Vince Gray: I’m One of You

Mayor Vince Gray: he's just like you. That's the message of the Gray campaign's new video, "One of Our Own," where Gray talks about his upbringing in the District and promises, in language similar to several of his rivals, that people who have been here during the bad times can stay here during the good times.

“Here’s a hometown kid," says Gray campaign manager Chuck Thies. "I guess the allegory is 'The Prodigal Son'."

With the video touting his roots in the District, the new ad appears to appeal to people who consider themselves "native Washingtonians." But that's not so, says Thies. The "our own" in the video's title is coming from any District resident, according to Thies—as long as they're registered to vote.

"The voice is everyone, unless you’re one of the people who lives here and doesn’t vote here and hasn’t made this your residence," Thies says. "Then he isn’t one of your own."

Gray's camp isn't the only one turning out the videos. Following Danny Glover's visit last weekend to an Andy Shallal phone bank, Shallal's campaign put out video of Glover endorsing the restaurateur. Vincent Orange's campaign released a video today with footage from his January campaign kick-off, which DCist has already mined for its GIF potential.

    Nice video.
Obviously trying to appeal to his base with the "One of Our Own" crap.

    Nice try.

    Bowser in 2014!!!!!!!
She's one of us too, Vince.
But she's not a crook. That's why we're voting for her.

  • DCShadyBoots

    @GoldCoast "we?" are you French.

I appreciate the trajectory that the city is on and Gray, in no small way, is the reason that this progress continues. First as Councilman, then Council Chair and now Mayor he has been at a place to help make the decision to produce the fruit of our labor today. I can't recall any meaningful legislation that Bowser has ever introduced and passed. Not one bill.

  • Concerned Citizen

You are not like me Mr. Gray you are deceitful and a snake. I’m offended by your statement.

We are trying to change that direction that took generation of systemic, covert as well as overt racism to stem. We are not singing that story any longer but neither am I willing to allow my children, grandchildren, neighbors or the youth that I serve to be mis-directed. We are raising young men and women of color to be international scholars; these scholars don't speak with broken English, nor do they wear their pants down to their knees. Again, if we are looking for role models let's keep it real. A role model is not "perfect" he or she is human and trying their best to do what they feel is right. Mayor Gray has a lifetime of achievement that cannot be marred or discounted, I stand by Mayor Gray. If we are looking for a candiddate to follow who cares and shows they care by their actions then youth would have no recourse than to vote for the man who "by his example" has always strived to be an example to his youth peers from Dunbar High School(college at 16 is not easy task be you white or black); entering a life of civic service to shut down the District-run Forest Haven mental institution that treated the handicapped as sub-human; ran Covenant House to secure safe, placement for homeless teens, and as Councilmember for Ward 7 and Chairman of the City Council fought and continues to fight as Mayor for a quality education for all DC children starting with the Pre-K3, Pre-K4 program. East of the River is changing for the better, we are building bridges in economic development that will stand for years for both my children and grandchildren and we have Mayor Gray to thank. Again, we are not looking for perfection we are looking for someone who wants to see the poorest of us succeed. Mayor Gray is that man for Me, My Children, My Neighbors and My Ward.

@Gold Coast: No, Bowser is not "one of us", but an elitist airhead who caters to a select constituency. More to the point of the article, anybody running in this race is fist-bumping and gumming it up with citizens in all quadrants of the city.

  • dan

Mayor Gray all the way. 4 more years

  • drez

    Grays a crook.

  • Typical DC BS

It's just a matter of time till Gray is indicted. Would LOVE to see it happen just after he gets re-elected - just another repudiation to the crooked Democratic machine that runs DC.

  • Ward 2

Once again Jack gets dissed by CP! No mention of Jack's WP video today. Jack opening his multi-million dollar Georgetown crib. Priceless!

Next up is Jack's behind the scenes, "members only" view of life from the Chevy Chase Country Club, an education video featuring his daughters
filmed at Cathedral, and an op-ed from Mrs Jack as to the how and why of her inspiration and role model being Camilla Parker-Bowles.

    Its all jolly good!

  • GoldCoastKid

@ DCShadyBoots. Your comment makes no sense. The word we're is short for we are, as in we are voting for Bowser. Not that crook Vince Gray. He needs to be put in jail.

  • http://Citypaper Ward:4 resident

We all know Gray is going to WIN.goooooo Vince Gray.

  • Ward 4

Bowser has been in the council for more that 6 years. WHat have she done for the city NOTHING........More things have been done for ANITA BONDS who has been in office for less than 2 years.

Gray has done a lot for this city, and he deserves for more years.

People talking about crooks, dishonesty, bla bla bla.....Then you should asked why TIM CLARK and DELANO HUNTER are in her campaigning staff. Are they the most honest people?????? then she is a crook too

  • Everyman

    @GoldCoastKid...

Browser may or may not be a "crook" but she is still without integrity in that she is not being honest about who she really is. She is also grossly underqualified. Since you probably see her could you please get someone to suggest to her that she remove her makeup and wash her face instead of just putting new makeup over old. The dirty makeup and greasy, dirty hair just aren't ready for primetime.

To DCBoots..Gray had zero, zilch, nada to do with the renaissance of DC. He was an obscure bureaucrat worlds away from that stage. None of this bunch except Jack had anything to do with that.

  • Northwesterner

Can anyone name one single thing that Vincent Gray has done as mayor that Fenty didn't build for him? I cannot name one single thing. I mean Gray has had Michelle Rhee's assistant Kaya Henderson implementing the Fenty/Rhee plan for 4 years now in DCPS. Cathy Lanier is still solidly implementing the Fenty plan for MPD. Is there anything Gray has done that wasn't Fenty's plan? No. Really didn't have a single idea on his own.

  • Northwesterner

Seriously, Gray supporters, just name one project that Gray started, just name one

  • Northwesterner

Oh and Muriel Bowser? Never heard of her before this election. Never heard of her. Never. No name recognition. Not interested in finding out about her.

  • S.E.

"It's just a matter of time till Gray is indicted".

Been hearing this for the past FOUR years………again, either SHIT OR GET OFF THE POT!!!!!

  • DCShadyBoots

It is incredibly naive to suggest that a sitting council person who was then elected to chair the council and later go on to become mayor had "nada to do with the renaissance of DC" no matter what your personal feelings about the Mayor are. I am of the opinion that Mayor Anthony Williams was fundamentally the architect of that renaissance, but he had to have the cooperation of a rambunctious and ego maniacal Council to get to get it done. A council that Vincent Gray chaired. Jack Evans, well, I just don't trust the man. I'll leave that there.

@Gold coast, I know what "we're" is short for. It is the "we" that is presumptuous of you. You missed the sarcasm. You are in no position to propose who is voting for who.

  • DCShadyBoots

    Amen S.E.
