Official Leaves Gray Cabinet to Work on Campaign

Staffers for Vince Gray have been working for their boss's campaign in their off-hours for a while, but now the mayor will have a high-ranking city official working for him full-time. Steve Glaude, the District's director of Community of Affairs, tells LL that he's taken a leave of absence from his city job to help Gray get re-elected.

Glaude, who will work as the campaign's political director, says his work will include building the field operations and get-out-the-vote efforts.

“Given the mayor waiting to announce, we have to have what you would define as a surge campaign," says Glaude, who ran constituent services for Gray when Gray was on the D.C. Council.

Gray campaign manager Chuck Thies talked up his new co-worker's connections in District neighborhoods.

“That he would involve himself in the campaign, immerse himself in the campaign, is both humbling and invigorating," Thies says.

Glaude's leave of absence will end after the April 1 primary, according to Thies.

Thies and Glaude a winning combo. True political powerhouse.

  2. #2

Good luck, Stephen. Vincent is on step closer to victory.

  3. #3

    Surge campaign.
Shallow bench is more like it.

  4. #4

    GOOD CHOICE!

  5. #5

@drez do you ever have anything positive to add? Put Gray aside for a second, Stephen has done a lot for us east of the river. What is wrong with that?

  6. #6

MR TOPHER how do you know Thies and Glaude are a winning combo?

  7. #7

Night Owl I have known chuck for a long time. He has so much integrity and when it comes to his passions a real pro. He is committed to electing a man he considers a great public servant. Steve has an impressive resume and since starting with Vince has only added value to the Mayor's efforts.

I understand both men respect and like each other. That is important. Both are focused on electing the best candidate for Mayor.

  8. #8

glaud also has deep roots in Washington, D.C. - if there is someone who understands gray's base and city's electorate it is steve. Chuck has the temperament to win this, together both fellas compliment each other. Don't take my word for it., just watch and see.

It won't be easy, but nothing worthwhile really is.

  9. #9

    ^ sock puppet theater.

  10. #10

See, this is what I am talking about. Now this is how you win elections. It all starts and end on the grass roots level.

Man, Vince get out the vote campaign is going to be a beast!

Tell me that Vince ain't the man!

  11. #11

AWWW YEAHH. ONE CITY RE-UP, GETTIN' AT YA -- APRIL 1ST.

  13. #13

mayor gray has demonstrated that he can govern and lead. there are still too many things to fix and he is the only one who has the experience and know how to fix things.

So many have tried before and failed. Gray is different, he has been serving people for a long time, way too long. Service is in his DNA.

  14. #14

Steve embodies the leadership and commitment that will encourage people to continue to support Mayor Gray. A strategic and wise choice.

  15. #15

The Gray campaign is struggling and underperforming. Gray is likely dispatching Glaude because Thies has proven the he requires supervision and because its time for the campaign to persuade the "more educated" citizens WOTR to support him. Unfortunately, Glaude will be of little use to him.

The poll numbers speak for themselves - the vast majority of DC Residents simply don't support Gray. This must be deeply troubling for him given the numerous advantages available to him as the incumbent.

It must have been deeply troubling when the EOTR straw poll revealed that he had not secured a majority of the "undereducated" and uninformed Black vote - that was his plan. Go EOTR and quickly secure the support of the uneducated Blacks. Go EOTR and secure the support of the ignorant who will support him simply because he's Black and resides in Ward 7. That crap isn't going to work this time.

He has dispatched Glaude because its time for the campaign to focus on securing the support of the "more educated" WOTR. But these voters are far less likely to support him simply because he's Black and resides in Ward 7. He's going to have to rely upon his record and unfortunate for him, his accomplishments are few. Those who argue that he has a good record obviously know nothing about the actual operations of the District Government. Voters WOTR will likely know better.

    @ Nationals Curl:

You wrote, "Service is in his DNA." You're wrong. Deceit is in his DNA. Would you like me to cite a few examples?

  16. #16

    More Gray team sock puppets.
Why not use Vernon Hawkins for GOTV again? Because he's now a convicted felon. What about Gray's last official field operations chief? Oh yeah, he said publicly that he complained to Gray about Hawkins. What about Gray's last campaign chair? Nope, he published an op-ed calling on Gray to come clean about the shadow campaign. So now we get white guy Thies, who endorsed republican Mara last year. All facts.

  17. #17

    LMAO!

You gotta love drez and truth..the dynamic duo who were once profiled by WCP...and held the mantle down against Fenty haters.
How depressing it must now be for them to lose Fenty and still hate Gray years later as he coasts towards reelection.

They are back at it again in 2014. This time, having nothing positive to say about ANY candidate while reserving 100% of their negativity towards a man they never supported. It proves they don't have a viable alternative...something WE had in 2010 (Gray).

  18. #18

    @ Truth Hurts!

You are absolutely correct. I've been following this Blog for several months and I have noticed patterns. For example, there are a few commentators that are District employees. SEis4ME is a fitting example - I know that he/she is a District employee. It is unfortunate, but they violate everything that they can - they violate everything that they touch.

This fitting example demonstrates Gray lack of integrity and poor judgment. Plainly put, he will do anything to get elected. I would probably be concerned if SEis4ME wasn't such a poor representative.

    WATCH THIS READERS:

SEis4ME, are you a District Government employee?

  19. #19

It is so sad that people who respond to this column won't stand up and be counted by using their real names. I can't imagine what they are all afraid of. Steve Glaude is a smart guy committed to the people of the District and to Vince Gray. That is a good combination.

I have endorsed the Mayor not as a slam on any other candidate but because at this time I think he is the best person to continue to lead the District forward. He has done a great job so why would we change administrations now?

The lack of integrity that schoolman talks about is clearly more about those like himself who hide behind fake names rather than stand up and be counted for his positions and beliefs using his real name and then have an honest debate over the issues that he seems to care about.

  20. #20

Hey Will Sommer, you should do a story about how Glaude got fired for misconduct from his last job, in the non-profit world, before joining Gray. He's a dirtbag.

  21. #21

Peter R's comment is on point. Why are people so critical? I am amazed by the level of rhetoric used by people on the periphery. I'm supporting and voting for Gray because he is the right person for D.C. at this time. I believe Steve Glaude is the right choice to mobilize the D.C. Residents at the grassroots level.

  22. #22

Martin Moulton is the Drez blogger and he hates Gray and anyone associated with Gray.

  23. #23

    @JR

You must be a Bowser supporter. Why not focus instead on running a positive and facts based campaign, instead of smearing people that have done so much for DC. Referring to Vincent and Stephen.

  24. #24

JR you dishonor our candidate for going down to her opponents level, we won't win, if we focus on the negative. What are you doing to bring people out for Muriel tonight for the straw poll.

If she can't win her ward, it is game over. We are putting lots of effort and money into tonight. So do your part. Bring some people out to vote for the next mayor.

  25. #25

GLAUDE is a true gentlemen. Always willing to help a brother out.

I work with another candidate, but he has always been respectful and fair. Good for GRAY hiring Steve for his campaign.

STEVE- if Vince does not get reelected, you should come work with us. We need more outstanding individuals in our team.

    Peace,

    ES

  26. #26

It is so entertaining to see Mayor Gray get under the skin of his haters who regularly post their eternal dismay.

Particularly those who haven't yet washed that green poo from their noses left over from the previous administration.

    Pass the popcorn!

  27. #27

Why are you people HIDING THE TRUTH, I have my info on good authority! Gray's team is all the same trying to distract from their scandals. Muriel will will tonight and don't worry, I'm doing my part.

  28. #28

    Peter Rosenstein:

As an initial matter, I believe that Glaude is a good man and loyal Gray operative. But Glaude is not running for Mayor - Gray is.

Secondly, the vast majority of commentators, including Gray supporters, don't use their real names. Why is this an issue for you only when Gray opponents us Handles?

I have noticed that Gray supporters, including you, simply rely upon "sound bits" when supporting him. For example, they say, "he's done a good job leading the city." Or, "he's a good leader." Or, "he's the best candidate." What has he done as Mayor of the nations capitol to warrant his re-election? Absolutely nothing!

I would love to express here why his record is so pitiful. Will you prove capable of providing an intelligent response? Or are you simply another uninformed voter making unsupported comments?

  29. #29

+10 Peter for pointing out the obvious.

  30. #30

    @ Peter Rosenstein:

    Dr. H. B. Alexander wrote:

"JUSTICE ALONE SUSTAINS SOCIETY FOUNDED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF RIGHT EXPRESSED IN THE NATIONAL LAWS ADMINISTERED BY PUBLIC OFFICERS .. JUSTICE IN THE LIFE AND CONDUCT OF THE STATE IS POSSIBLE ONLY AS FIRST IT RESIDES IN THE HEARTS AND SOULS OF THE CITIZENS."

This city, like most other areas of the country, is faced with a dilemma - a larger percentage of the wealth is being concentrated in the hands of a fewer and fewer number of people. The vast majority of the wealth is concentrated in the hands of the top "1 percent." This 1 percent is not interested in the wellbeing of the general population. This 1 percent is not interested in all citizens realizing the "American Dream." Their primary objective is to use their power and influence to acquire more power and influence.

The role of government is to administer the resources of the people (e.g. tax revenue, land, laws) in a manner that bests serves the interest of the people. Our local government has been compromised and no longer serves the interest of the people. Rather, it primarily serves the interest of the top 1 percent.

How does the 1 percent maintain control and dominance? It maintains control and dominance through our elected officials. Our elected officials have "forfeited" the interest of the people in exchange for the financial support of the top 1 percent.

Mayor Gray is ineffective as a leader of "the people" (the 99%) because he is far more interested in perpetuating himself than serving the people.

The primary means by which he has served the 1% is by REFUSING TO ENFORCE laws and "under equipping" programs designed to protect the interest of the masses.

He relies upon the ignorance of the people who are rightfully focused on everyday tasks (e.g. work, rearing children) and don't have the time to invest in understanding how the District Government actually operates.

  31. #31

I would hate for DC to lock up another politician right after they win if Gray is so fortunate to do so.

Time is ticking, to be honest, The Chairman has all the power on the council.

These dimwits need to unseat Phil Mendelson!

  32. #32

    @ SEis4ME:

What is obvious? Will you please write something that makes sense? Are you capable?

  33. #33

I don't shy away from saying that my support is for Muriel Bowser, what she lacks in experience and record; Muriel has in smarts. She is more than capable of running DC.

Once she makes a big announcement a critical voting bloc will win the election for her. Muriel like Adrian won't have to worry about catering to anacostia voters or those pesky religious zealots.

  34. #34

I AM SCHOOLMAN AND I DID NOT POST COMMENT# 32 ABOVE!

COMMENTATORS PLEASE USE YOUR OWN HANDLES TO POST YOUR COMMENTS!

  35. #35

Back in the day (under Fenty) people left the Mayor's office to work for Obama.
Now they leave the Mayors office to work on his personal political campaign.
Circling the wagons isn't a solution to political free fall.

  36. #36

E.J. Coleman you are truly pathetic. Now call that vile if you choose, but please shut your mouth before you swallow your foot with the leg to follow. Oh, that's right..... you type comments with your hands. Well put some more socks on them so you won't be able to type anymore.

Do you even think about your comments, or do they just tumble out of your shrinking brain? Muriel Bowser DOES NOT want the support of a truly foolish person who makes a statement like the one you just made about Anacostia voters. NO CANDIDATE WOULD WANT YOUR SUPPORT.

Enough!!! I'm going to be like the commenter who refuses to read your gibberish. And Mr. Rosenstein is a well respected journalist who is probably much too intelligent and has much too much self control to engage with riff raff like you. It would be beneath him.

So the DC government got tired of your lack of ability and terminated you because you carried it just a bit too far. Bully for the DC Government. Now if LL/MM would only relinquish your soul to where ever it is they put other riff raff like you whose comments we no longer have to scroll past, this blog would again be an interesting place to engage with interesting people (most of the time).

Also, for the most part, your fellow Gray haters are obnoxious in their obsessive Gray bashing, but they do seem to realize brevity is wit, which is about the only good thing I can say about them. Remember I said for the most part.

  37. #37

    nino/dino:

Several days ago you begged LL to stop posting my comments. You stated that you, and several of your retired co-workers, would stop reading LL if it continued to post my comments. LL ignored you, yet you still are obsessed with my comments and continue to read and comment.

Over the last couple of weeks you have repeatedly promised to stop reading, and commenting to, my postings. Yet you continue your obsession with me.

You're creeping me out man!! I'm serious!! I have never known a man to be so moved by another man!! You are creeping me the fuck out!!

Quit threatening and stop reading and responding already.
Do what you've repeatedly threatened to do.

You're acting like you're my BITCH or something.

  38. #38

    @ Noodlez:

I attended the Ward 4 straw poll this evening and the results have been reported.

BOWSER WINS AGAIN! BOWSER WINS AGAIN! She beat the brake shoes off of Gray.

What is your excuse this time?

  39. #39

    Dear Readers:

    I didn't post comment# 32 stating that I support Bowser.

DEAR COMMENTATORS, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM USING MY HANDLE TO POST YOUR OWN THOUGHTS.

  40. #40

Mr. Coleman: If I were a man I would probably find you and beat the socks off of your sorry behind, but that is metaphorically speaking of course. It wouldn't do for my grandchildren to see me hauled off in handcuffs because of a low life such as yourself. You move absolutely no one but your foolish self.

And I would be willing to bet the only BITCH you have EVER had is a DOG. Now you will get your wish. I will now take the high road as has Mr. Rosenstein and I will no longer respond to your inane input. I won't hold LL/MM accountable for allowing you freedom of speech.

BTW: Is that all Ms. Bowser could do in her own Ward?
What happened? The people in Ward 4 didn't need the $25 dollar gift cards? And what is it with those Bowser signs littering the Alabama Avenue streets close to Turner now that Bowser has moved into the MLK campaign office? I agree with Mr. Thies, it was a hollow victory. More votes.....No Endorsement....AT HOME.

That in itself will speak volumes in the elections that count. NO ENDORSEMENT FROM YOUR OWN WARD IS VERY TELLING IN A CITY-WIDE ELECTION. The voters in Washington DC will not be fooled by the empty suit that can't even fill the shoes of her empty suited predecessor.

  41. #41

    READERS:

    I DIDN'T POST COMMENT# 32 ABOVE ENDORSING BOWSER!

  42. #42

@SCHOOLBOY-EXCUSE??? SLIM HER OWN WARD DOESN'T ENDORSE HER FOR MAYOR WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU PROCLAIMING?

BOWSER HAS REPPED WARD 4 FOR OVER 10 YEARS AS ANC/WARD 4 COUNCILMAN, HER CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN UP AND RUNNING FOR A YEAR, SHE IS RUNNING FOR MAYOR AND HER HOMETOWN WARD THAT SHE WAS BORN & RAISED IN DIDN'T ENDORSE HER?

SLIM YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING IT DOWN A NOTCH!

  43. #43

    @ Noodlez:

You guys are always making excuses! This is very simple.

MAYOR GRAY LOST THE STRAW POLL IN WARD 8. MAYOR GRAY LOST THE STRAW POLL IN WARD 4. WHAT PART OF LOST DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND YOU IDIOT!!

  44. #44

    May The Saints Preserve:

I have had to go back on my word this morning saying I would not read anymore of E. J. Coleman's comments.

However, the Fates and Karma prevail. The schoolboy has put his foot so far into his mouth his leg has finally followed.

(Freudian slip - a slip of the tongue that is motivated by and reveals some unconscious aspect of the mind.)

    And I rest my case.

LL/MM I won't ask you to explain how another 'schoolman' could have posted comment #32 about catering to voters in 'anacostia'.

And dear readers, how are we to know exactly who posted comments #33, 38, and 40? As if any of us really care.
If EJ Coleman has any sense at all he/she will realize that all schoolman comments have now become moot.

    THANK GOODNESS!!!!!!

  45. #45

IDIOT??? THE IDIOCY COMES WITH YOU PUTTING CREEDENCE IN BOWSER. SHE CAN WIN ALL THE STRAW POLLS SHE WANT. THEY DON'T MEAN SHIT!

YO ASS WIPE PRESEASON VICTORIES DOES NOT A CHAMPION MAKE.

  46. #46

I am the real Schoolman the other one is a fake. Neo-Dino you are so right. I am a fool.

  47. #47

I am also somewhat ignorant and just like to blame GRAY for everything. Deep down I know he has been a good and responsible executive.

Muriel has nothing but her smile and charm to offer. She ain't that smart either.

  48. #48

I am the REAL schoolman. SCHOOLMAN is the fake. I own my handle. LL don't let them take away the little I already have. I am schoolman.

  49. #49

    Schoolman, schoolman: Where ya'll been?

    Schoolman, schoolman: What ya'll see?
