Catania Chief of Staff Leaves for Exploratory Committee

Independent At-Large Councilmember David Catania hasn't announced yet whether he'll run for mayor in the general election, but here's a sign that he's getting closer to making a bid. Ben Young, Catania's Council chief of staff, left his job Monday to work on Catania's exploratory committee.

Young, who ran Catania's 2006 and 2010 re-election campaigns, will be working on setting up Catania for a potential candidacy.

"If David decides to run, he's going to need to be ready," Young tells LL.

Catania's exploratory committee raised $116,460 in the fundraising period ending on Jan. 31, spending only $3,661 of it on a website, leaving it with $112,799 cash on hand.

Catania got some more good news Tuesday, with his D.C. Promise Act to provide as much as $60,000 in college tuition to some District students passing its first Council vote unanimously. Potential mayoral rival Jack Evans tried to postpone the bill over concerns that it would affect a federal tuition program, but his motion to delay it only garnered the support of mayoral hopefuls Muriel Bowser and Vincent Orange. (The Washington Post editorial board, LL can't help but notice, also urged the Council to wait.)

The problem with Catania is that he doesn't listen to anyone about anything. Holmes-Norton event expressed to the council that this bill would threaten the federal grant funding we currently get from the federal government to assist DC students go on to college.

This guy is too disrespectful, bull headed and arrogant to be Mayor. We've dealt with one of his like not long ago. Except this Republican will be twice as bad.

He could definitely win this thing. I didn't think he would run but it definitely looks like it.

Evans will come in behind Orange and, possibly, Wells.
So no better than 4th and perhaps as low as 5th.

I sincerely hope DC does not get confused and vote in this tea party republican disguised as an independent. He became independent because of the gay issue which is personal to himself.

Catania is to surly to become mayor.

    Noodlez,

You are right on it. All of sudden Catania and other whites are SOOOOOOO interested in educating BLACK children. Give me a break. Self serving! Self serving! Anything to fool the people and get votes.

Evans doesn't have a snowballs chance. Bowser is too stupid to figure out what she needs to do to win outside of her area. Gray has it in the bag.

Ben Young is a decent and smart guy and I don't blame David for having him on his exploratory committee.

I often don't agree with the Washington Post on political issues but did on the issue of the Promise Act. While the premise is good the bill needed a lot more work and should have been tabled.

I am in favor of helping all young people go to college but there are issues of motivation to actually get a degree, how can taxpayer scholarships be repaid by those who get them- and I am not talking loans but rather possible committments to the community after graduation- paying it forward for future students.

This bill could clearly be better than it is now with more thought and work.

This must be the year of the gasbag. First Jack Evans (claiming DC's econonmic Renaissance as his own), now Eleanor Holmes Norton defending her ever-dwindling, ever-less-meaningful turf.

How is it that the DC-TAG program is working so well when Congress is already killing it? They are killing the program by attrition, year after year. Congres first created the TAG program in 1999. When they created it they recognized that the $10,000 a year provided by the law would close the gap between what it would cost for in-state students to attend a public school and what it would cost for a DC student to attend the same school. Since then, according to the College Board statistics, college costs have more than doubled. During those last 15 years Congress hasn't increased the funding for TAG at all. Does anyone think that in this age of decreasing budgets that Congress is ever going to increase the funding? Of course not. Why then shouldn't the District do someting to attempt to close that gap once again?

Hey Drez (Martin Moulton/MM)! Why do you have a Jack Evans sign in front of your townhouse? You are a confused and crazy hater.

Ive noticed that you always seem to have this inside information or empty slams on folks. Now you are saying Catania stole money through McDean contracts. Lets be clear that company is one of the largest specialty contractors in the world. Even without the city contact they would be flush with money. They had them long before David worked with them and will long after he is gone. You should actually do some real research and stop with the bullshit attacks.
