tome Cruise is gay. These are rumors and lies. I don't care about who Miss Bowser sleeps with Sammy. Bowser would is a lousy legislator and she hasn't serve all the Ward 4 voters, only a select few. And they are the ones that kiss her behind and agreed with everything she says or do.

  • TOAD

    Sammy

We know who you are, one more Orange staffer playing dirty tricks, that is what the does best. VO and you should be embarrassed for trying to impute that Muriel is gay. As if that was even an issue for voters.

What about your truths VO, still in the pocket of Choi Bros? Ny ave developers?

Bowser cannot and should not be a one person show when it comes to the redevelopment of any section of Ward 4 including Kennedy Street. The business community and residents have to assist as well. And they are now via the newly formed Kennedy Street Business and Development Association. This association has been featured in the neighborhood blogs, New Brightwoodian, Prince of Petworth and Greater Greater Washington in recent weeks and I can assure you we were not contacted to attend this publicity stunt or speak to the work we have done to garner support from the residents, current and prospective business regarding revitalization of this great street.

You all have the right to take cheap shots at Muriel for keeping her private life private and at Joshua Lopez for his belief, which is mine, that Councilmember Bowser is the best candidate to lead this city. However let's call Evans' antics what it is...A staged political event to take focus of the fact that he has nothing else to speak about. He has no vision for the city and basically seems to be a flunky of the Gray campaign.

Revitalization of any street be it Kennedy Street l, Georgia Avenue, etc takes years. It won't happen overnight or in 4 years. There has been progress. The streets are cleaner and safer. We have new business such as Culture Coffee moving in and taking root. But let's remember the majority of the residents polled thus far by the KSBDA don't want a Shaw/U Street vibe in our area. We want family friendly establishments which are reasonably priced that we can frequent on a daily or weekly basis. We don't want out already high priced homes to sky rocket further.

  • John

Why doesn't Evans run for Chairman of the Council? Oh that is a full time job and he would have to give up his day job. Wish he would run for Chairman and give up these failed runs for Mayor.

  • Tiffani N Johnson

Evans is a washed up car salesman. Trying to sell snake oil to us. Wolf of Wall Street in dc.

  • Cruisin’

@Tiffany N Johnson and Tiberius and Toad...

"It's not the lie, it's the cover up"

It's not that Browser is gay, it's she is hiding it. In a city in which 30% of the electorate is self identified as being LGBT and which happens to be the capital city of the nation someone running for Mayor while remaining in the closet is an issue. The mayor of Houston is an openly gay woman who has been elected three times as an openly gay woman. It's 2014.

FYI Tiberius. ..Cruise and Travolta are gay! Sorry to burst your bubble.

  • Tiberius Part Deux

It is a cover up. Tamara Watkins deserves better. Ask her if she is enjoying Chicago. Misses Muriel.

  • Tbonebullets

I don't understand all this talk about gays and some lady named Watkins. DC is the most gay place in the USA. Why y'all Gray people hung up gay this, gay that. Why is gay even a talking point.

  • Tiberius Part Deux

Nobody cares if Muriel is gay, people may care she is not proud and remains ashamed of accepting who she truly is. Bad example for young people struggling, it's not the gay, it is hiding it. Cover up.

  • Tbonebullets

So, Tiberius, do you think it should be an issue in this campaign whether or not Bowser is gay? Should a reporter, or anyone, ask her on a live mic whether she is a closeted gay person? Or will it remain the hot topic of discussion on internet boards and chatrooms? Because on this board, that's clearly a big concern among Gray supporters concering Muriel's qualifications to be Mayor.

  • Tiberius Part Deux

Wrong Vincent, I am VO all the way. He is the best choice. She should come out.

  • lol

Josh Lopez is right more has happened under Bowser than ever before...
    MORE CRIME
MORE SCHOOLS ALLOWED TO BE CLOSED
MORE OTHER SCHOOLS GETTING NEW BUILDINGS WHILE WARD 4 TWO HIGH SCHOOLS WERE PUSHED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST
MORE PEOPLE BEING IGNORED WHO ARE RESIDENTS
MORE TRASH NOT BEING PICKED UP BECAUSE BOWSER HASN'T MADE SURE OR CARED
MORE UMEMPLOYED RESIDENTS AND WITH THE TURN-OVER IN HER OFFICE SHE COULD HAVE HIRED SOME BUT DIDN'T
MORE LIES...I could keep going but you understand what we in ward 4 are already tired of and we would never subject the entire city to her control....NEVER

  • stick2yourguns

Josh another promised high paying job goes to him from bowser for his support, check the office of campaign finance he is already getting 3k per week from her campaign.

  • stick2yourguns

I must say the ANC Commissioners in ward 4 have done all the work they can because Bowser sure hasn't well that is until she needs them.

    Washington Post -- July 12,2013

He met privately with Vincent Gray in spring 2010, through the auspices of Jeanne Clarke Harris. She and Thompson had been business associates and friends from their days a decade earlier working on the Chartered deal. Gray was on her shortlist of birthday party guests each year.

Gray, an affable D.C. Council chairman nearly 30 years older than Fenty, was seemingly the antithesis of the mayor, whose hard-charging, somewhat cold style alienated many constituents, especially African Americans. As he had with so many other politicians, Thompson laid on the charm.

The two men met at Harris’s Massachusetts Avenue apartment, according to a close friend of Thompson’s and a second person with knowledge of the investigation — both requested anonymity because of the ongoing case. Mark Long, who is Harris’s godson and worked as Gray’s driver during the campaign, waited in another room, both people said. Long did not return calls for comment.

At some point, Harris excused herself and left the men alone, and they had a one-on-one conversation, according to a person close to Gray who requested anonymity to speak freely.

At the meeting, Thompson promised to give Gray’s campaign financial support, according to Thompson’s friend. But Thompson told Gray that he did not want to support him publicly, the friend of Thompson said.

“It was supposed to be a loan,” the friend said. “He was trying to hide from Fenty. He was hedging his bets.”

The friend said the loan was supposed to be reported after the election.

Harris would later allude to Thompson’s motivation during a court hearing: “He did not want the sitting mayor to find out he was supporting his opponent. If somehow the sitting mayor won, he would be in some serious contractual problems.”

Mark Long works for Vince Orange. It's a club, folks, and you're not in it.

@Tbonebullets; no a person sexuality shouldn't be a part of a campaign, unless they decide differently.

As they say on "Spartacus: War of the Damned", kill them all. LOL

@Cruisin; do you have proof John Travolta and Tom Cruise is gay? Have you seen them having sex in bed with another man? Stop all the gay and lesbian rumors about people. Some say Queen Latifah is a lesbian. However, I've never seen her in bed with another woman and nor to I care about who she, John Travolta, and Tom Cruise sleep with. Please give it a rest 'trolls'.

  • DCPeopleWhoThink

As a native and former Shaw resident, know that Jack Evans paid Cherita Whiting to represent him in Ward 4. Check out the Office of Campaign Finance to see how much funding he has already paid this interesting middle aged female.

Anybody who priorities hiring a person of this caliber, who past still lingers w/i, indicates how low Jack Evans will go to defeat Bowser.

It is with knowledge that Jack Evans use to personally date Alec Padro, but he has been married twice. So, what does that say about his personal and private engagements.

For this Caucasian to address how Ward 4 will be like Shaw truly will serve to commit gentrification and ruin family lives that exist in the community.

Ask Shaw residents about their supprot for Evans, when he has failed to represent the low and moderate income communities, and during restructuring made it clear how Convention Center and Carnegie Library would remain under his purview.

The only few people in Shaw this white clown can garner support (not voting for him as Mayor) are Leroy Thrope ( who he helped to get out DC jail years ago), Lyndia Goring, Mumim, and Padro -- just to name a few.

Gibson Plaza and Immaculate Conception residents refuse to support this racist, when he made it clear how he only wanted Convention Center and Carnegie Library. So, let those two facilities support his unfit behind.

He is unable to provide reverse psychology to the Blacks that reside in the Shaw, who see him only when the spotlight hits the community (shootings -- Council elections --- Mayoral elections). Because the demographics have changed he values Dupont, Logan, Georgetown residents over the Shaw low and moderate citizens.

Short and simply, he will do anything to win, and a person of this character is simply untrust-worthy as equivalent to Gray, which must require via our VOTES how both must find employment outside of the Mayor's office.

...
