Gray Campaign: Tom Sherwood Commits “Journalistic Malpractice”

Vince Gray's outburst at Washington City Paper's own Aaron Wiener won't be the last time the mayor takes on the media in his re-election bid. The Gray campaign pushed back on NBC4 reporter Tom Sherwood yesterday, with Gray campaign manager Chuck Thies accusing Sherwood of "journalistic malpractice."

Like every other reporter in town not employed by WUSA9, Sherwood needed his own shadow campaign apology quote after Gray's image-polishing interview with Channel 9's Bruce Johnson. But Gray wouldn't talk about the apology, leading Sherwood to block the mayor's path until he got an answer. The mayor's bodyguards weren't thrilled, leading them to "muscle" Sherwood (or maybe it's the other way around—judge for yourself on the video above).

Sherwood tweeted the scrap, with a description of it that makes Gray sound like the District's own Nicolae Ceaușescu. Thies, no novice at Twitter feuds, shot back.

In an interview with LL, Thies laid some more charges on the dean of District's press corps, from putting his cameraman's health at risk to "stalking" the mayor.

"He has stepped from journalism to journalistic malpractice," Thies says. "His coverage like this is circus-like."

Thies says Sherwood is sticking his camera in Gray's face, behavior he says is more appropriate for another scandal-plagued politician: crack-smoking Toronto mayor Rob Ford.

"Tom can go to Toronto if he wants to cover Rob Ford," Thies says. "I'm sure NBC will gladly buy him a plane ticket"

LL notes that handheld video cameras are restricted to the back of the room at Gray's Saturday campaign launch.

Sherwood tells LL that he's just trying to get the mayor to expand on his apology. "The mayor has never explained his role or his campaign for 2010 and hopes everyone will just fast-forward to 2014," Sherwood says in an email.

Trashing reporters seems like a counterintuitive strategy ahead of Saturday's launch, but Thies says it's fine. As long as people are talking about scraps with the media, they aren't talking about Gray's rivals. "All of our opponents are dying to get the kind of attention that Vince Gray gets," Thies says.

If Tom Sherwood did this in the US Capitol, he would be facing the loss of his Radio % TV Gallery credential and access to House or Senate galleries.

  • Ward1United

I think it's fair to ask the questions that Tom raises (and others too) but we need to not make it a rugby like scrum every time the Mayor is out in public. There are a lot of issues to be discussed and this is only one...and an old one. What are the other issues Tom?

  • Typical DC BS

So Ward1, you're fine with a mayor whose campaign committed multiple felonies, along with a doltish mayor who knows constituents like you will overlook HIS felonies? For him to claim he wasn't aware of any wrongdoing is a bald-faced lie.

But, this being DC, there's no surprise the citizens are just as scummy as their soon-to-be felon mayor and various convicted councilmembers.

  • Tilden Street

Let's call this for what it was: Sherwood had to get a story to go along with Bruce's. That's how it always works: one reporter gets the scoop and the others have to follow suit. More times than not egos are damaged along the way.

Sherwood was trying to get a story, got persistent about it. Some might say aggressive, and got a little push out of the way so the Mayor could get in his ride and scoot.

    Nothing more.

  • Sally

Sherwood is an immature bully that instigates the underlings (younger reporters like Madden, Etc.) to carry out not news but HIS biased agenda. I challenge him to produce a story he has done in the past year that shows his boy Jack Evans in a negative light.

  • drez

Sherwood has covered politics in this town for decades. He literally wrote the book on it.
He has more credibility than gray and thies put together do.
This is nothing more than One City trying to work the refs.
    Remember this?

    Same shit, different day.
    Still stinks.

SHERWOOD UP IN HIS FEELINGS THAT BRUCE J. GOT THE SIT DOWN!
NOW HE MAKES HIMSELF LOOK PETTY AND PAPARAZZISH.

AS IF MAYOR GRAY IS GOING TO CONTRADICT HIMSELF IN THAT MANNER AND FORUM.

TOM SHERWOOD THAT WAS PITIFUL! JUST PITIFUL.

  • wreckfish

Yes it was a bit clownish but I'll take it and more. Gray is hiding some smelly sh*t. Voters deserve a look.
    Wait. Bad analogy.
But the criminal campaign that was waged on his behalf cannot be overlooked.

IS NOODLEZ GOING TO FELLATE THE NEXT MAYOR TOO? MORE AT 11!

  • Tom s Franklin

Sherwood is a bully and hack. He should retire or go work for his patron Jack Evans.

  • EColeman

Sherwood may have wanted a story, but more importantly, he exhibited the frustration that many District residents feel. We are sick and tired of corruption! Mayor Gray's lack of regard for the law and the rights of the citizens of this city has not been sufficiently exposed. Also, the people lack a medium to freely express their experiences under this administration. Terrible things have happened under this administration. Those critical of Sherwood would probably be much more sympathetic if they knew what he knows.

  • neo/dino

EColeman: Are you implying that Sherwood has been covering up something? From my humble perspective Sherwood was attempting to grandstand and bully the Mayor which is not a good idea under any circumstances. His demeanor comes across as that of a petulant recalcitrant CHILD who should be sent to his room.

I say Hooray for Bruce Johnson. He was able to do his job while not being frustrated by his personal thoughts one way or another. He was fair, insightful and totally objective throughout the interview.

I find it interesting that so many people refer to 'the law and the rights of citizens of this city' as if Mayor Vincent Gray is not a citizen with those very same rights.

The presumption that you and Mr. Sherwood know so much about nefarious activity in the city is indicative of what can only be considered pompous hearsay. What is this blog on which you so freely espouse your calumny if not your medium in which to do so?

  • Gordon

Bruce Johnson is a professional. Undisputed credentials.

  • drez

Vincent "Chris Christie" Gray is the real victim here. He's apologized (though for exactly what he's never said) and it's time to move on. Anyone who disagrees is being an unfair bully and deserves to be mocked.

Thanks for the response! The primary responsibility of the Mayor is to uphold the laws of the "State." This explains why I mentioned the law in my comment regarding Mayor Gray. Last election, I campaigned vigorously for him. I was disappointed when I realized that Gray, and many other District officials, have a flagrant disregard for the law and their duty to uphold it. I am not just making unsupported comments. Until recently, I was an employee of the District Government. I witnessed Gray
and numerous other officials routinely violate contracting, personnel, human right, etc. laws with impunity.

Would you like for me to cite a few examples? I will also e-mail you documentation to support every statement I make.

  • neo/dino

    To the commenter EColeman.

Please do, but not until I set up a private email address others won't have access to. Wouldn't want to shock their tender sensibilities.

I too have had some horrendous experiences with the DC government over many, many years. I also worked (But not really that hard) in the last campaign. We can share horror stories on both experiences.

I still say Tom Sherwood acted like a little spoiled brat.
He was also riled by the fact that Bruce Johnson was treated like a rock star at the Kick-Off this afternoon while he was treated like The Invisible Man. Of course it was the Mayor's crowd all the way.

Watch for a private email address. Is the EColeman for "school man" or is E. Coleman your name? Just askin.

By the way, did I just read that drez has come to his/her senses; or is that an infantile (freudian slip) attempt at satire? Probably both. Go 'figger!!'

Sherwood, the WaPo, David Kennedy at the snews Current. Jack must be delivering a lot of chicken dinners to keep these reporters off his back. Or perhaps its steak given his warchest and the stack of money he has to burn.

This town deserves a better class of criminal. And Jack's the man to give it to us.

i supported vince last campaign, but I am torn because of friendship with him or going with jack evans who is clearly the best suited for the job...i am not comfortable with holding vince responsible for other peoples mistakes.

  • DAN

    stick2yourguns:

How is Jack Evans clearly best suited for the job? Are you basing this on the fact that he is the longest serving councilperson? Jack Evans has been committee chair of Tax and Revenue during the grand theft and many other shenanigans in Tax and Revenue. Are we to overlook this?

  • 20011

SCREW ALL YOU ASSHOLES WHO THINK THE MAYOR SHOULD GET A PASS JUST BECAUSE HE "APOLOGIZED." PROPS TO TOM FOR STANDING UP TO THE MAYOR AND HIS HENCHMEN.

  • 20011

SHERWOOD HAS FORGOTTEN MORE ABOUT LOCAL POLITICS AND REPORTING IN THE LAST FIVE MINUTES THAN ANY OF YOU WORTHLESS PARASITES HAVE LEARNED YOUR ENTIRE LIVES. PIECES OF SHIT LIKE YOU ALLOW ASSHOLES LIKE GRAY TO GET AWAY WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES.

    FUCK YOU ALL.
