Ex-DDOT Head Gabe Klein Moving Back to D.C.

Brace yourselves, smart growthers. Former Adrian Fenty-era District Department of Transportation boss and eternal Greater Greater Washington crush object Gabe Klein is coming back to town.

Klein announced his plans to resign as head of Rahm Emanuel's Chicago Department of Transportation today, the Chicago Tribune reports. Klein tells LL he's planning to take time off, work on some business plans, and advise start-ups (just like his old boss!).

Klein, who once toyed with running for an at-large seat on the D.C. Council, says he won't be seeking elected office in the District—at least not anytime soon.

"If I was to do something like that..." Klein tells LL. "Maybe in a decade."

Under Fenty, Klein pushed hard for streetcars, bikesharing, and bike lanes. After Fenty lost the 2010 election, Mayor Vince Gray gave Klein the boot at DDOT in favor of Klein's deputy, Terry Bellamy.

In fact, Klein had just gotten off the phone with his old patron when he talked to LL. The gist of the call with Fenty, according to Klein: "Life's an adventure, right?"

I can't wait for the grand return of Fenty and Klein to DC politics. It's really only a matter of time... get your popcorn ready. It may not happen this year, maybe not even in 4, but it's gonna happen SOMEDAY.

  • Peter Rosenstein

Nice to welcome Gabe back to DC. With all due respect to Fenty- his time in elected office is over. Hope he is successful in California in his new ventures.

  • Corky

Uggh. May he forever be stuck in gridlock at NY and FL Aves.

With little to no respect for Peter Rosenstein, perhaps he should follow his own advice. At least Adrian doesn't believe his own press releases like Rosenstein who somehow believes the fantasies he has constructed around himself.

Oh, and wasn't it Rosenstein wbo foisted both Fenty and than Gray on anyone simple minded enough to think his opinion mattered. He's two for two and now he's touting Terry McAuliffe, clearly character not factoring into Rosenstein's calculus. I did note he wasn't cloying on the Mayor in this year's gay pride parade.

Really Rosenstein the only thing your continued opining accomplishes is to further diminish The Blade if that could be possible.

Mr.DeMille he is not worthy of a close up.

Andrew Sullivan and Gabe Klein both?
It's like DC has won the lottery.

THE ONLY REASON HE GOT THE JOB IS BECAUSE HE RESEMBLED TANGHERLINI BUT THAT IS WHERE THE COMPARISON STOPS. THIS BAMMA GABE KLOWN GOTS NO VISION. I WOULD GATHER THERE ARE NOT ANY MORE PLACES IN THE CHI TO INSTALL BIKE LANES. SO HIS JOB IS OVER!

THE PLACE WAS LITTERED WITH THEM IN 2011 BECAUSE OF THIS JOKER.

GABE KLOWN SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR THE WASTE AND FRAUD CONNECTED TO THE STREETCAR TO NO WHERE AND HE IS THE PRIME SUSPECT. CRIMINALS ALWAYS GO BACK TO THE SCENE OF THE CRIME! ITS A HUMAN NATURE THANG.

Well this is rather interesting. Gabe's chariot landed in Chicago thanks to the huge push he got from his superstans here in DC who misrepresented his accomplishments and skill set.

And now now he's fleeing a city as huge as Chicago where worked w.a much more competent mayor just to come back here?

Klein's plan is to return to the private sector. I for one hope he remains true to his word.

DC doesn't needs Gabe Klein to come back and return DDOT to what it was under his tenure - a glorified college urban planning experiment. Thanks to Gabe's "Do Anything to Discourage Driving" policies, DC is overrun with poorly-located bike lanes, subsidized bike-sharing stations for the affluent, and traffic cameras run amuck. And Gabe and the Little Prince's yet to be operational streetcar from/to nowhere is a national joke.

The latest trick Gabe has up his sleeve - so-called "road diets" and "complete streets" - has turned Chicago traffic into an even worse mess than it was prior to his arrival.

Gabe Klein should concentrate on what he does best - running food trucks.

I don't think that Fenty is coming back to town while he's, uh, pursuing his interests in California. He has a bigger Apple in mind, and it's not in NYC.

DDOT's high water mark of vision and competency was under Dan Tangherlini. I wish for any DDOT boss who would come in and remove naive ideologues like Zimbabwe and stubborn hacks like Cheeks.

I wish this guy would stay in Chicago because I dislike him as a person. He has his own hidden agenda. I truly believe, this guy is an undercover racist.

  • Ward 4 Voter

SEis4ME, maybe the gangs ran him out of Chicago? LOL

  • Ward 4 Voter

    LOL@Norma; you better read, girlfriend.
