For Adrian Fenty, the West Coast Is the Best Coast

Now that Adrian Fenty is raking in money in Silicon Valley, he should think about kicking some of it toward Vince Gray's hefty legal fees. After all, Fenty owes him—a new Post piece on the ex-mayor's California exile makes it look like losing to Gray in 2010 was the best thing that ever happened to Fenty.

The profile, which comes with a must-see illustration of Fenty dreaming about various Silicon Valley favicons, reveals a former mayor who divides his time between moderating conference panels and going on dates with Steve Jobs' widow. His job appears to consist of getting lunch with government officials on behalf of tech companies, but he also still finds time to dine with best pal Peter Nickles when he's in D.C.

Best of all, unlike the 54 percent of Washingtonians who voted for Gray in 2010, Fenty's fellow tech gurus love his brusque style. California lieutenant governor Gavin Newsom, for one, can't get enough:

“You, Adrian, are an example of this—doing audacious things,” Newsom says, referring to Fenty’s 2007 school takeover, which installed [MichelleRhee, who closed dozens of schools, fired hundreds of teachers for underperformance and set in motion the backlash that would end his political career. “You paid a political price by not getting reelected,” Newsom adds, “but we are all beneficiaries of the principles you stood for.”

Make money, enjoy the California weather, and get treated like a martyr? Maybe more residents of the Wilson Building should try losing.

Mr. Sommer, you have some green poo on your nose.

Does Steve Jobs widow know they say he beat his wife? I like Adrian but he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.I think the widow is way older than Adrian so having been married to Steve Jobs my sense his intellect isn't what impressed her. I imagine the Apple accounts makes it cheap at half the cost for that law firm to retain Adrian "of counsel" (on menus, wine lists, lube).

Same with Newsom. Not surprised he would be all over the mayor thinking they would be hot "workout buddies" and could lather up afterwards. I'm sure the Lt. Gov could blow a big load of business Adrian's way. I can only imagine the mere presence of AD makes Jerry Brown weak on the knees.

And here we thought all the preening, biking, running was just his vanity while Adrian was actually working on his retirement.

Kneel Alpert and Jar Lynch must be throwing hissy fits.

Good article, well worth the read.
My favorite quote came from a ward 7 ANC who said he missed the sense of urgency that Fenty brought to city services.

  • SEis4ME

Losing actually WAS the best thing to happen for Fenty because it allowed him to leave under the misguided notion that he somehow was a victim AND it allows him to use that in order to rake in the shytload of money. Michelle Rhee suffered the same "fate" although I believe her cozy relationships w/Republicans will do her in....

Oh, and you gotta love the California LG who clearly learned about what happened during Fenty's term from a news article.

And then there's the "love" of his brusque style Will Sommer addition. Uhm, RHEE had the brusque style...NOT Fenty. He was just in over his head and allowed his number one star to write herself out of a job.

  • Will Sommer

    @SEis4ME

Gotta disagree with you here, Fenty definitely had a reputation as "brusque". The last LL wrote a whole cover story about it!

"In Fenty’s own office, current and former lower-level staffers call him a “moody” boss. One says he became so accustomed to Fenty’s angry side that he could see the mayor’s rage coming by watching for the throbbing of a vein in his head. “He runs his ship by fear; people are afraid of him,” says one staffer. “He’s one of the biggest assholes I’ve ever met in my life.”

I met Adrian Malik Fenty running for the Ward 4 D.C. Councilmember against the former Ward 4 Councilmember Charlene Drew Jarvis. I had so much faith in Adrian because I felt he would be a good Councilmember and he was. I voted for him to become D.C.'s mayor. After Adrian was elected mayor, he seemed to change for the worse. He became arrogant and surly towards those that had supported him in the beginning. I voted for Vincent Gray out of anger to get back a Adrian Fenty for being surly towards me and others. Gray turned out to be surrounded by corrupt and convicted supporters. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have voted for either Adrian Fenty or Vincent Gray. However, I've made peace with Adrian and I truly wish him well. I hope he and Michelle Fenty are happy in their new lives.

    Correction:

I hope he and Michelle Fenty are happy in their seperate new lives.

  • Mustafa

I can truly tell YOU Fenty was an evil mayor

  • noodlez

THAT AL JOLSON PIC OF HIM ABOVE IS STILL PRICELESS!!!

FLENTY DIDN'T WANT THE JOB ANY LONGER BECAUSE HE KNEW HIS SORRY ASS WAS GOING TO GO TO JAIL BY KNOWINGLY BREAKING THE LAW BY FUNNELING MONEY AND CONTRACTS. THE PRESSURE WAS GETTING TO HIS SOFT ASS!

THE MOFO WAS NEVER AT WORK! ATTEMPTING TO OPERATE DCGOV FROM HIS BLACKBERRY AS HE COOLED DOWN FROM HIS PELOTON EXCURSIONS WHILE BEING ESCORTED BY MPD AS THEY CLOSED DOWN STREETS FOR HIM AND HIS BUTT BUDDIES.

I BELIEVE ONE OF THE BIKE RIDING BAMMAS HELPED GET SOME SORT OF RACE HERE. WHICH IM SURE IS SOME SORT OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST. FAGGIE FENTY WAS ABOUT AS CROOKED AS THEY COME. HE WAS ALSO SLICK AS SNOT ON A DOOR KNOB. OUR BI-CURIOUS MAYOR WAS ALSO CAUGHT IN SOME BROAD'S HOUSE WHEN HIS ASS SHOULD'VE BEEN MAKING SOUND DECISIONS FOR THE CITY.

YO WILLY EARL CALL THAT CHUMP AND ASK HIM WHERE IS THE $10K COLNAGO BIKE HE WAS ILLEGALLY GIFTED BY OL' ERNESTO?

  • Asuka

So many pathetic, angry, ex-teachers. I love how Fenty STILL drives you all crazy four years later. Despite you and your teachers union thugs' best efforts, Adrian seems to have gotten the last laugh.

  • SEis4ME

@Will, fair point. In the context of Gavin's quote, I guess I read "brusque" as in able to get things done in a Chris Christie sort of way..which deserves a compliment.

I remember those stories and always associated that w/him being over his head and power-struck as opposed to a brusque style that had long lasting effects. I disliked Rhee tremendously but her style did affect some sort of change that will be around for a time to come. Not surprisingly, 90% of Fenty's national acclaim was centered on Rhee...not his effective management skills.

Either way, Gavin needs to pay attention to the west Coast because he's clearly an idiot.

SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!Hope he has been taught enough sense by his wife for him to survive on his own.

  • Bobby Dylan Rocks!

It has been said MANY times before, most notably by Woody Allen, that Californians aren't that bright, nor do they have much depth. Cases in point: California has Hollywood, the East Coast has the seat of US Government and the seat of US Finance; and before people site Silicon Valley as an example of intellectual innovation, computer technology was initiated on the East Coast by companies like IBM, Digital Equipment Corporation and Wang Laboratories. Inarticulate, unimaginative triathlete baby fenty fits right in on the West Coast (as many have also already noted).

baby fenty was a bi-racial George W. Bush and governed as such; not a local version of Barack Obama, as so many foolish people fantasized when baby fenty defeated the distinguished Chair of the DC Council, Linda Cropp, in the 2006 Democratic primary mayoral election.

White people in Wards 2 and 3 love baby fenty because he could kick the ass of the District government's hard working, middle class African American employees; sparing them the embarrassment of having to own up to their politically incorrect wishes.

And let's put an end to the trope that rhee rhee the witch was forced out of DCPS. She QUIT, because she was a spoiled bully who couldn't have her way. Now she sits at the table with Walmart's Walton family, the Koch Brothers, Jeb Bush, Bill Gates (corporate if not officially gop) and other holier-than-thou repooplicans who believe in a dumb-downed, low paid, multiple choice test taking, compliant US populace.

  • Typical DC BS

Sorry @BobbyDylanRocks - the only party valuing dumbed-down voters are Dumocrats. They constantly try to push union pension nonsense (see Detroit and Illinois for 100% DUMOCRATIC fiscal debacles) that ignores actuarial science, not to mention basic math skills.

Save the "low intelligence" blather for the heart of the DUMOCRATIC party.

    Two observations:

    1. Adrian can still rile up the onecitidiots

    2. Fenty, Klein, and Rhee have all done extremely well post-administration and are well respected nationally (outside of DC). Contrast that with the former One City Crew - where are Lorraine Green, Gerri Mason Hall, HTJ, Hawkins and the rest of the crew right now? There is a lesson here...

  • DCShadyBoots

    Two more observations:

    1. Former Mayor Tony Williams still lives and thrives in the District of Columbia as CEO of the Federal City Council.

    2. Williams' work speaks for itself.

  • SEis4ME

    Realistic observations.

1). Adrian still does rile up people just as Marion Barry and George Bush does...

    2) Fenty has done well FOR HIMSELF but as far as being seen as the go-to person on matters of DC or education reform, he's not done much at all.

    - Rhee (once the darling of Democrat Education Reformers) is now relegated to ponying up w/Republicans because her national support has indeed waned.

    - Klein? Outside of DC and Chicago, no one know who he is nor has he done anything remarkable that would put his face on the map.

  • Blevins

    @DC Shady boots: Totally agreed.

it's as Barry and Bush DO, btw.
