Michael Brown Took $100K+ In Off-the-Books Help for 2008 At-Large Run

Disgraced former At-Large Councilmember Michael Brown has admitting receiving more illicit help from an individual resembling businessman Jeff Thompson in his 2008 run for office, according to new court filings.

Brown already admitted receiving off-the-books money from the unnamed businessman in an unsuccessful 2007 Ward 4 run after he was caught in an FBI bribery sting last June. But the new finance violations, discovered by investigators after he pleaded guilty last year, could add another six months onto his sentence, bringing it to 43 months in prison.

In October 2008, Brown's at-large campaign against Democrat Kwame Brown, Republican Pat Mara, and a write-in bid by incumbent Republican Councilmember Carol Schwartz was bouncing checks. He went to the businessman and asked for help, with the businessman—described in court documents as Co-Conspirator 1—deciding to do it surreptitiously because of what are described in the new statement of offense "the contemporaneous political dynamics."

After the meeting, Brown met with Thompson associate Jeanne Clarke Harris, who pleaded guilty in 2012 to her role in the shadow campaign for Vince Gray. Brown gave Harris a list of expenses, according to the new court papers.

Harris, acting on behalf of Co-Conspirator 1, went on to send a vendor $35,000 through her company to help Brown. A day before the election, Harris gave Brown a check worth $44,150, which he then broke up into $39,850 in cash and a $4,300 cashier's check. Brown gave the money to a consultant to increase voter turnout, according to the statement of offense. The businessman spent more than $100,000 on Brown's successful election campaign, according to the new filing.

Thompson's attorney, Brendan Sullivan, couldn't immediately be reached for comment on the new filing.

More feloniousness. Only a fool would think this stuff was isolated to Brown. It sucks this City is such a miserable failure when it comes to Ethics.

  • drez

Well, we know gray did it to...

  • truth hurts

The US ATTY has evidence showing Gray also met privately with Thompson/Harris to discuss Thompson funding Gray's campaign. Gray's (shadow) campaign also received an infusion of Thompson's illegal money shortly after the meeting. In Gray's case, however, Gray didn't want his fingerprints on the dough, so Hawkins (Gray's longtime trusted cohort) became his middle man.

Anybody still wondering why Gray won't answer questions about that meeting?

  • drez

So this is a roadmap of things to come with Gray.
    Makes sense.

  • Tbonebullets

Oh, yeah, that -- Gray's friends did it, too, but Gray says he didn't know about it. That's completely unbelievable. Maybe, just maybe, Gray didn't know for sure the names of the people that gave him shadow money, so he has created psychological cover for his statements that he "didn't know" anything, just like Sgt. Schultz on "Hogan's Heroes" said, "I know nott-inkk!" But the character, Schultz, was a moron, so you kind of almost believed him when he said it. Is Gray also a moron? I mean, to believe Gray, you would have to also believe that Gray has an I.Q. of 85 or so. At the very minimum, really, Gray must have known that his buddies were going to do illegal things, but he was not to be told about any of the specific illegal things. So now he knows nothing, but he also really knows he's a crook.

40k in cash to increase, um, voter turnout?

    The day before the election?

    Are the counts honest?

  • Corky

Wow, amazing how people at the Citypaper seem to think they know more than the US Attorney. If everything you guys say is true, why hasn't Mayor Gray been indicted? Michael Brown is clearly a crook, but conflating his behavior with that of the Mayor is nothing more than the same old sour grapes from the forever whining Fenty brigade. Will you guys ever get over the fact that he was defeated by VOTERS, not campaign contributions?

  • watchdog

Corky, let me be clear... ...This is not about Fenty.....Fenty is not running for the Mayor and Fenty is no longer the Mayor...Gray, time is up, its simple.....Allow people to have their say
and vote. if you look at the campaign finance report from August 2013 unttil January 2014 it appears that they are all bed with someone. It is what it is however Gray will not get my vote.

One City. Many Crimes. Lotsa Felonies. DC has "colorful" politicians likely to end up in orange jump suits. Photoshopped images in 5...4...3...

    Tom M ^^^^ ROTFLMAO
    Reminds me of Mr. Pink.

  • stick2yourguns

poor baby...well anyone else involved can be sure to know that he will be snitching....he can't do no time.

  • DCPeopleWhoThink

Why did the COurts deny former CM Kwame Brown from attending a graduation of his family member, an allow this clown to go out of town.

  • DCPeopleWhoThink

The Washington DC community know that the late and great, former Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Ron Brown heavenly spirit is fulled of heart-felt disgrace and dishonor. Not to exclude, Michael's beautiful Mom, who is ill with our prayers for recovery.

Maybe, he will be sent to the penal site of his former colleague, Harry Thomas. Since, they both have enjoyed engaging w/ the disgraceful woman CWhiting, who Jack Evans thought could secure him with the majority votes in Ward 4.

    Just lock this guy up.

DC pols have been "getting" money off the books for years.....Fenty had raised $5 million dollars for his re-election 2 years out? ..... $5 million is ungodly amount for a DC mayoral race.... and he lost.... Was Thompson a donor? Yes, he was a donor. Did Fenty spend it all? No, he didn't.

It goes on and on..... this "off the book money" has been a staple in DC politics for awhile. Stinks but all of the bammas do it.... for REAL!

  • Roscoe’s Wetsuit

@REALDC - actually, not all the pols take off the books money - can you name the city councilmember who hasn't taken a dime from Thompson?

  • The Skinny on Vinny

Why would CC1 deal directly with Brown in these underhanded deals — at that price point, one would expect to be able to talk directly with the principals — and not Mayor Vincent C(onspirator) Gray?

  • Madam I’m Adam

I always wondered why Adam Clampitt mysteriously dropped out of that 2008 At Large race when he was clearly the best poised person to take that seat as a veteran and with other exceptional credentials. Wonder if he got a cash payoff off by Brown. Wonder if AC got a call from Ronnie and Vinnie.

    @ DCPeopleWhoThink

Because MAB is a squealer and clearly cooperating with Ronnie and Vinnie on their fishing expedition for the Great Gray Whale....
