Deputy Campaign Manager Involved in Straw Poll Out at Gray Campaign

A surprise loss in last Saturday's Ward 8 Democrats straw poll turned out to be the last hurrah for one Vince Gray campaign staffer.

Deputy campaign manager Kouri Marshall is no longer with the campaign, according to manager Chuck Thies. His exit, first tweeted by NBC 4's Tom Sherwood, comes after Gray lost the straw poll to Bowser by 33 votes despite having three times as much support as Bowser in wards 7 and 8 in a Washington Post poll.

Thies confirmed that Marshall was involved in organizing turnout for the event. Marshall, who didn't respond to LL's requests for comment, managed Anita Bonds' successful at-large D.C. Council run last April. Thies declined to comment on whether he fired Marshall from Gray's campaign, but did use the occasion to wax on the benefits of a small staff.

“I have purposely prevented the payroll from bloating during the first two months of this campaign," Thies tells LL. "Because you can hire a few people for a long period of time, or you can hire a lot of people for a short period of time."

  • Are You Surprised

Kouri Marshall is not loyal period. At the first sign of defeat, this dude bails. And it wasn't even real defeat.

  • Matt

More like he got outhustled by Bowser (and anti gay marriage) organizer/bigot Bob King.

  • truth hurts

So the straw poll loss really did matter to Thies. But we knew that already Chuck. You have no credibility.

  • http://themanopener Camel

I thought the kid who ran Bond's campaign now holds the title of manager of Jack's.

I also heard there was a high level staffer abandoning the Jack cluster#@&$.

  • DC and Stuff

Bob King hasn't been seen around the Muriel campaign since sometime last summer. Last time he saw her in person was at the Rhode Island Ave festival. Had nothing to do with the W8 straw poll.

Kouri is a nice guy, but also a political amateur. Bonds like Obama campaigns were no challenge at all. Thies is doing well and has a good candidate. This 2010 campaign nonsense will only streaghten gray campaign. His record as chair and mayor speaks for itself.

  • HUAlum71

The way I understand it, Kouri WAS a nice guy. Young, very immature and totally lacking tact. He also had no organizational skills. But worse that all of that, he was in waaaaayyyyy over his head and didn't have the sense to own up to that fact in time for the VCG campaign to help him get out the senior vote in Ward 8.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the snake oil salesman, Bob King sabotaged him in an effort to elevate his own slimy self in the Gray Campaign.

King is pimp and a whore at the same time. He oo0zes with the stuff

straw polls are useful as they get press.

    good press is needed.

therefore, results in straw polls are useful.

  • Marvin E. Adams

Why am I NOT surprised? Young Nr. Marshall, will live, in all probability, to fight another day. But as I mentioned earleir, an 8th grader in a civics class could have delivered D.C. for President Obama and the At-Large victory for Bonds. Those were Marhall's bona fides, at least, they were the ones he self-professed.

As for Mr. Thies and his acumen, P-L-E-A-S-E!

I was not impressed with Kouri's community organizing skills and his lack of coordinating and communication with Chuck on data I was gathering for the Gray's campaign in Shaw on my free time.

I do wish Kouri well and will learn from errors and bounce back.

  • Bernadette

WOW - I find it amazing that Chuck is talking about paying people to get the seniors out to vote. We, the "real" campaign coordinators, who did it all, never got paid and Vince Gray won every voting poll by 86% in Ward 8. So, Mr. Chuck, your candidate not winning had nothing to do with Kouri Marshall and the seniors, it had to do with the working class people, making a decision as to who we want as our next Mayor. Let's see how you do in Wards 4, 5 and 7!

    mahdi leroy, oy vey.

The Serious Money Aint Begun To Flow Yet!

  • HUAlum71

    My, my, my!!
So the snake has come out of the ground. Glad to here you're a part of this blog, #10.

If I were you I'd be more concerned about the campaign you're (mis)managing with those low numbers your candidate is getting than I would about how Chuck and the Mayor do in Wards 4,5 and 7.

Instead of veiled threats which reveal your attempts at continuing to sabotage Gray, you should be concentrating on keeping your guy above the numbers of WHITE candidates EOTR. THAT YOU CAN'T, IS WHAT I FIND AMAZING.

Get over it B, you didn't make the cut for a high position in the administration. Your candidate will never be able to put you where you THINK you should be because he is so busy trying to dodge the Machen gang he didn't even realize the DUD he selected for his campaign manager.

    Wassup, LL/MM.
My stuff hitting the moderation button because of it's veracity????

  • stick2yourguns

poor kouri didn't give out 20.00 & 25.00 gift cards for a vote in the straw poll like BOWSER did to the as she calls them "poor ward 8 don't know any better will take anything you give them residents"

  • Son of Washington

I'm sorry but the young Mr. Marshall was a novice when he got lucky on Anita's campaign and was simply exposed this time around. He isn't ready for to be on air let alone prime time. I said it when he so called limped along during Bonds campaign and it just shows.

To make matters worse he has no connections or support in the city and that matters. You can't organize and get things together when you don't have the skills or the base level support and connections. You really need both or at least one of them and the ability to hustle and make having one work.

  • Marvin E. Adams

So many neophytes, novices, newcomers, especially to the political arena, do NOT get it! It should N-E-V-E-R be about "I" or "me", it should A-L-W-A-Y-S me about "WE." Similarly, reporters should report the news, as opposed to attempting to being the news. There's a very thin line, of which some seem to be able to grasp, whereas some just do not get it. Lessons learned -- I hope.

  • HUAlum71

Kouri certainly had neither connections nor support in the city. Heard he came from the Hillary campaign before joining the Bond brood.

Even if he had the $20 $25 gift cards, he didn't have to means to offer them.

Sad thing about it (FOR MURIEL), is the fact that the gangsters who took the cards played her ass. They took them and put up the yard signs and went to the Straw Poll.
What most of them say they WILL NOT do is vote for her Fenty fronting ass to be Mayor.

And that pitiful play by Orange using that pitiful poor excuse for a campaign manager was exposed by his sorry ass being beat by not one, but TWO White men; one of whom has a neck so red it spread to his face as well. Nuff said?????

  • OFA Alum

Sounds like the Gray campaign needed a scape goat and found one in Kouri. The Bonds campaign was no sure win, and he pulled it out for her by working field hard. He has a loyal clique of volunteers and a strong network throughout the city. Kouri is an incredible organizer, and will bounce back from this backhanded effort.

    To Blog #15
Lets do the the edits 1st .. I am blog #12 (not #10)
Glad to here? should be spelled hear (not here)
I am not managing nor mismanaging anyone's campaign, however it is my "right" to support and vote for whomever I choose...and a snake...I am "NOT".
Veiled threats & attempts to sabotage Gray? I don't do things in concealment nor disguises nor in hiding. I do things openly and I would never sabotage Gray ... I'm not that kind of a person. I was and still am "retired". If I wanted to work I would have continued working making 6-figures $$. I was not looking for a position (I've had those) but I sure did help those volunteers working everyday in his campaign in ward 8 get jobs.... cause he sure didn't. I am finished with this .... but I sure will be looking at results in Wards 4,5 &7 and I know you will also. Just wanted you to understand where I am coming from.

  • neo/dino

OFA Alum, I hope Mr. Marshall does bounce back. He seemed like a hard working young man, but your perceptions of his loyal clique of volunteers and strong network throughout the city is just NOT a fact.

He and his loyal clique fell far short of what 1 person could have done with the help of 3 seniors in Ward 8: Get them to the straw poll on time.

My babysitting network of grandmothers could have provided at least 100 Gray supporters. We've worked with him over the years and we still just luv us some Vincent C. Gray. Many of us have a Ward 8 network, but like the Gray campaign honchos, we thought Mr. Marshall had it covered.

  • itsjustamess

Kudos to you, Bernie! Tell them, you were here long before Gray and will be here long after Gray is gone and gone he is. He's lost more supporters in Ward 7 and 8 faster than a cancer patient loses weight. If Blog #15 doubts anything you say, the proof is not in the pudding, it's in your public service that has kept almost every mayor and many a city councilmember in office. Gray fell onto his own rusty sword and is surely going to die from self-inflicted wounds.

  • Bernadette

    TO: HUAlum71 - blog#15
Reminders: (1) I am still not a snake; (2)I don't hide behind a made-up blogger name; (3) I say what I mean and I mean what I say; (3) Vince lost in Ward 8 and he just lost in Ward 4....Reminder----still waiting for Wards 5 & 7. However, according to what 'CHUCK' his campaign manager said, he is "NOT" concerned about what the endorsement of the wards ...winning the wards don't mean anything to CHUCK
Now what does that say about a campaign manager? He needs some pointers on running a campaign, but I am sure his new DEPUTY will get him straight on this...I'm sure. Waiting on wards 5 & 7.....we shall see.

  • VoteTommyWells

Well, I guess his bounce back came sooner than expected. You're right neo/dino, Kouri won't be making that mistake again.
