Mary Cheh: This Pool Stinks!

Councilmember Mary Cheh says the Wilson Aquatic Center hasn't been doing its share of keeping the city cool during the summer.

In a letter yesterday to fellow Councilmembers Kenyan McDuffie and Marion Barry, Cheh lists the many problems with the pool, reopened in 2009 after a $35 million renovation. It's closed on the hottest days of the summer because of air conditioning problems, according to Cheh, and incorrect chemical mixes have also forced closures. Swimmers who go to the pool when it is open are victimized by locker thieves, Cheh writes.

"Why is a pool that isn't old—that cost $35 million to construct—not working appropriately?" Cheh spokesman Devin Ward says.

Cheh wants McDuffie and Barry, whose committees have responsibility for the Department of General Services and the Department of Parks and Recreation respectively, to schedule a hearing on the pool this fall. DGS and DPR haven't responded to LL's questions about the state of the pool.

Cheh struck a harsher tone last week in a letter to Mayor Vince Gray about Wilson and air conditioning problems at the Tenley-Friendship Library. "Irrespective of the cause of the problems, the situation is unacceptable," Cheh wrote. "And the response has been unacceptable. And the communication to the public has been completely inadequate."

    Let's see.....

Cheh first endorses Gray for Mayor (and Kwame for Chair), later calls for Gray's resignation, and then bitches and moans when his agencies don't do her bidding.

You see, a smart politician (not Cheh) knows that calling for the Mayor to resign gets you NOWHERE fast. In fact, it moves you BACKWARDS. Now you can't get anything done.

    Silly, silly Mary.

Well, I don't know about THAT (gaga), but I am happy that Mary Cheh has brought forward the condition of the pool and that there is simply no excuse for it! She's 100% correct.

One thing that's always frustrating about dc pools is the "closed" sign in the diving areas. What is UP with that??

  • DC Guy

It was Fenty's cronies that had the contract, no?

  • NE John

    doody in the pool!

  • Sally

Maybe Cheh could have sent Gray a text message asking for a status update on his resignation and the Wilson Pool repair schedule?

Who at OGS is responsible for maintenence?

  • dcgovcorruption

This pool was built and designed on former's mayor fenty watch, what

  • Drez

    Lack of proper maintenance, obviously.

  • Typical DC BS

More likely a maintenance issue - DC government isn't known for being on top of issues like this. It falls squarely on Gray's shoulders.

The facility is 3 or 4 years old. It's well past the shake-out period. It's pretty hard to blame "AC issues", "improper chemical mixes", or "locker thieves" on the construction staff.
All of these things are maintenance issues that fall squarely on OGS.

  • dccommish

Mary Mary why you Bugging! I think she's worried about the rats that are reunited taking over the pool as their new refuge in DC!

Improper care/custodianship is the sole reason for the water chemicals to be out of or there to be rampant theft. Those things have nothing whatsoever to do with construction that took place 4 years ago.
As for the a/c- the most likely problems are maintenance related. If the materials or workmanship were defective it would have shown up in the first year or so.
What's the warranty on the a/c?
Where is this in the contract process for repair?
Why isn't OGS putting out a statement?

Give it a rest. Improper care/custodianship is the sole reason for the water chemicals to be out of or there to be rampant theft. Those things couldnt possibly have had anything whatsoever to do with construction that took place 4 years ago. You know this.
As for the a/c, at this late date the most probable problems are maintenance related. If the materials or workmanship were defective, it would have shown up in the first year or so.
    My questions:
What's the warranty on the a/c?
Has improper maintenance voided any warranty?
Where is this in the contract process for repair?
Why isn't OGS putting out a statement?

SLIM A 4 YR OLD COMMERCIAL AC INSTALLED PROPERLY SHOULD NOT BE MALFUNCTIONING.

WONDER WHAT OTHER GREMLINS ARE LURKING ABOUT AT SWIM FACILITY THAT WE DONT KNOW OF BECAUSE FENTY AND HIS COHORTS FAILED IN THEIR OVERSIGHT OF A $35 MIL PROJECT.

  • drez

noodlez you sound like a guy who bought a nice car and doesn't understand why it's not running as well as it used to- even though you've not changed the oil in 4 years.

  • drez

Shorter noodlez It's Fenty's fault for building something nice.
He should have known we couldn't take care of it.
