Seven Democrats File Petitions for D.C. Mayoral Primary

Jack Evans with his petitions

All seven of the major mayoral candidates turned in at least double the amount of signatures due today to make April's primary ballot, according to their campaigns.

It's hard to independently quantify how many signatures the campaigns turned in, since the campaigns only turn in the stacks of stacks of petitions pages. Without his own count, then, LL's relying on estimates from the campaigns themselves. Below, what each candidate is saying they brought in:

  • Jack Evans: 10,287
  • Muriel Bowser: 9,000
  • Vince Gray: 8,200
  • Vincent Orange: 6,300
  • Reta Lewis: 6,000
  • Tommy Wells: 5,400
  • Andy Shallal: 4,500

Gray's haul should put to rest the idea, based on his late start date and questionable choice of analogies, that he wouldn't make the ballot. But supporters hoping to see Gray back on the campaign trail will have to wait until his Jan. 11 campaign kick-off at Ward 8's THEARC. Campaign manager Chuck Thies says Gray is too busy being mayor to turn in his own signatures, as Evans did today.

"He hasn't the time for campaign paperwork," Thies writes to LL.

Like finance disclosures, the campaigns use signatures to signal that they're doing well. But unlike contributions, which can go towards buying mailers and candidate-branded condoms, signatures past 2,000 are only useful for providing a cushion against challenges.

There is one more use for the data provided on the petitions, though: as fodder for a campaign's mailing list.

"They're going to be much more likely to take a yard sign," Evans campaign manager Josh Brown says of the people who signed.

Has Evans' campaign manager not ever run a campaign in D.C.? A lot of people sign multiple petitions. I will sign just about anyone's petition. I even signed Jack's. But I can tell you not only will I not likely take a yard sign, I won't be voting for Jack. Sheesh...

  2. #2

Josh Brown claims he "ran" DC for Obama which means he shot two fish in a barrel. He is a cute kid in a Justin Bieber kind of way, think One Direction with a data list, so I can say without a doubt, that Jack has the tween vote

There is no doubt that it is impressive how many signatures Jack Evans has collected. A lot of people, including myself, did not think that he had a chance of winning this race. The boring more qualified candidate rarely wins. But Evans is running a strong campaign and today has a real shot of winning. I think it is about time we have a Mayor that knows what he/she is doing.

Ward One Resident - Why would you sign a petition of someone you don't believe in? These things matter. I only sign petitions for candidates that I want on the ballot.

  5. #5

Shit it is something that Jack Evans is winning on every metric so far in this race. With all of the candidates in this race, you don't need that many votes to win. Having a lot of people signing your petitions certainly does not hurt.

  6. #6

Nice to see that Mayor Gray in only 1 month did 8,000 signatures........We are on the right path. Reelect Mayor Gray. WARD 5 Resident

  7. #7

Imagine how many more signatures Muriel Bowser could have gotten if so had allowed gay people to sign her petitions.

  8. #8

I have seen so many GAY PEOPLE working in BOWSER campaign...what are u talking about doroti........

  9. #9

Meh. Looking at Jack's expenditure/signature ratio he spent about $16/signature. Not impressive when one considers lampposts don't vote.

  10. #10

Isn't Jack using the Bishop's to collect his signatures (as well as "barfing up" Jack's signs all over DC)?

"The D.C. attorney general's office filed misdemeanor charges against Scott Bishop Sr., who oversaw Williams's signature drive, and Bishop's son, Scott Bishop Jr., and daughter-in-law, Crystal Bishop. The cases mark the only prosecutions to come out of an investigation into forgeries and other problems with the mayor's nominating petitions in 2002."

  11. #11

Why include an ancient link showing the Bishops were charged in connection with Anthony Williams' campaign? More recently, Bishop worked for Gray's shadow campaign. Google bishop and gray. Priceless.

  12. #12

I will sign any petition presented unless the candidate lied to me. Sorry Phil M!

WARD 3 & REBECCA HAS BEEN JIM JONESED! SWILLING THE PROVERBIAL RED KOOL AID OF JACK EVANS POSTING 10K SIGNATURES FROM A SIGNATURE PETITION TO SHOW HE IS WINNING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE MOST SIGNS ON LAMP POSTS ACTUALLY SHOWS HOW WEAK THIS JOKER IS!

THE AMOUNT OF MONEY HE IS WASTING ON HIS FORGONE CONCLUSION QUEST IS SHAMEFUL AND TOTALLY DISRESPECTFUL TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS CITY WHO ARE HURTING FOR JOBS AND MONEY. HE COULD PUT SEVERAL FOLK TO WORK FULL TIME FOR SEVERAL YEARS WITH $170K HE SPENT TO WIN THE SIGNATURE/SIGNPOST RACE.

YO WARD 3 & BECCA YOUR BOY JACK EVANS AINT GONNA WIN SHIT! MY BAD HE WILL WIN THE RACE FOR MAYOR OF LOSERVILLE. AGAIN!!!!

ONE CITY TRAIN PULLING INTO 2014 FOR REFUELING!

bowser could have got 1 million signatures I would more to Virginia if she won.

  16. #16

Dorothy don't feel bad...Bowser turns her nose up to everybody. She is being nice now because she wants votes after April 1st she will go back to being the witch she is.

  17. #17

When will this plague of sticky glued caps locks keys end? WHEN!?!?!?!?!!

  18. #18

Just make it easy and vote for the Mayor. The city is better now than it was 4 years ago, and none of the other candidates can make an argument that they can do better.

  19. I just don't know...

Chuck Thies is a clever with a quip. You have to hand him that, but it's going to take a whole lot more than saying the nastiest things about the other candidates to win. But could he please clarify what campaign he was referring to when he said that Gray, didn't have time for the campaign paperwork? Was this referring to the current election, or the previous one where there seems to be an issue with a $600,000 shadow campaign? Maybe Gray didn't have time for the campaign paper work in either election and he leaves such things to people like Jeffrey T., the Gray 4, or Ms. Thies?

PS. Oh, yohoo, Ward, I'm blushing and voting for Jack so that cute young campaign manager, Josh/Justin Brown/Bieber sticks around to run my race. Word is that he has more than a big data list, if you know what i mean.

PSS. And Noodlez, we can certainly count on you to again win the race to the bottom, showing what a nasty piece of work you are. Sadly, they still let you post your infantile, uneducated comments in ALL CAPS. Let's hope you're doing better on your CASA's intake assessment and that a GED is within reach this year. We were saddened when we heard you'd missed the cut off, again, for getting the GED last year. Better luck in 2014. We hear that Jack Evans is a big proponent of adult education. When he's Mayor, you may get the tutoring help you obviously need to help you learn to type. We'll encourage everyone to say a silent little prayer for you and your studies. Soldier on, don't let the previous setbacks with the test keep you from trying to pass it again.

PPSS...Finally, Dorthy and PP, please let us know why gay folks couldn't sign Muriel's petitions. What's the inside story about gay people working on the Muriel campaign? Do they have to do it in secret? I thought that everyone was out of the closet these days and even gay people were allowed to participate in the election process. Did we miss something that's hidden in the Bowser campaign? Surely, Cookie Buffet wouldn't let anything be hidden now that he's supporting Muriel...look at his excellent record of meeting with Mayor Fenty when he ran the LGBT Office for Muriel's mentor. He met with Fenty...how many times in 4 years? He could do the same for the LGBT community again...

7 candidates, crowded field for a finite number of votes.

now, by assigning probabilities and multiplying by possibilities, we eliminate 4.

since the remaining three have all generally gotten along, the action will be among the 4, who will have an elevated air of importance.

or will it just be petty personal attacks?

meanwhile, the streets got plowed, the garbage got picked up, and it's a sunny day.

  21. #21

Stick2yourguns, can you start packing now. Muriel will be the next Mayor.

  22. #22

Da hell she will. Nobody wants a dummy for mayor

  23. #23

Vince Gray will be the next Mayor.........Fenty (Bowser) again nope.

  24. #24

I live in ward 4 Muriel bowser will not win. What has she done in ward 4 absolutely nothing how can she run a city when she can't even run her own ward. Mayor Gary will win again.

  25. #25

Gray will not break 25% of votes cast.

  26. #26

I don't wish to see any of the sitting council members become mayor, most notably the ones (Orange, Bowser, Wells) who have been unresponsive to my service requests and inquiries to them on various ocassions over the years. Now I'm getting Bowser's newsletter and campaign in my mailbox, which I ignore and trash, the way she does the service requests of many of her constituents who don't live in the highly-favored communities of the ward. Yeah, it's been a few years since some of the incidents I personally recall, but the memories of all citizens aren't short, so they shouldn't think that we don't grade their performance as council reps. Wells is a dingbat who now comes trolling through Ward 6 to grin and grip hands, but got annoyed by a complaint concerning an agency under the purview of one of his committees. Orange couldn't brushed off citizen complaints to the Govt Ops committee about ANC mishandling of finances . Evans gave more due dilligence to gettings Nats Stadium than focusing on the malfeasance at OTR.

    They are ZEROES.

  27. #27

Typo Correction: Orange couldn't be bothered and brushed off.....

OK, TH... here are two more recent links, both from LL:

Much of that money is going into the Evans campaign's total dominance of city lamp posts, organized by District field-game impresario Scott Bishop. Campaign manager Josh Brown is especially pleased with Bishop's signs. "I want this city to look like it barfed up Jack Evans," Brown declared.

    http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/looselips/2013/10/17/jack-evans-hits-the-club/

"And what a field operator Evans has. Evans’ go-to sign guy, Scott Bishop Sr., has a weathered face and a long history in District politics, including guilty pleas relating to a signature fraud scheme that lost Williams his place on the ballot in his 2002 re-election campaign."

And what is the point of raising the Williams-Bishop connection? Just to remind folks that nothing really changes.

And I wouldn't get too smug about Jack. I certainly have no intention of voting for him but the vote is so deliberately hacked up on the Dem side--and there are plenty of rich Republicans and Independents in DC that could switch parties for the primary--that he just might wind up as the nominee.

  33. #33

    @Noodlez,

    Brother, you're the man!

Man, I wish I could write like you. Mad respect for you.

    SPOT ON!

Now, as to the number of votes, voters, and who's on base.
