Grosso Endorses Graham Challenger Brianne Nadeau

This should make for some awkward encounters around the Wilson Building. At-Large Councilmember David Grosso tells LL that he's endorsing Ward 1 challenger Brianne Nadeau in her bid to unseat incumbent Jim Graham.

"It’s not normal for councilmembers to endorse people who are running against their colleagues," Grosso says.

Grosso says he chose to support Nadeau instead of fellow challenger Bryan Weaver because he wants to see more women on the Council. As for Graham, Grosso says he thinks it's time for him to move on.

"I think he’s done a decent job in the Council, but I think we all have a time where we have to step aside and let new folk come in," Grosso says.

Grosso's recorded a robocall for Nadeau, and plans to do more later in the campaign. Graham didn't respond to LL's request for comment. Listen to the call below:

Update3:30 p.m.: In a statement, Graham writes that he doesn't think an endorsement from Grosso, an independent, will have much of an effect on the race.

"This is a Democratic primary," Graham emails LL. "David isn’t a Democrat. I am not sure his support matters one way or another."

Why would a councilmember not endorse a challenger? That's a dumb rule. If a better candidate is out there, support that person. Just because someone is already on the council doesn't mean they get a free pass. That's absurd.

  • Ward One Resident

Does he give any other reason for supporting her over Weaver than because she's a woman? That's sorta lame. I'm all about councilmembers branching out and supporting challengers, but there's got to be a better reason than just because of chromosomes.

  • DC Guy

He said he gave that as a reason over supporting Bryan Weaver. I have only heard Brianne speak once, but I thought she was very smart and seems like she would make a good Councilmember.

I wish Weaver would drop out, otherwise another split vote is likely.

  • Ontario Place

I am an Adams Morgan resident who will be supporting Brianne. Has anyone checked out Jim Graham's website? We need someone fresh who will use her PR background to reach out to the young people in this ward and approach constituent services with new strategies. That is Brianne, she is personable and smart. I like Jim, but time to switch it up.

  • Ward One Resident

Use her PR background to reach out to young people? What does that even mean?

Graham has got to go. Weaver doesn't sound bad, but I've never seen him in my neighborhood. Nadeau has knocked on my door. She has good ideas and isn't scared of the whole Ward. I'm voting for her.

  • Hahaha

Grosso is an idiot. He will probably endorse Bowser as well since he wants to see "More Women" on the council. If and when Jim Graham wins, Grosso will be the first one off the council. No one is going to endorse him so he better make sure this current term is one for the ages!

  • SEis4ME

Yeah I gotta admit Grosso sounds ridiculous suggesting that he supports Brianne over Weaver because she's a woman.

Not a very good look dude...like not at ALL.

  • Ward1United

Yay for Grosso! He is a true reformer on the council and he's the one I trust the most in the wilson bldg. Brianne has come by my house at least twice and she's smart, energetic and scandal free. Weaver needs to drop so we can get rid of Graham.

  • EllieK

I agree that Weaver needs to drop out. I really like the man and hope he stays in politics, but this is just not his time.

  • joan

I'm liking Grosso more and more -

  • truth hurts

Good for Grosso. The only elected pol with the guts to say Graham must go. I'm sure he chose Brianne over Weaver in part because Weaver can't beat Graham. She can and will if Weaver does the right thing.

  • Marvin E. Adams

For those who refuse to accept C-H-A-N-G-E, move over! This is just the tip of the spear. Mark my words... Congrats to Grosso for having the conviction to go against conventional wisdom and the status quo.

  • Ward4forever

Grosso is a lobbyist for the insurance industry. He shamelessly shills for his former employer, Blue Cross, while he sits on the Council. Ronald Machen, please pay attention.

  • Jes’ sayin

So Grosso, who renounced his registration as a Democrat and changed to Independent so that he could legally run for the seat he now holds on Council, has no problem now sticking his nose in a Democratic primary and telling Democrats who to pick.

Oh, and he says he prefers one of the candidates because of her gender, even though he ran against a woman - and beat her - to win his own seat.

Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, I guess.

Pass the popcorn. It's endorsement season. I'm waiting for Lindsay Lohan and Justin Bieber's endorsements before I decide who to vote for.

  • DC John

Why would anyone in his or her right mind, vote once again to restore a City Council Member who has been reprimanded and censured and been stripped of his Committee chairmanship by his own fellow Council Members? Mr Graham...time to take a bus or do you prefer a taxi from the Wilson Building and let someone new take your seat.

  • Pingback: No more Mr. Nice Council

  • Dan

If the bus or taxi comes for Graham, make sure that Grosso and Wells get on the same bus.

  • tntdc

Not a Graham fan but Nadeau ?

She's stupid, obnoxious and ridiculous. Probably one of the lowest IQ princesses to come out of AU ever. And she has the sense of entitlement that goes with that pedigree.

Weaver is at least a viable candidate- almost won a seat last time, knows the issues, intelligent, a reformer, etc. It's a race between Weaver and Graham that Nadeau's ego is throwing to Graham. (Or as a DC Demo Party official she may be there to intentionally split the vote to get Graham re-elected).

  • OG in DC

@tnt-- how can it be a race between Weaver and Graham when Weaver is nowhere to be found? Or is Adams Morgan the only neighborhood in Ward One that votes? Is that why he hasn't been anywhere else in the Ward? Or at any meetings? Or talked to anyone in my neighborhood? Graham doesn't show up over here until election time. Bryan talks about it, but I haven't seen him. And he split the vote last time. He didn't "almost" win.

  • noodlez

IM WITH TNT ON THIS ONE!

I TRULY BELIEVE WARD 1 WOULD BE BEST SERVED BY HAVING BRIAN WEAVER AS THE REP ON THE COUNCIL. HE'S BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN POINTING OUT AND LAYING OUT GRAHAM'S NAUGHTY SIDE. IT IS TIME FOR SOME NEW BLOOD IN WARD 1 THAT HAS MADE A LIFE IN WARD 1.

HIS WORK WITH YOUNG FOLK SHOULD NOT GO UNNOTICED!!!!!

FOR NADEAU TO RUN NOW AND WIN WOULD ONLY BE PURELY OPPORTUNISTIC ON HER PART. HER OPPORTUNISTIC DRIVE WILL CAUSE A SPLITTING OF VOTES IN WARD 1 AND QUITE POSSIBLY GET THE GRAHAMASTER REELECTED.

WEAVE PUT TIME IN ON ANC AND IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS.
HIS EFFORTS ARE LEGIT AND IT SHOWS.
    IT'S HIS TURN.

IF HE TURNS OUT THE YOUTH VOTE IN HIS WARD HE WINS.

  • REALDC

    Who cares?

Grasso does not have coat-tails in ward 1 or anywhere else in town. SMH
