Gray, Bowser Accuse Each Other of Metro Deflection

In another time, the recent Red Line delays would just be another example of America's crumbling public infrastructure. But this is election season!

Faced with complaints about an independent transit agency he can't control, Mayor Vince Gray's Twitter team deflected questions about the delays onto Ward 4 councilmember and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority board member Muriel Bowser:

Bowser, who's running to replace Gray, tells LL that she's eager to take riders' complaints about the transit agency. After all, she says, she handles her responsibilities (the implication: unlike certain mayors who will go unnamed).

Bowser insists that she's not accusing Gray of passing the buck. Instead, she accuses him of worse. "I think he's scratching for relevance," Bowser says.

Not that Gray is without his own appointee on the Metro board, having nominated Tom Downs, the board's current chairman, to represent D.C. in 2011. Why doesn't Gray take his concerns to Downs?

Mayoral spokesman Pedro Ribeiro says because Downs is meant to be an independent board member, District residents are better off grousing to Bowser. Who, Ribeiro adds, should spend less time talking about tweets and more time trying to fix the transit agency.

"Maybe she should ride the Metro once in a while and talk to people on the Red Line, and I guarantee you she'd get an earful from D.C. residents and Ward 4 residents who have to suffer through this every day," says Ribeiro.

Gray should tweet about the meeting he had with Jeff Thompson at Harris' condo. The meeting immediately preceding the shadow campaign launch.

  • RealDC

"Queenie" Bowser on the bus or the train, get real! LOL. That will be the day you see pigs fly!

Bowser has more excuses for her mediocre record than anybody I have ever seen.

This is funny, but she billed the city for her high cell phone bill when she was traveling because she had to call in for a metro board meeting. At least that is what she said. SMH. But she will not ride the train or the bus??

Again, what has she done as the ward 4 council member that we would want her to be mayor??

  • DD

Bowser -- many of us think she's a good girl, but most feel like she is not ready for prime time. She has the personality of a door knob and many think she's not the smartest person in the room. Anyone who has spent 5 minutes alone with her will agree. She thinks the Mayor's office should be given to her much like her Ward 4 seat was given by Fenty, but she will be humbled. She really should have waited until 2018 to make a run. Vincent Orange ruined her chances in wards 5, 7, and 8. Wells will take 6 and Evans will easily take 1, 2 and 3. Shallal will take the the Yuppie and Artsy vote..and we still don't know about Gray.

  • Smh

Don't assume Orange has Wards 7 & 8 in the bag.

  • justsayin

Gray is "scratching for relevance" and snobby Bowser is trolling for a populist image like any other empty suit that wants to be mayor.

  • Nose dive

Vince Gray is scratching for relevance???

Muriel Bowser can't hold Vince Gray's socks as far as intellectual capacity.

The fact that Muriel Bowser is running for Mayor is a joke in itself. What in the world is she doing running for Mayor. And I am simply reiterating what has been voiced by people across the District of Columbia... What has she accomplished that would make her think she is qualified to run for Mayor?

She barely finished college if you want to call that institution that she graduated from, an institute of higher learning. And we get it... Just adopt the Fenty model... I'll exercise and run and ride bikes, drink strained wheat grass, and show up at your door for 2 minutes and give you some broad B.S. and keep it moving right on into the Mayor's office. Wrong Drag Queen... We are much smarter than the dupe Fenty pulled on us 6 years ago. We expect someone who is highly intellectual....someone who has an impressive resume of solid accomplishments... someone who has experience in leading and managing more than 5 people.... We expect to vote in the best candidate... It is not you, and sadly you listened to your ego and the power hungry, greedy disgruntled Green Team when they talked you into running. What a fool!

Guaranteed you will not win Wards 5,7, and 8, and we all know Ward 4 is up for grabs.

You're running around touting all the support you have across the city, but we can count the number of yard signs on one hand, especially in your own Ward.

Your nose dive is going to be hilarious.

The main thing that differentiates Bowser from Fenty is that Fenty had CHARISMA! I believed in Fenty. He could sell snow in Alaska. He could charm the hell out of Dick Cheney he if wanted. LOL. Hell, I voted for him both times! I want to like Bowser for Mayor, I really do, but she doesn't move me at all. The race was hers to win until Orange, Reta Jo and Andy entered. I agree with the comment above that she should have waited until the 2018.

As much as I hate to admit this, whoever Marion Barry endorses will win Wards 8 and 7 and it looks like Barry will easily endorse Orange (Orange voted against censure and they're frat brothers) unless Gray runs. And don't sleep on Orange's ability to raise funds from the business community.

Don't know Evans or Wells but I know Wells will win his home Ward and Evans will will Wards 3 and 2.

And Gray, scandals aside, our City is doing as well as it was when Anthony was Mayor. And I hope that he runs again. From what I hear, he will!

  • Mister Goat

Both of them have been in positions where they could have worked to improve Metro, and both have pretty pathetic records there.

If Bowser were a good leader, she'd have been talking about this a while ago and Gray wouldn't have been able to point to her the way he did in his tweets.

  • DC Guy

I agree with most of what has been stated here. Murial is an empty suit. She can barely run her office, much less a multi-billion dollar city budget.

The vote will be fractured. If the Mayor is at all able to run on his record, he should win easily. Big "if" though.

  • Shawdow machine

Good to see the Vince Gray ward 9 residents holding on to relevance via the comment section. Keep up the hard work. One city baby!

  • Alan

Points to the Gray team, lmfao

  • Alan

I live in Ward 1 and while I don't particularly love either of them I'd take Gray over Bowser any day of the week. At least he's sharp, she's just a bag of hot air.

  • SEis4ME

Agree w/most but w/a few exceptions. I don't know what college Muriel went to but they guy who barely finished college (after the 2008 election) David Plouffe, was highly instrumental in electing Barack Obama. Bill Gates? Marc Zukerberg? So let's not get to academic elitist here.

It's ridiculous to call her a drag queen.

The race was never Bowser's and had it been between her, Saint Wells and Evans, she could've very well came in 2nd or 3rd.

Knowing how influential the bike/transit types have become (through blogging) she could have easily tried to wean off some of Wells' base by making large pronouncements about/against Metro. But she didn't. She will now split what's left of her black constituency w/Reta Lewis and who knows if they'll get enough of the white women vote.

  • SEis4ME

@Shadow, NOPE, Ward 8 all day baby!

But I get it, Ward 9 is code for "EOTR black"

  • justsayin

    Right SEis4Me...

Ward 9 isn't represented by this commenter either. I live in Ward 4 and I'm not impressed by Bowser and that goes back to when she was ANC commissioner.

  • Marvin E. Adams

Memo to both Messers. Machen and Mayor Gray: If you got it, bring it!; and if you are going to run, declare it!, respectfully. The citizens of the District deserve to know, so that we may plan and act accordingly.

  • noodlez

BOWSER FOR ALL FOR HER SHORT COMINGS WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE RACE.

SHE WILL WIN WARD 4 AND WARD 5 WILL BE A TOSS UP EVEN WITH ORANGE IN RACE BECAUSE OF THE BLACK WOMEN FACTOR. WELLS WIN WIN WARD 6. EVANS WILL PULL WARDS 2 AND 3. WARD 1 IS ALSO A TOSSUP BECAUSE OF MIXED RACE, GENDER FACTOR AND MILLENNIALS.

EVEN IF MAYOR FOR LIFE ENDORSES SOMEONE GOOD MONEY WILL GO TO WHO EVER LAYS DOWN THE BEST CAMPAIGN IN WARDS 7 AND 8.

    MY PREDICTIONS FOR DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY:
    MAYOR GRAY
    BOWSER
    EVANS
    LEWIS
    WELLS
    SHALLAL
    ORANGE

ALL THOSE WARD 9 REFERENCES ARE OLD AND CODE.
THE SAD THING IS ALL YOU BITCH ASS BAMMAS ARE FORGETTING WARD 10 (MOCO)?
BLACK FOLK LIVE THERE ALSO AND IN GOOD NUMBERS.
    KEEP SLEEPING.

    ONE CITY.

  • RealDC

@noodlez- One problem with prognosis, very few black women (less than 10%) like or support Bowser-for real. No appeal to he own demographic group. Major problem. Her hero had the same problem.

If that's the card Bowser plays, she will lose badly.

Also Orange will win ward 5.

  • justsayin

It will be interesting to see if Bowser can pull support from black women. My daughter and I count ourselves among numerous black women in Ward 4 that have been unimpressed with her representation and responsiveness. It's not for any lack of wanting to work with her, but the fact is, Bowser is elitist and indifferent towards the concerns of many in the ward she represents, including her own neighbors.

  • The Griot

Apparently, there is an organized campaign to disparage Council member Bowser and the extraordinary work she has done on the DC Council. Our neighbors are very proud of her and will support her in the election. Criticizing her work her intelligence, her integrity is ridiculous and mean-spirited. Shame on you.

  • SEis4ME

@TheGriot, care to share a few key details of her extraordinary efforts?

    Thanks!

  • DCShadyBoots

    Ouch @Pedro Ribeiro! THAT...Was a read!

  • justsayin

Disfavoring a candidate doesn't make for an "organized campaign" against them, or is this not a democracy where one does have an OPTION? I don't know anybody posting on this blog, and would venture to guess that most (if not all) don't know each other, much less do we have an "organized" anything to express how we feel about a candidate whose performance has been mediocre.
