Tommy Wells Ditches “Livable, Walkable”

Wells_Tommy-1

It's hard to imagine mayoral aspirant Tommy Wells without "livable, walkable," his shorthand for a transit-friendly approach to development. His campaign has printed stickers with different plays on the phrase, and he hands out Livable Walkable Awards every year. But now, Wells says he's breaking up with his longtime slogan.

Don't get Wells wrong—he's still all about bike lanes. He just thinks everybody else has caught on to the "livable, walkable" gospel, too.  "Now it seems that every candidate and public official is talking about livable, walkable communities," Wells tells LL.

In its place, Wells' campaign is getting a new slogan: "Making D.C. a great place to live, work, and raise a family." Wells says it's about convincing people to stay in the District to raise their families, but LL doesn't know if that makes up for the loss of catchiness.

So rest in peace, "livable, walkable." You made for easy headlines .

From one banality to another banality.
    We get it.
    What will you do better?

As a Ward 6 resident, I am glad that Wells is running for Mayor, because he won't be the Ward 6 Councilmember anymore.

He lied to our community multiple times about important issues such as parking and Reservation 13.

Tommy is extreme in his anti-car agenda. He thinks we must all give up our cars and walk or bike-ride everywhere.

He realizes that being his extremism against car-drivers is unpopular. (Most people drive cars.) So he's dumping the anti-car thing for now.

    LIVABLE-WALKABLE = BROKEABLE-RUNOVERABLE

IT AMAZES ME HOW WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE INCREASE IN PEDESTRIAN DEATHS, BIKE V. CARS AND RISING INSURANCE RATES AS IT RELATES TO THIS CLOWNS (AND FENTY) BRAIN FARTS WHEN IT COMES TO THE OPENING OF THE FLOOD GATES (MORE BIKES, BIKE LANES, PED CROSSINGS) WITHOUT A SOLUTION ON WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THE WATER (ACCIDENTS, AGGRESIVE DRIVING, ETC).

THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER AWARENESS PLAN IN PLACE TO BRING THOSE OUTSIDE THE LOOP IN THE LOOP. YOU HAD A MAYOR WHO WAS THE EPITOME OF LIVABLE, WALKABLE BUT HE WAS SO CAUGHT UP WITHIN HIMSELF THAT HE COULDN'T SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREES.

THE STREETCAR TO NOWHERE (IN THIS BAMMA'S WARD) IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF SPENDING TAXPAYER DOLLARS WITHOUT INVOLVING, INFORMING AND RECEIVING INPUT FROM THE VERY FOLK WHO WOULD USE AND BENEFIT FROM THIS BOONDOGGLE!

He pushed the anti-car agenda and now that he is running for mayor he wants to distance himself from that same agenda. No it is not popular in DC and Wells gets the message NOW. But he has no other agenda so it is hard to see what he is running on for Mayor. Nothing! Some new made up slogan that is unworkable just like the last one. No substance to this candidate.

  • Actually

Suggested new Wells slogan: Making a great Washington even greater!

"Where's the beef" is not just a problem Wells has to address. Absent any indictment, all the candidates will have to convince voters that 1)the city is being managed poorly 2). They are the ones to fix it.

Both of those present a very, very steep hill for any of them to climb.

But yes, I must chuckle that Wells ditched the very slogan he used to rally the anti-car/Gray crew.

How about "Making City Services Accountable!" or "Let's Get Our Taxes' Worth!" I'd vote for that.

Can't wait for the District to ditch Tommy Wells. He just embarrasses himself. Let's see how many Wells staffers post support.

The slogan should be "take a hike" as in, he needs to take a hike from his and Cheh's war on cars. I drive in DC and I vote and I sure as heck will not be supporting any candidate who's mission in life is to transform DC into Amsterdam and make car ownership nearly impossible.

Noodlez less cars in the city means more room for you to drive around. How could you possibly be against that? :)

This may not be fair, but I doubt that the District's first White Mayor will be from Alabama.

  • DCShadyBoots

    How about this:

"Come meet me at the bar"

  • noodlez

@q-smartrip, bike & sidewalks is my mode. Ima city boy!

  • ssmd

    How about joke-able, laughable

  • RealDC

Sounds like somebody's campaign is "flat"..... lets change our motto....lol... good luck.

The good news is that the other candidates are flat as well.... Funny, Gray is still the frontrunner even without announcing his bid and with a "crusade" investigation from the US Atty. If you got something on the mayor, then charge HIM! If not, Gray for 4 more!

To all the "sore losing Fenty Crew", that includes Nickles, Bowser, Lightfoot, etc..... Get OVER It and stop whining about the 2010 Election, Fenty LOST because Fenty was a JERK!! Period. You should have managed your candidate better.
